Purgatory seems to frequently become a location for reflection, doesn’t it? Sometimes it’s for wallowing in ones failures. You have to wonder what Sam’s thinking, anxious being alone in Purgatory—the place Dean was trapped in for a year while Sam didn’t look for him… the guilt he feels over that that he represses… and he’s about to step into hell, which is another place Dean went where Sam tried to get him out (or stop him from going altogether) and couldn’t. And then when Dean came back, there was another failure—an emotional one they don’t talk about: Sam’s narrative around Dean’s hell trauma quickly becoming that hell broke Dean and made Dean weak (using that as justification to lie to and sideline him). Now Sam’s been to hell too, and didn’t do so hot with the trauma. Dean buried his hell trauma on his own but Sam couldn’t. He needed a supernatural fix. And I do think these are other ways Sam feels he’s not only let Dean down, but can’t measure up, and that’s why he’s so stuck on proving he doesn’t need Dean to have his back, and taking offense to Dean wanting to have his back.
