Hey, guys. I’m just typing here hoping to promote my etsy shop. It started out as a failed doll accessory shop that I eventually neglected. I had simply lost passion for it. For the record, I’m well aware that there are many issues surrounding racism that still need fixing, and cultural appropriation is one of them. However, I feel like too many people misuse the term “cultural appropriation” and put stigma on cultural appreciation. Not to mention that many of those same people use it as an excuse to make certain things “minority-only”, in other words, cultural exclusivity. Guys, there IS a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation!

I’m a hispanic/white mix and I personally wouldn’t mind if some white person, or any other non-Hispanic, genuinely wanted to learn about playing in a Mariachi Band or doing a salsa dance in traditional garb. What I WOULD mind is a person dressed in a stereotypical poncho/sombrero/cartoon mustache combo playing maracas and speaking gibberish in an exaggerated Latin American accent.

I know I don’t speak for everyone in my race, but that doesn’t mean that my argument is invalid. It means that there’s disagreement on what cultural appropriation actually is. Just think about that before you call out “Cultural appropriation!!!!!”

One of the things I like about this: they’re doing it without shouting down women.

Because “that doesn’t happen to guys” *IS* a feminist issue. Male victims of abuse being dismissed, blamed or ridiculed because they weren’t “manly” enough is a part of patriarchy. And you can raise awareness of that without dismissing other feminist issues or bringing it up as a “counter argument” to problems women face.

MRAs, take note. This is how you actually support men’s rights.
