Okay, so after doing some research: this is the tradition called Judas KƔi.
In Paraguay, people burn dolls representing someone unpopular to ābring them bad luckā or as a form of symbolic revenge. Usually the doll represents a corrupt politician. But because it was the World Cup and Judas KĆ”i happened right before the FranceāParaguay match, some people chose MbappĆ© as the figure to ācurseā so he wouldnāt play well.
All of this happened before Celeste Amarillaās tweets. Itās important to remember that she is part of the far right, an elitist, and that most Paraguayans actually supported MbappĆ© and publicly condemned her racist comments. Many Paraguayans called her out and refused to let her speak "for the country".
As for Judas KĆ”i: while hanging and burning a doll representing a Black man is obviously racist and deeply problematic, for Paraguayans the tradition usually targets anyone, regardless of race. So for many of them, the racist dimension might not be immediately visible. Their logic is: āWe do this to everyone, itās part of our culture, so if you see racism in it, youāre the one misinterpreting and being racist.ā
Thatās why the right approach is to explain the racist element of this specific act, instead of saying āthese people are horrible, I hate them all.ā The tradition itself isnāt inherently racist, but the choice of who is represented can absolutely carry racist implications, and thatās the part that needs to be unpacked.
