Hello there. I am writing a Snape story and I want to use British slang. Can you give some examples of words and their use?
Good luck with your story! :)
The difficult thing about British slang is that it differs depending on region, and you have words that are carried locally if they’re not succeeded by a national phrase - so a word might be Mancunian in origin, but may spread to other areas as people move around.
So part of the issue depends on where you place Snape, and who he is talking to, and when it is/was. For instance, 20 years ago I might have said something good was mint or sound or wicked, but I wouldn’t really do so now. If you’re writing phonetically, you might want to consider how words are pronounced with an accent. Some are easier to transcribe than others, such as the dropping of a ‘h’ or ‘g’ sound, or t-glottaling, or omitting ‘to’ - or depending on the setting, you might change how the word is said in informal terms…say, for example, right is also reet.
These are all words/phrases that stem from around where I am:
coss - tell offmither - botherkaylied / rat arsed - drunkmooch - wander aimlesslyskive - avoid without permissioncadge - begshufty - glancedock off - massivelozzock - lay aboutsorted - fixednarked - irritatedscrikin - cryingowt - anythingnowt - nothingscruff - unkempt personmucker - mateneck - quickly down a drinkcaned - quickly consumemuggins here - foolish medo one - go awaycob on - sulkfilch - pinch (as in steal - but only something minor, e.g. filch a pen)mard (mardy / mard-arse) - sulkingbrassic - skintslat, chuck - throwmaul - heave with difficultyscran / grub - foodbrew - cuppacanny - smartgood hiding - belting / beatingkecks - trousersin all / and all - as wellgawp - stare rudely without shamecop off / get off - pull (a person) hanna - have notdancers / wooden hill - stairsmush / chops - mouthgrots - sweetsclobber - clothesdoddle - easyus - me (as in ‘give it us’)snicket - alleyclocked - noticedkip - napbobos - sleep (used with kids especially)tra - byeheckers like - definitely not, used scornfully
If I’m honest, I’d definitely try and hit up someone who is from / lives in the region where you’re trying to place the characters, and just get them to check it over to see if it scans.
Hahaha it's 'heck as like' not 'heckers like', as in 'do you like Donald Trump?' 'Do I heck as like' i.e. no I fucking don't.
Good post 🙂
Maybe stop making jokes about how Blake Shelton being the sexiest man alive is hilarious because he’s not muscular/conventional/etc. Especially if you also find the idea of women only being attractive if they fit very exacting standards. I mean for fuck’s sake people, you don’t have to find him attractive but finding the idea that a dude with a dad bod could be considered sexier than Jason Momoa or whoever else insanely hilarious is just being deliberately mean at that point, no? At least the people who’d find Melissa McCarthy or Adele being voted sexiest woman alive hilarious too are being consistent.
What does his age have to with it? I agree with op that ppl need to stop being so aggressive about it.
thinkingingallifreyan replied to your post “Are there any howling Americanisms in fanfic that are a particular pet…”
Since when has “faggot” meant “meatball”, the only meaning for it I knew was “thing you use to fuel the fire” which is where “fag” for “cigarette” comes from. Also I have a friend from Birmingham who insists that they use “mom” around there.
If you’re not sure on something like this, a quick Google can always help you out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faggot_(food)
It’s even referenced on the Wikipedia page about the pejorative use itself:
Originally confined to the United States,[8] the use of the words fag and faggot as epithets for gay men has spread elsewhere in the English-speaking world, but the extent to which they are used in this sense has varied outside the context of imported US popular culture. In the UK and some other countries, the words queer, homo, and poof are much more common as pejorative terms for gay men. The word faggot in the UK typically refers to a kind of meatball, while fag is most commonly used as a slang term for “cigarette”.
I mean, I don’t mind you asking - but it’s not an obscure term; you can find it out quite easily online. :)
Also, are you sure your friend isn't from Birmingham Alabama because I assure you nobody British uses it, around Birmingham or not.
Give a shout out to a fellow Snape fan!
Tag a fan - it can be a mutual, meta writer, shitposter, an artist, a fic writer, even just a friend, whoever and how many you want!

