Most think Renatus is the cool, calm and collected sibling while Ianthe is the brash one, always voicing complaints and telling people off. Polar opposites. Yin and Yang. But, really, Ianthe is just the voice for Renatus's thoughts. They aren't on opposite sides — they're one in the same. Renatus is just the one who has to be professional, the Captain of Blood Special Forces.

Ianthe feels a great sense of accomplishment being the only one who truly knows her brother. Everything she does, thinks, feels, acts, anything, is for the sake of her brother. Co-dependent? Absolutely. But given their circumstances, can anyone really blame them?

In some ways, she's nothing short of a guard dog. She's sure in her actions because she knows her brother will back her up. She's sure in her emotions because her brother feels the exact same. Two halves of a whole, and they wouldn't have it any other way.

But to her displeasure, knowing her sibling so well goes the other way.

Ianthe puts on a brave face. She wants to do anything to make sure her brother lives, to make sure he's happy. She focuses on Renatus so much in hopes of burying her feelings of hopelessness about the world around her. Sometimes she wishes all the pain and fear would stop, even if was at the cost of her life. If she could sacrifice herself for her brother's happiness, then maybe all of this would be worth it.

After all, if only one should live, she would choose Renatus long before he had a say.

When their father told them how their mother died, she was the one to comfort him. To hold him and tell him a million times over that his existence is not the reason for their mother's lack of.

When the Aragami herd ran through the settlement, she was the one to hold him in one arm with a broken pipe in the other. It wouldn't provide any protection against Aragami, but it would give them a fighting chance against anyone trying to pillage their home.

When Renatus would wake in the middle of the night, plagued by nightmares of their father disappearing and the state of the world, she was the one to tell him stories to ease his mind. And all the times he told her he'd finally gotten a good night's rest, she could see the bags under his eyes grow darker. He never was very good at lying to her.

When they form Madly Malady, performing for the crowds of people who travel the world just to see them, she feels unbelievably light. Her brother's smile lighting up the space under the mask, their seamless movements flowing into each other. At times like this, it feels less like performing to survive, and more like performing to live.

Renatus gets sick again. It's not unusual, given his immune system. He's apologized a million times in short bouts of lucidity for being such an awful patient, complaining and whining when she's just trying to help. She never holds it against him, simply ushering him to sit up and take a few sips of water, petting his hair and laughing at red lines on his face from the pillows. Once he settles back into sleep, she begins her usual routine of rationing food and supplies for the two of them. The Red Rain has been more rampant lately, meaning no concerts for people to cheer and donate to. No Fenrir or God Eaters cross this area very often, so no one to steal from. It settles in her head as the night disappears from the sky. There's enough supplies, but only for one person.

She decides that night that if this means only one can live happily, then it has to be him. He's the one who wants to be a God Eater, to help people. What does she want? …She doesn't know. The thought of dying for anyone other than Renatus isn't something she's keen on.

Maybe it would be easier this way. Sneak out when he's still asleep, and then her eternal sleep. It's poetic, in a way. If she's to die, she wants it to be by her hands.

It feels like this has happened before. Her wishing Renatus a good life, that she loves him more than anything, then leaving before he wakes. But something shifts in the space, and as she stands to leave, a warm and clammy hand shoots out to grab her wrist. Renatus wakes up, eyes wide and panicked and teary.

"Don't go," he says. "I-I don't know why, but I had this awful feeling. Ianthe, don't leave. Please."

This time, she's the one who breaks down. She tells him what she was thinking, what she thought about doing, and how sorry she is.

She decides that this isn't a way to live. She makes Renatus a deal: she will go get help, if he leaves and becomes a God Eater. Staying tied to her side won't help either of them, and he still wants to help people. He hesitates for a moment, then agrees.

As they part ways, Renatus heading for Friar and Ianthe for whatever comes next, he smiles.
