This is a theory I'm completely pulling out of my behind but
You know how every other secret boss seems to have a unique SOUL mode? And how it seems like every SOUL mode thus far has an Undertale SOUL it correlates to? If we go by this pattern, we COULD assume that there will only be three unique SOULs appearingā HOWEVER!! I think that all four SOUL modes will be appearing in Deltarune!
We know that there is going to be a secret boss corresponding to every member of the Fun Gang, yesā Kris and Spamton in Chapter 2, Susie and Gerson/Old Man in Chapter 4, and the upcoming Ralsei and [????] in the upcoming Chapter 6 (that will likely release in either 2027 or 2028..)
BUT! What if there was a secret boss that corresponded with every PLAYABLE/PARTY-ABLE character? What if, since we already know from Chapter 2 that Chapters CAN, in fact, play out far differently via weird route, there is a weird route-specific boss that utilizes a special SOUL mode that corresponds with Noelle (and perhaps how her story's gone throughout the events of the weird route)
I believe this secret boss would have the blue SOUL mode, and that Chapter Six's secret boss will have the purple SOUL mode.
Although I am likely reading far too much into SOUL mode colors, I have noticed that a total of all four Undertale SOUL colors appear within the span of both secret bossesā at least, by all technicalities.
Kris fights Spamton with a YELLOW SOUL (<- Pretend Tumblr has yellow text). Susie fights Gerson with a GREEN SOUL.
SOUL colors in secret bosses can represent the relationship between two characters, and perhaps how that secret boss contributes (or may contribute) to said relationshipā Spamton in Chapter Two, for example, assists in the Weird Route. In this route, Spamton is a major playerā not only being the secret (although mandatory) boss that the player must fight by the end of the route, but also a part of the reason WHY this Weird Route can happen in the first place, giving the player/"Kris" the Thorn Ring and letting you know how many enemies are left in an area so you can progress with your path of killing in 'cold' blood. Spamton encourages the Weird Route, which ultimately affects the relationship between Kris Dreemur and Noelle Holiday.
Kris' icon in battle is BLUE.
Noelle's icon in battle is YELLOW.
Spamton's fight involves KRIS using a YELLOW SOUL.
Adding on, in Chapter Four, Susie fights against the Old Manā the Old Man, while also teaching Susie and speaking out about the role she may play in this story, is ALSO teaching Susie how to utilize and strengthen her confidence and HEALING MAGIC. Healing magic, which she learned from Ralsei. Healing magic, which may affect Ralsei's relationship with everyone, considering the role he considers himself to playā as the third hero of the prophecy, the 'side character' and 'healer,' the latter possibly being taken over by Susie through how she's been improving so much in the ability that was once solely, uniquely, his.
Susie's icon in battle, while it IS more pink than anything, could also be counted as PURPLEā especially when considering her appearance as a whole.
Ralsei's icon in battle is mainly comprised of GREEN.
The Old Man's fight involves SUSIE using a GREEN SOUL.
Both these facts lead me to believe that Ralsei's battle with a future secret boss will involve him using the PURPLE SOUL, while Noelle's secret boss will involve her using the BLUE SOULā or, if merely looking at Kris' sprite in general, perhaps the Cyan SOUL? Although, I will be sticking with the Blue SOUL for the sake of tradition.
This, alongside the SOUL Color -> Relationship idea, leads me to also believe the Ralsei-oriented secret boss will help Ralsei learn to be free of his own narrative in some way. Or, at least, teach Ralsei that he's free to be whoever he wants to beā that he doesn't have to sideline himself for the sake of everyone else. That he can still be just as important as anyone else, that he can be independent and do things that don't always directly benefit others, and that he doesn't just have to be the third hero. The PuppetScarf may play a role in this battle? It might not? I'm not so sure on that part, as it may just be my Spamton-addled brain whispering ideas into my eardrums, but I am (fairly) sure on the rest.
I also believe that Noelle's secret boss will either be telling her that she can never break free from the narrative we've set her throughā considering how long the Weird Route will have likely gone by that pointā or it may tell her that it's not too late to speak for herself rather than have us speak for her and control her every action. I suppose both my ideas for these secret bosses are, indeed, in relation to independence... but, I digress.
