“If Alfred came here looking for it…” She paused, imagining a possible scenario, then dismissing it. “He probably wouldn’t do anything. You’re his state.”

“More like Alfred agreed to stop being unkind to me. Which isn’t exactly an apology, but it’s probably as close as I’m going to get.”

Your pretty smile, your sunshine, your…humidity. [yeesh, is it hot here or what?] 

“I know. And don’t patronize me, sweetie. I just know that I am a gift to humanity before and after I died, so I’m not concerned with your pesky sarcasm.”

Oh, perfect! [His shoulders round up as if to deny her offer, because that would be the polite thing to do, but his mouth has other plans:] Maybe a sandwich or something? [And now they are scrunching further up like an apologetic toddler’s] I didn’t eat in the airport, you know the cojones they have when it comes to prices. [real talk she could slap avocado onto bread and he would be satisfied]

Don’t be silly. [she smiles back, glad to have the weight of immediacy off her shoulders] He’ll get it back at least by 2100.

[Forgiveness? In my good Christian clusterfuck of states? Ridiculous] I’ll return it eventually, cross my heart. Just hold onto it for a while until I can figure out a good way to go about doin’ it.

I don’t know. I panicked, I guess. [she sticks her hands into her back pockets, trying to make her palms forget the sensation of leather] Mistakes were made. Many mistakes were made. And I guess if I thought I could make him mad at me, then he wouldn’t mock me. I know that don’t make much sense.