I have changed my dashboard preferences to not show so called 'best' stuff first but my dash is definitely still not right. I am not seeing much activity by users I know are very active and I also keep seeing my own posts from ages ago. It's doing my head in. Any ideas?
I hate change in general but this one is really pissing me off @staff
My favorite thing is that Europe is spooky because it’s old and America is spooky because it’s big
“The difference between America and England is that Americans think 100 years is a long time, while the English think 100 miles is a long way.” –Earle Hitchner
A fave of mine was always the american tales where people freaked out because ‘someone died in this house’ and all the europeans would go ‘…Yes? That would be pretty much every house over 40 years old.’
‘…My school is older than your entire town.’
‘Sorry, you think *how far* is okay to travel for a shopping trip?’
*American looks up at the beams in a country pub* ‘Uh, this place has woodworm, isn’t that a bit unsafe?’ ‘Eh, the woodworm’s 400 years old, it’s holding those beams together.’
A few years ago when I was in college I did a summer program at Cambridge aimed specifically at Americans and Canadians, and my year it was all Americans and one Australian. We ended the program with a week in Wessex, and on the last day as we all piled onto the bus in Salisbury (or Bath? I can’t remember), the professors went to the front to warn us that we wouldn’t be making any stops unless absolutely necessary. We’re headed to Heathrow to drop off anyone flying off the same day, then back to Cambridge.
“All right, it’s going to be a long bus ride, so make sure you’re prepared for that.”
We all brace ourselves. A long bus ride? How long? We’re Americans; a long bus ride for us is a minimum of six hours with the double digits perfectly plausible. We can handle a twelve hour bus ride as long as we get a bathroom break.
The answer. “Two hours.”
Oh.
English people trying to travel around Australia and wildly underestimating distance are my favourite thing
a tour guide in France told my school group that a particular cathedral wouldn’t interest us much because “it’s not very old; only from the early 1600s”
to which we had to respond that it was still older than the oldest surviving European-style buildings in our country
China is both old and big. I had some Chinese colleagues over; we were discussing whether they wanted to see the Vasa ship (hugely expensive war ship which sank on it’s maiden voyage after 12 min). They asked if it was old, I said “not THAT old” (bearing in mind they were Chinese) “it’s from the 1500s.” To my surprise they still looked impressed, nodding enthusiatically. Then I realised I’d forgotten something: “…I mean it’s from the 1500s AFTER the birth of Christ” and they went “oh, AFTER…”.
My dad’s favorite quote from various tours in Italy was “Pay no attention to the tower – it was a [scornful tone] tenth century addition.”
My mother and I once drove 16+ hours straight each way for a week-long vacation at my Aunt’s house. It was around 1100 miles. We only stopped for food and the bathroom. (We drove because we had a cat in the car and also it was cheaper than flying.)
That wasn’t even the long ways across the U.S.
The Britain stuff is so true. I read ages ago about someone taking a tour of The Globe theatre and there were some American tourists who asked 'is this building pre-war' 😂 and the guide said 'madam, this building is pre-America 😂😂
I seem to have grown up immune to the distance thing, which is lucky as I lived in Russia for a while. In my last job I had a commute of an hour and ten minutes each way and people treated me like I was insane. When I told people they'd be like 'how do you cope??!'. I think it might stem from petrol prices tbh though - it's a lot more expensive here than in the States.
BUT my absolute favourite thing about this post is that someone mentioned they went on a trip to Wessex, which was an Anglo Saxon region and hasn't existed since like the 10th century! Bless you! It sounds like you time travelled!
Star Trek fans, please reblog with the series/movie that got you into Star Trek and the approximate year that you did so.
technically the first episode of star trek i ever watched was from ENT because it was on TV when i was a kid and my dad watched them as they came out so i’d often watch with him
funnily enough, star GATE got me into star trek. my dad and i finished watching all the episodes and i was sad so i wanted another series to watch and found star trek TOS, then TNG, and sporadic episodes of VOY and DS9, then the first AOS movie came out when i was 11 and so i went back and watched all the series :P
TNG around 1992
ooooooh
has anyone watched this yet? is it good?
It's fantastic. Watch it.

Another unpopular opinion: I find it weird and unsettlingly informal when fans refer to writers/actors by their first names. You don't know them. At least use their surname too. Like, I would never call J.K Rowling 'Jo', or Emma Watson 'Emma', for example. It implies an intimacy that has an unhealthy air. With characters it's difference because they aren't real people, subject to the pragmatics and register of social interaction. It makes it seem like you have a unique, personal connection with them that places you in a position of authority over other fans.
I don't care if it's an unpopular opinion, Tara and Morgan were right - they should have killed those saviours. Jesus really went down in my estimation by dropping responsibility for their lives on Maggie. We know the guy who killed Morgan's young friend is a dick, not just a victim on the other side of the coin. The group and the saviours are not the same. They are both killers but the group doesn't try to control other people so that they can have a cushy existence.
Unpopular opinion time: what is an unpopular opinion you have about a character/ship/book/arc/whatever in the series?
I don’t like Hagrid. Like, at all. He’s irritating.
i don’t care for ron. he was a good friend to harry but god awful to hermione.
No I don't like Hagrid either.
(I know you guys get waaaay too many snape confessions but I wanted to submit my two cents on him for once. Please anon if it’s not too much trouble, thank you!)
After all, it’s only an accident of birth that I’m not someone important.

my attempts at getting the tone quite right have failed, but the idea of a Harry Potter & Keeping Up Appearances crossover brings me so much amusement. (KYA, 90s British show about a social climbing Hyacinth “it’s pronounced bouquet” Bucket as she makes a lot of hilarious faux pas and drives everyone around her insane.) because Lily and Petunia would fit in so perfectly with the flower naming scheme, as siblings or cousins or Daddy’s illegitimate much younger kids. Petunia & Hyacinth would get along like a house on fire. & when Petunia can’t deal with her nephew, well, she has a bunch of family she can drop him off with permanently. Hyacinth, despairing of the fact that her dear Sheridan is growing up/has left for college, is all too happy to take in Lily’s child. Harry’s accidental magic mainly involves helping his new mum drive everyone crazy & while he doesn’t quite have her social climbing drive, he still loves her dearly. enough that once he gets into Hogwarts, he’s very put off by the fact that wizards seem to mispronounce his last name even more than muggles do
& “Professor, is there a way for me to send letters to my parents the muggle way?”
“Are owls not good enough for you?” Poor Snape is Harry’s head of house, since Hyacinth has instilled a very noble sense of ambition in Harry. (“But which house is more prestigious?” “Off to SLYTHERIN you go!”)
“No, it’s just that if I send an owl, it’ll hide in order to prevent muggles from seeing it.”
“…correct.”
“So how will the neighbors know I’m sending letters to my parents? My mum would be so disappointed at the thought of the postman thinking I don’t write to her.”
it’s just so charming.
Yes! This fits all my blurb about class really well!