These ideas also lead me to believe the SOUL types represent how a character is viewed by at least the playerā or, even, by themselvesā especially so in the Weird Route. The YELLOW SOUL in the Weird Route may represent how the player (or, Noelle herself) would see Noelle as a tool to 'get stronger'/Proceed with the Weird Route, as with the bullets shot. The GREEN SOUL, in kind, may be in relation with how Ralsei views himself as the 'protector' or merely 'support character' of his friends, as with the shield. If the BLUE SOUL is used for Noelle's fight, it could represent how Krisā as it's clearly shown that they do NOT like the Weird Route whatsoeverā would see themself (or the player, or both combined) as something that could be 'weighing Noelle down' along the Weird Route, as with the gravity.
However, I am not so sure exactly what the PURPLE SOUL type would have to do with how Susie sees herself in Chapter Six, even if it is a times awayā perhaps it could represent how she feels when jumping between dark world and reality? Or it could represent charging at something? I cannot say, sadly.
And to finish off!! I've also realized that each (party-able) character, in fact, has a corresponding SOUL type.
Ralsei -> Kindness (for his selflessness, mainly, although he DOES need to do kindness to himself from time to time!!!)
Susie -> Perseverance (for pushing on and on in life, especially shown in the Dark Worlds, setting herself on overcoming the obstacles in her wayā if, by coming up with her own ideas to overcome them)
I cannot say for sure (or give exact reasons for) the next twoā maybe because I have not analyzed either of them as much as I ought toā although...
Noelle -> Justice
^^ I also forgot about... just ice... in the making of this post (thank you transgarlicbreadlover)
Kris -> Integrity(?), Patience(?)
I'm sure ones with a far better understanding than I on Kris and Noelle can support the SOUL typings!! (Hopefully...)
And I am aware that there may be more playable characters in the future chapters, ALTHOUGH, there have not been any new ones within the two most recent chaptersā so, I figured that I have reason enough to believe at least these four (Kris, Susie, Ralsei, and Noelle) will the characters of utmost importance when it comes to not only the story but also SOUL types and Secret Bosses.

my (probably not) unique experience with Spamton, 2021 up to until about a month ago.
Image text (and a bit more elaboration) under the cut cus this is lowkey incomprehensible
--------------------------------
first photo:
Circa 2021 (chapter 2 release):
Heās desperate and lonely. He believes everyone has abandoned him, and maybe they have. He believed a voice on the phone was helping him, but it was using him. It abandoned him, leaving him for dead.Ā
But he won't let go. Heāll forcefully take all that he deserves, all that he lost and more. and once heās at the very top, where he belongs, heāll show them all. Theyāll see. Theyāll all pay.
me: āYeah heās cool, I see why people are losing their mind about him. But he doesn't activate brainworms for me, I still like him tho.ā
second photo:
2025 (chapter 3 release):
It wasn't greed. It wasn't selfishness. Not fully. It wasn't just something that happened. It wasn't outside of his control. He tried to see too far, not just because he wanted more. He trusted. He loved. He dared to risk what he had for someone else. That was why he was abandoned by the phone.Ā
What he had was not for his partner, but he didn't care. He wanted to reach the heavens while holding his hand. He wanted him to see. It was an act of defiance rooted in love that did him in.
He lost it all because he dared to trust. He dared to love. He hated to feel. Back then, If he just didn't feel, heād still have it all. Back then, If he didn't care, heād still have the power, heād still have the phone.
He hates that he had loved enough to risk himself. He hates that he lost. He hates him, not because he abandoned him, but because If HE just didn't exist, if he didn't love him, if he didn't risk it for someone else, heād still be on top.Ā
me: "WHAT"
-----------------------------------
Explanation (become insane with me):
It's about the change from "he had no agency in his own demise" (things went well when he had the voice on the phone, then the voice just disappeared. it was outside of his control)
To "his demise was his own doing, his own choice. Moreover, it was a choice made in a rare moment of selflessness, for someone he genuinely loved" (instead of the voice just disappearing, it left him because he defied its will. He knew or didn't know it was a bad choice to defy God- but he still did it. HE did it. It was his doing.)
It's about character agency!!! Im sure I bring it up a lot when I talk about characters, but stories are so much more meaningful to me when the characters aren't helpless- even if it makes them worst as people, ESPECIALLY SO, it's so much better when their tragedies are their own fault.
