In a TV season that saw some of our favorite shows come to an end, including Parenthood, Parks and Recreation, Mad Men, and Sons of Anarchy, it’s the deserving Justified that earned the title of Most Satisfying Series Finale in our inaugural reader-voted Yahooies.

Walton Goggins has already described the significance of the final exchange between his Boyd Crowder and Timothy Olyphant’s Raylan Givens while accepting the award for Most Memorable Line on behalf of the show. Read his words here, and remember that the line, “We dug coal together,” is pulled from both the pilot and the Elmore Leonard short story upon which it was based. You should also know that Leonard’s story, “Fire in the Hole,” ended with Boyd dead, as the pilot was originally supposed to, but that the author so enjoyed Goggins’ performance on the FX drama that he later resurrected the character in his 2012 novel Raylan. 

Below, showrunner Graham Yost, who did weekly postmortems with Yahoo TV throughout the FX drama’s final season, takes us inside the writers room one last time to explain how they decided the fates of Raylan, Boyd, and Ava (Joelle Carter) as they built toward that winning finale.

Right from the end of Season 5, we knew our final season would return us to where we began, focused down on Raylan, Boyd and Ava. The big question then was which of them, if any, would get out of Harlan alive. There were various times in the writers room when they each had a day marked for death. In the end we came back to the question that had guided us from the beginning: what would Elmore do? Would he kill Raylan? Nah. His heroes always end up among the living. Ava? Nope — his women are usually still breathing at the end, sometimes in the wind with the money, too. So, then Boyd. Would Elmore have had him bite it? Well, as his researcher and dear friend for 30 years Gregg Sutter put it, “Elmore already tried that and it didn’t stick.” Besides, if Raylan killed Boyd, what would that say about our hero of six years? So that was the call — they would all live. We like to think Elmore would’ve gotten a kick out of that. And we are all so very grateful that you fans got a kick out of it, too.

NBC’s Hannibal was nominated in two categories in our inaugural Yahooies, reader-voted awards honoring the best of the 2014-’15 season, and won both of them handily. With 53 percent of the vote, the finale cliff dive earned the title Most GIF-able Moment, and with 72 percent, its delectable table offerings took home Best #FoodPorn.

When we first talked about doing Hannibal for television, Bryan Fuller expressed that there was a lot more of a story in the Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter relationship that Thomas Harris had created than the movies had been able to explore. That began in season one as a fantastic driver of suspense, but gradually came to life as a deep friendship, one that has been able to sustain in a human, powerful way despite larger-than-life betrayals and shocking violence. Inestimable credit goes to the talent of the writers, the astonishing performances of Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen, and all the cast and crew who went beyond to create a show unlike any other on television. We’ve been blessed with the most passionate fans, and I am eternally grateful. Despite their enthusiasm and amazing reviews, we’ve sensed our days on network television might be numbered. When I first saw the footage of Will and Hannibal going over the cliff, my heart was in my throat to see the finality of their story ending. Of course, there were three place settings at the final table… so perhaps this most GIF-able moment could be the beginning of another chapter.

Yahoo TV’s inaugural award to Hannibal for “Best #FoodPorn” is made more precious because it comes via our beloved audience, the Fannibals. It is a testament to Bryan Fuller — show runner and irresistible force — whose genius steered every detail of this remarkable show. He gathered around him a company of extraordinarily gifted individuals who embraced every challenge along the way and, in the synergy of collaborating, became a family like no other. Inspired by Bryan’s astonishing vision, the feasts I laid for Hannibal were sparked by chef Jose Andres’ magical thinking and made to look like gossamer gold by Jim Hawkinson’s lighting, Chris Byrne’s close-ups, and, of course, by our stars, whose on-screen reactions in the dinner scenes suggested that every morsel was food of the gods. 

We’ve announced the winners of our inaugural reader-voted awards, the Yahooies, honoring the best of the 2014-’15 TV season, and to celebrate their victory in the Best Sex Scene category (and thank the fans), the Outlander writers have sent us the script for what we affectionately dubbed “The Good Morning.”

