AIO? Should I leave this person?
I’m wondering if I’m overreacting and would really appreciate some outside perspective. I went to a restaurant with my partner for a late lunch. I ordered one of my favourite dishes, which is something he doesn’t like. He then suggested that we get two other dishes, which I agreed to. He asked whether I wanted rice or noodles, and I said I preferred plain white rice. He suddenly got really pissed off and threw a tantrum because he wanted the flavoured rice or noodles instead. It sounds like something small, but it’s not really about the rice to me. I’m more upset about how he reacted over such a minor disagreement, especially when I was already compromising on the other dishes. Would you leave someone over behaviour like this, or am I making too much of it? Is this a red flag, or just a stupid argument that couples have?
Reddit consensus: NOT OVERREACTING (NOR) (100% confidence)
Top comment: “NOR. An adult throwing tantrums is never ok. Over rice vs noodles? You’re in a relationship with a toddler.
🚩🚩🚩 One red flag for each year of his emotional age.”
Notable comment: “NOR. When someone acts this way, I question their emotional maturity. It's manipulative, and I don't need that in my life. I have no idea why he would do this except to upset you and potentially ruin the meal for you. Why would he want to do that? Because it makes him feel powerful. It's childish and controlling. It's a red flag. I suspect he has done stuff like this in the past.”