And you know what? I would've loved it so much even if there was no love. Even if it was a classic style bare bones Greek mythology story, where the character acts selfishly, being humanly flawed, and gets punished for it. (please don't pelt me with rocks.)
But it was even more. Toby did it again with the thing that breaks me. It was love. Whether you ship them or not (I know it could mean nothingā¢, idc) Spamton still cared about tenna. It's not even implied, it's outright said. He cared, that was his flaw! That was his mistake!
So often when we get half the story in these games, we take the information way too literally and assume the worse of the characters- (Kris opened a dark fountain? Oh they're possessed by a second entity.) (ralsei hides secrets from us? Oh he's secretly evil.)
Oh Spamton says he hates this "tenna" guy? That's the person who abandoned him and took everything from him. He's the villain of his story.
Nope. Tenna was someone Spamton cared about so much. So much so that he made an incredibly uncharacteristic decision, to risk it all, for him. For someone other than himself.
Spamton hates Tenna because Tenna is a representation of everything he lost, and why he lost it. Feelings are so much easier to hate and blame when they've got a name.
Before chapter 3 (from what we were told) his story lacked agency. Things happened around him, to him. Never BECAUSE of him.
The voice on the phone found HIM. it helped him get big. It decided to disappear, Then everything fell apart. Nothing was his fault and because of him. It was a good narrative and it made sense for him! But it didn't make me eat drywall. Y'know.
And when chapter 3 released... We learned that tenna managed to convince Spamton to sign the deal. He managed to convince him to tell him "his secret". Spamton was about to give him divine knowledge. He DECIDED TO. he MADE THE DECISION to sign the deal. Then the phone rang.
it waited until Spamton really did pick up the pen, and put it to the contract. Until the decision was clear and final. Then, it cut him off.
It was a fully conscious decision. It was his doing. It was his fault. He risked his position of power because he let a person that he cared about tempt him into it. He wouldnt do this for just anybody. He said screw it to everything he got from the voice on the phone, for this guy who made him feel just as special. For the first time in his life he did something for someone else. And that was when he lost it all.

i am unable to get into the fandom idea of tenna hurting spamton (which is frighteningly common and usually depicted as justified for him to hit a mentally ill homeless man, then has spamton apologize for??? being homeless and unable to come back??????) because it comes across far more like tenna is angry at HIMSELF than spamton.
tenns re-telling of the events around the contract should logically be biased in his favor, but even in this version he doesnt make himself sound very good. saying he āsweet-talkedā spamton, mentioning that he noticed spamtons visible fear (āhis face turned paleā), and then went for the phone anyways (āit was finally my chance to be a big shotā) all make him come across as selfish and manipulative. its only after recounting these events that he furiously calls spamton a freak and accuses him of being a scammer, but tenna tends to redirect every negative emption he has into angry outbursts (#autism).
it feels far more like he feels such suffocating guilt and shame (regardless of how justified that guilt is) that the only way to cope is to tell himself that spamton never cared anyways, because forgetting spamton isnt possible. its why his anger is so overblown and outrageous, yet hes more panicked when he sees spamton. its not GENUINE anger, its the way hes coping with the remorse he feels.
i find it very telling that in the z-rank room, the posters with spamtons face on them are undamaged, but the mirror is smashed, as if tenna couldnt stand to look at himself.
Yes!! This is exactly what I've been saying as well!! The mirror is shattered because Tenna couldn't stand to look at his own reflection!!
Importantly, Tenna's anger issues are also intensified by trauma (it's a common consequence of trauma), and with Spamton it's also anger as a stage of grief.
From Tenna's perspective, Spamton got that phone call, clearly panicked, ran away and never came back, and hasn't been heard from since. Tenna has no idea what exactly happened, just that it was something terrible, or where Spamton is now, and considering that it's been years, he probably thinks he lost Spamton forever, possibly to death (though in actuality this is only true if Chapter 2's Weird Route was completed).
The stages of grief aren't experienced as a neat linear progression, and going through multiple at the same time isn't unusual. Tenna is definitely experiencing both denial ("Spamton didn't go missing, he chose to abandon me!") and anger (at himself, but kinda towards Spamton as well, "why did you leave me?"; it's not a rational feeling, but people may feel this way towards dead loved ones).