Fans will remember that Jamie (Sam Heughan), having learned the pleasure of a certain act on his wedding night, woke up Claire (Caitriona Balfe) at the start of “By the Pricking of My Thumbs" by returning the favor. It’s the episode after Jamie and Claire’s passionate but near violent makeup sex following her rescue from Black Jack (Tobias Menzies), and the return to a more sensual intimacy was welcome — as were Jamie’s growls of “No” when a knock at the door threatened to interrupt him.

When you need to build a Disneyland knock-off out of trash and spare parts, who ya gonna call? Worker bees! That’s the kind of genius executive decision one can expect from BoJack’s couch-crashing pal, Todd (and from this series, which is full of hidden visual gems). Due to the fact that they’re working with wood, these specific stinger-equipped employ-bees may be of the “carpenter bee” variety. — Ethan Alter

Inside Amy Schumer: The ever-growing wine glass

Throughout “Football Town Nights,” which is nominated for the Best Sketch Yahooie!, Amy Schumer’s version of Friday Night Lights’s Tami Taylor is seen drinking wine. The joke: The glass she’s holding keeps getting larger and larger until finally, it’s more than half her height. As the show’s head property master John Udell told Yahoo TV of her final round, “It was meant to be used as a display centerpiece for wine bottles and beers on ice, not to be actually drunk out of. We could only fill it with about 4 gallons of watered-down white grape juice before it became unmanageable. It probably weighed 40 pounds in the end — almost too heavy for Amy to lift on her own, but we did manage to get a few takes of her chugging it. Can’t wait for the wine glass twice her size for Season 4!” — Mandi Bierly

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver: The ongoing map trick

One minute you’re feeling all superior for spending Sunday night hating on sexist beauty pageants, tsk-tsking drone usage, and learning about current events in Uganda on HBO’s Last Week Tonight, and then the next, bam!, John Oliver knocks you down a peg with his recurring incorrect map graphic gag. Capitalizing on the generally weak geography skills of Americans, The Daily Show alum will start a segment on a country, say Uruguay, and a corresponding map of South America will pop up to his left with said nation highlighted. Except it’s often the wrong part of the world that is highlighted and Oliver cracks giddily, “a country you think about so little that you didn’t even notice that’s not Uruguay.” And lest you think the joke would only work with faraway lands like Bolivia, Oliver once subbed South Dakota for Nebraska adding, “C’mon, it’s your country. That’s not OK.” To keep the hoodwinking fresh, the LWT team isn’t afraid to switch it up by passing off the Caspian Sea as Azerbaijan or correctly coloring within the right borders, then admonishing viewers with two not-Venezuela corrections before admitting it was right the first time. It is a rare talent that can make you fall for the same stunt over and over again and get you to laugh while simultaneously making you feel stupid and question your schooling. — Carrie Bell

Silicon Valley: The adult entertainment conference nameplates

We loved the Let Blaine Die SWOT board, but the paper nameplates IDing the execs attending an adult entertainment conference that Richard had crashed in hopes of stealing one film company’s business from a rival were the subtle, surprise gift that kept on giving. And yes, these were the least NSFW examples. — MB

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: The fancy ice

When Kimmy asked her rich boyfriend, Logan Beekman, to pick up some ice on the way to her birthday soirée, she was probably thinking a plastic bag of drink-coolin’ cubes from the local bodega. But that was like a foreign concept to Snooty McSnooterson, who instead went to an “icery” and arrived at Kimmy’s with this: Breukelen Artisanal Frozen Water (say the name real fast… it’s another fine entry in the history of Tina Fey’s marvelous mockery of all things hipster). And what, exactly, is artisanal frozen water? A fancy wooden chest — velvet-lined, natch — filled with four perfectly-shaped cubes, a set of tongs, and a booklet detailing the artisanal ice-making process. — Kimberly Potts

She wasn’t the only one who struggled (Nevada was asked how she’d improve race relations in America and to “be specific”), but Rhode Island clearly didn’t understand the term “political correctness” when she was asked whether it was helping or hurting our country. After asking for the question to be repeated, she only had time to say, “I think that it’s a balance of both. We need the people to remind us, especially politicians to remind us, what to do right, when to do wrong.” — Mandi Bierly

