Would you mind sharing the details that "debunked" acid theory for us ignorant folks?
(Love the fic BTW, take as long as you need to keep cooking 🔥)
absolutely! :D it would be my pleasure *rubs my hands together giggling* now don't touch that dial because i've been saving these for a rainy day (ignoring how the sun is bright as all hell outside)
starting off easy with the japanese localization of spamton's shop dialogue, which toby fox worked on as well. It translates to something more akin to his eyes burning rather than anything else. The best translation I could find was on reddit where it's translated to:
"In the past, I was just in charge of sending emails. Now I'm in charge of [[Wait! It's too bright! My eyes hurt, stop!]]"
But I mean even in the english ver of the game there was always "MY EYES ARE [[Burning]]..." to support that even before us english-speakers even heard of the japanese localization differences.
Looks like he saw what was on the other side of the shadow crystal you nabbed from him at the end of his fight:
Also in-game it was evidenced that his puppet transformation had something to do with his [[Communion]] and not anything to do with acid. I think the theorists forgot that part.
Point 2: in the spamton sweepstakes' fangamer Q&A on twitter: spamton himself confirms he's always been on the shorter side of the addisons
knowing that the only basis behind acid theory was that darkners could shrink from the acid (which just so happened to just be a funny joke from Queen) and then confirming that Spamton was always a lil guy?? it shows that that's not what happened to him either. So let's keep going.
Point 3:
Backtracking to the swan boat ride gives this lil swatchling interaction. Cyber darkners seem to be unaffected by the acid in general, like Queen even drinks it and claims it's a free pool. There's evidence in sweepstakes that Spamton got thrown in, sure, but if it can't even burn a photo or pottery, i don't think it would burn an addison.
However, it looks like they threw him in there after too-many-an-attempt on the Neo robot, maybe to try and get him to not come back. Unfortunately for them, this puppet is determined and desperate. It looks like he got bullied pretty harshly, but nothing to warrant being permanently puppetified by any of the mansion staff.
Swatch took it upon themself to keep Spamton from the Neo robot, as they helped designed it, hoping something would come from it when nothing ever did. It's said to be incredibly powerful, so of course Swatch wants to keep him the heck away from it. All of the traps in the basement (the chests with traces of money in them (bait?), the keygen lock, etc) look to have been designed specifically to keep Spamton out.
It's not the reason behind his transformation, but we know that he went swimming at some point lol
The mansion staff (Queen, Swatch, Tasque Manager, etc.) aren't malicious, they just want to keep something sacred away from someone who wants to use it for selfish and nefarious purposes. Which it's warranted! Spamton is at the end of his rope at that point, but he has no business trespassing and stealing a too-tall abandoned art project.
Besides, seeing [Heaven] and having your fate decided by outside forces aligns more with the themes of deltarune already, and if acid theory had been proven canon back in Ch2 or heck even in Ch3, i still wouldn't care for it. I think it's a really lazy way to make Spamton's downfall more impactful, and is just unnecessary angst, compared to everything else his character has to offer. Trust me, i love a good angst sesh, but without merit or thematic background it falls flat to me. But that's just my bias! Thats not evidence at all lol.
Hopefully I helped!