The grief that Tenna is experiencing gets completely missed surprisingly often, and it leads to various mischaracterizations, like him being depicted as genuinely hating Spamton (or still being angry at him after the reunion despite the fact that Spamton clearly went through something terrible), him being diagnosed with something that doesn't actually fit his characterization, etc.
It is also really weird for people to think that Spamton should apologize to Tenna. For what?? Him running away was clearly a result of panic, and him not coming back (assuming that he still could at the time of his eviction) was because he wasn't able to call Tenna and was tricked into believing that he got abandoned.
Now, there's a distinction between "he should apologize" vs "he would apologize".
For example, Tenna would apologize to Spamton, since he believes he forced Spamton into a contract that resulted in him getting hurt, but it'd be wrong to say that he "should" apologize, since Spamton signed willingly, certainly aware of the risk and willing to take it, and him getting hurt wasn't Tenna's fault and he doesn't blame Tenna for it.
Similarly, I think Spamton would apologize for ever doubting Tenna and actually believing that he got abandoned, but to say that he "should" apologize for (as a lot of people apparently believe) "abandoning" Tenna is incorrect. He Did Not Fucking Do That. He did not knowingly make the decision to run away (it was a panic response), and he did not choose not to come back while knowing that Tenna wanted him back (he thought he got abandoned).
Like, do people think he chose to be homeless?? You think if he had known it was an option and could've come back to Tenna, he wouldn't have, at least for his own selfish reason?? (It's not the actual main reason why he would've wanted to come back, but we're talking about people who often do present him as really selfish, even though he willingly made a huge sacrifice for his partner.)
You know, I say "do people think he chose to be homeless", but like... That seems to actually be what many people unironically believe about homelessness - that it's some sort of choice/lifestyle or moral failing (rather than a systemic one). Because they've never actually heard from even a single homeless (or formerly homeless) person and just think of the homeless as, like, an Other that makes them uncomfortable or whatever. And of course, mentally ill people are seen that way as well, so when you have a guy who's both, that compounds.
(Side note: I'm going to be a bit charitable and add that some people who depict Tenna or Spamton being violent towards each other seem to be doing it in like a "slapstick comedy violence" sort of way, I'd guess in part because they don't recognize that violence does have weight in Deltarune, even for a more cartoony character like Tenna (and also missing his characterization as someone who is averse to violence). But still, I'm not a fan.)
All of this is so spot on. I genuinely hate the ātoxic yaoiā interpretation of spamtenna, and it drove me mad when that was the prevailing popular depiction of them after ch3. It made me feel like I was somehow naive or dumb for believing they actually had a loving relationship and would still be together if they could (it was so bad that anytime anyone would depict them not resenting each other in art or fics, the creator would always profusely apologize for making them āout of character,ā and I just wanted to shake them and say that it was everyone else making them ooc), but then the newsletter dropped and just proved to me that I was reading the situation correctly the whole time. I mean, itās fucking Deltarune, itās not an edgy adult animated show. The whole point of this story is love and hope, and overcoming āfateā with kindness and empathy. The people who want them to be genuinely toxic are sanding down everything that makes spamtenna a narratively resonant love story ā that Spamton and Tenna deeply loved each other and wanted to be together despite āfateā pulling them apart, intent on their stories ending separately and tragically, because they both tried to choose who they are in this world. Theyāre legitimately one of the most compelling relationships in utdr.
I think many people are completely unable or unwilling to sympathize with Spamton, most likely because they donāt see him as a character who has just as much depth and nuance as any of the protagonists do; they either see him as a joke character, in large part due to his disabilities and homelessness (and as someone who actually has been unhoused in the past, I hate the way a lot of this fandom treats Spamton like heās āgrossā on purpose, or just chooses not to bathe, or like heās less worthy of being taken seriously because of this, or like any of it is his own fault), or theyāre unable to separate normal Spamton from Weird Route Spamton ā which is the worst possible version of him. Itās like if people took Undyne as a character and only focused on what she does in the Undertale ending where she becomes a military dictator intent on destroying the human race, or only saw Mettaton as the guy that makes the Underground into a dystopia and brainwashes everyone. Everyone has the potential to do good things and terrible things, depending on outside influence from the player. Thatās literally the point of these games. On the normal route, Spamton unequivocally does a good and selfless thing, and sacrifices the thing he holds most dear, his autonomy, in order to help Kris and their friends do what he never could: find their own freedom.