Juliette hits rock bottom, with a snow globe, Nashville

Juliette’s pregnancy had plenty of moments that were meant to make us chuckle (see: the scooter), but her postpartum depression is a serious matter. As a viewer, it’s difficult — and frustrating — to watch a character in that deep of denial. So why did we laugh when she and Avery got into a blowup while he was holding the baby she’s been so busy avoiding? Because her diva tantrum and disconnect was so over-the-top — “Give it to me… Give me the damn baby!” — and ended with her throwing a snow globe at Avery’s head. A snow globe. — MB

Aria and Spencer might freeze to death, Pretty Little Liars

Are characters ever not getting locked in odd places? Photography dark rooms, basements, stores… the list goes on and on. But when Aria and Spencer wound up trapped in a freezer in an abandoned ice cream factory (don’t even get us started — there are so many abandoned factories and warehouses in Rosewood!) while looking for Mona’s laptop, it pretty much took the proverbial cake. Or ice cream cake, in this case. As usual, "A” magically knew where the girls were and magically had a key to turn on the power to start pumping life-threatening levels of liquid nitrogen into the tiny room. After Emily fails to save them in her first try, she watches as their faces in the window get absurdly iced over. We should be terrified, but when have those Liars ever not gotten out of such a bind? — Breanne L. Heldman

“It’s like blue balls… in your heart," True Detective

How did Vince Vaughn manage to deliver this all-time howler with a straight face? (It sounds like a lame joke from one of his frat-boy movie comedies.) And how did Colin Farrell manage to receive it without giggling and ruining the take? This is the true mystery of True Detective… even more so than what the hell happened this season. — Dave Nemetz

Home invasion by a stealth bear, Zoo

Actually, he wasn’t that stealth at all. We could hear him breathing. Why couldn’t the French woman he followed through her home and into her kitchen? And you know those hardwood floors would creak. — MB

Jimmy Fallon, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

The secret to Fallon’s success is, of course, his ability to get celebrities to do insanely fun things that they’d never feel comfortable enough to do anywhere else. It’s easy for him because he can’t contain his enthusiasm — he has to do it with them — and the stars now know that their efforts will be rewarded. See: his “Wheel of Musical Impressions” with Christina Aguilera (nearly 40 million views on YouTube), his “Lip Sync Battle” with Tom Cruise (more than 12 million views), and his “Box of Lies” with Nicole Kidman and “True Confessions” with Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn (both with roughly 4 million views). Also, he covered Salma Hayek in golden retriever puppies, making “Pup Quiz” the TV game we’ve most wanted to play since PLINKO. — Mandi Bierly

Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Kimmel Live!

In an era dominated by nice-guy talk show hosts, thank God we have Jimmy Kimmel to cut through all the B.S. and pick up the torch of caustic cynicism left by the departing Dave Letterman. Kimmel’s recurring “Mean Tweets” and “Lie Witness News” bits remind us that not everyone in the world is so nice… or so bright. And he still manages to crank out just as many viral-video sensations as his competitors. — Dave Nemetz

David Letterman, Late Show With David Letterman

Letterman’s final season hosting the Late Show found him operating at peak power. He knew he was heading for the final lap, and like the race-car fan he is, he calculated his speed (with his jokes) and control (with his interviewing) to out-pace competitors many years his junior. — Ken Tucker

John Oliver, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver

The Last Week Tonight host didn’t have to find his own church to make us devout believers in his weekly HBO news round-up. But it definitely doesn’t hurt. That stunt is just one of Oliver’s brilliant achievements since leaving The Daily Show and striking out on his own, appearing towards the top of a list that already includes his interview with Edward Snowden and encouraging scandal-plagued FIFA head Sepp Blatter to step aside. Oliver’s not just reporting the news — he’s making it as well. — Ethan Alter

Jon Stewart, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday… and even harder to say goodbye to late night hosts we’ve followed for 16 years. At least Stewart made his last Daily Show hurrah a boisterous one, gleefully ribbing guests (and off-screen pals) like Paul Rudd and Denis Leary, commenting with heart and humor on the important events of the day, and in general proving why he’s been our most trusted named in faux-news since 1999. — EA
