We know that Lara’s love is meant to bring the light of the Kingdom back- but how?

A little detour, but let’s look at the concept trailer for the show:

The prince’s chest glowing like the spark we see whenever Lara’s love grows.

Lara is carrying a knife, one that looks like the thing that appeared in episode 3, on the sea, after Mari said “I like people like you” and it made Lara skip a heartbeat. (below are the images from episode 3)

And the next images on the concept trailer:

The knife opens up like a fish with teeth and a tongue. Implying,, that the knife was about to bite into the heart of the prince? Of the spark in his chest? Or one might call it- the light?

So here is the theory:

What if the process of “finding love to continue the light of our kingdom” that the mermaid society is built on is more gruesome than we were first made to believe?

Because here is the thing: Lara’s mother is never in the picture since the beginning of the show.

We only see her in the trailer, holding hands with the King when they were young:

The sisters spinning hand in hand, switches to two blue mermaids spinning hand to hand, switches to a young King spinning with one of the blue mermaids, spins into the other mermaid spinning with a human, transitions into the Witch.

This shows two things:

That the Witch is Lara’s aunt, and she also fell in love with a human. That might be the reason for her cruelty at the beginning of the show. That her love was forbiddwn and she resented the kingdom for it.

Or

The light of the kingdom came from capturing of people’s hearts when they’re in love. And Lara’s mom / Witch’s sister was sacrificed to continue the light of the kingdom.

And she resents the kingdom for that.

I might be completely off in the Witch parts of the theory, but I do think that the theory that ‘Kingdom’s light is preserved by capturing the heart/light of people in love’ is gonna be accurate.

After all this is supposed to be closer to the original tale, and the original tale is known to be gruesome.

Also this would explain why humans think mermaids are “vile creatures”, and connect to the lore of Sirens that lure people with their beauty and drag them to their death.