No, Spamton and Tenna donāt genuinely want to kill each other, and it would take a LOT to get them to that point, I think. All their anger stems from misunderstandings that can be resolved, and itās mostly just to cover up how badly they still need each other. Otherwise Spamton wouldāve actually tried to hurt Tenna at some point in ch3 like he yelled about doing for so long, instead of waiting until he thought Tenna might really care about him to come out and try to make up with him. And itās crystal clear how worried Tenna is about Spamton in the ch5 cutscene ā he does NOT want Spamton to be hurt. I donāt know how people still think they actually want to harm each other when theyāve proven they donāt. (I will say, I think a lot of the slapstick stuff comes from Toby comparing spamtenna to Spy vs Spy in a Bluesky post from last June, although to be honest, Iām genuinely not sure just how seriously he meant for us to take that.)
The thing I think Tenna actually needs to apologize for is what he said in the pipis scene. I fully understand he was falling apart and completely panicking given the insane circumstances, but still, Tenna saw Spamton for the first time in ten years, saw how he looked, and his reaction in the heat of the moment was to call Spamton an unidentifiable thing and a rat. This made Spamton not want to come out of the inventory again. Regardless of the fact it was a panicked reaction that he probably didnāt fully mean, Tenna still needs to apologize for those words.
Tenna is absolutely experiencing some pretty severe disenfranchised grief (grief others canāt fully understand or acknowledge, because no one seems to know or care much about what āthat mailmanā actually meant to Tenna) on top of constantly feeling that he could be thrown out by his own family at any moment and then be killed ā and Tennaās been living this way for ten years with a very small and ineffective support system who are just making things worse in many ways, even if theyāre trying to help. Itās implied that Tenna never even really opened up to anyone about his grief and guilt over Spamton until the ch5 cutscene. This would take a severe toll on anyoneās mental health after so long, and explains so much of Tennaās behavior; in fact, Iām surprised heās not even worse off than he is. Tennaās grief over Spamton, and the unbearable guilt of feeling that he could be responsible for his death, is objectively a huge influence and weight on Tennaās character and psyche. (This is what really confuses me about all the people who adore Tenna so much but completely refuse to acknowledge Spamtonās importance to him. You donāt have to like Spamton, but you are removing a fundamental part of your āfavorite characterā by pretending Spamton doesnāt even exist.) And itās very clear that Tenna will never be able to fully make peace with himself or his life unless heās able to talk to Spamton about all of this.
Anyway⦠society if people were willing to acknowledge nuance and very obvious subtext, huh?
Canon Spamtenna, who deeply love each other, fit really well with the theme of "nobody gets to choose who they are in this world" as a couple that tried to defy what they're "supposed" to be and got punished for it. Their story being one of forbidden love also works as a neat allegory for queer and interracial relationships. (As for the Spy vs Spy thing, my read on that is that it was clearly a comparison of the degree of similarity between the two characters in each duo, not a comparison of the dynamics. That's what Toby was talking about, that they're intentionally similar characters.)
I forgot about the pipis cutscene when I was talking about the apologies and yeah, Tenna should apologize for that, and I think he will. He's definitely gonna feel bad about what he said, especially once he realizes how much Spamton already hated his own body.
Another thing related to people acting like Spamton just chooses not to bathe/is gross on purpose: I'm not a fan of people depicting big shot era Spamton as being dirty/not caring about making a mess as well. I only recall seeing it once, but I really didn't like that. It's one of those "I have no idea where you're getting this from" things, aside from just assuming that his dirtiness now is a Personality Trait rather than a result of his circumstances, when it's clearly the latter.
(Also, I don't trust anyone who says they "love" Tenna but completely ignores Spamtenna. Even the way Tenna looks is deeply influenced by Spamton, that's why he has the nose, and he still wears his half of their matching outfits. He wouldn't look like this if Spamton wasn't important to him, so it's weird seeing his canon outward look, but with who he is as a person being completely erased. It's like drawing him with a wedding ring but insisting he's single. Very obvious evidence to the contrary is right there!)
