people at the grocery store sometimes do a visible double-take about how many vegetables I'm buying. they look at me probably thinking wow she's so healthy! it's ok that she's also buying donuts! she's earned them!
you fools. all the produce is for my pet pig. I'm eating donuts for dinner.
an older woman actually stopped me once and told me I must be a great cook because I was just throwing random vegetables in my cart based on price. she was like "gosh! I would need a recipe to know what to do with all of those!"
i do have a recipe. it's very simple:
ingredients: vegetable
step 1: throw it on the ground.
You have to imagine someone in the manufacturing and distribution process noticed this before it got to store shelves, and someone had to make the call "fuck it, we're not redoing it".
three of them
Courage, Anxiety, and Despair Watching the Battle by James Sant (ca. 1850) anyone?
I love this genre of post. One of my favorite genres.
whoever's idea it was to have womens t-shirts have those tiny sleeves that go way up into the armpits must have done that maliciously

was reminded of that youtube channel that records footage of that bridge that scalps trucks today. one of the fascinating developments that's happened since i last heard about it is that, in one of their many attempts to stop the trucks from being can-opened, they installed a traffic light that detects when a vehicle that's over the allowed height is coming and turns red so the driver can stop and hopefully notice the signage all around that's screaming "YOUR VEHICLE IS OVERHEIGHT TURN AROUND" and avoid an accident. However as a result sometimes drivers see the light turning yellow and IMMEDIATELY start flooring it to avoid having to stop, ensuring that the roof of their truck just gets fucking annihilated instantly. Really beautiful stuff you should check it out
the comments have me in tears
@rogue-bard
It DOES have a sign. It turns on when it detects something too tall for the bridge. It even flashes. And the traffic lights will go red to get people to stop when it detects an over height vehicle so they read the signs. (note this lovely example where the lights are red, because the truck thought it was better than the lights)
every time I see this post I've forgotten how clearly signposted the canopener bridge is, and every time it hits me like a truck (hitting the canopener bridge and getting the top of its trailer ripped asunder)
Important update, out of curiosity I went to look at The Can Opener on google maps and discovered that they have since opened a THEMED FOOD TRUCK PARK RIGHT NEXT TO THE BRIDGE
Sit down and crack open a cold one and if you're lucky the bridge will crack open a cold one with you.
the webcam is also visible on street view
I'm trying to grow plants indoors again, specifically lettuce since the deer around here are terrible bastards that won't let me have anything nice.
Anyway, rediscovering, as I do every time i try this, that setting up enough brightness and a full enough spectrum to replace the fucking sun is kind of difficult actually.
βso this week my town made the news forββ nope
βthereβs a restaurant two miles from my house calledββ nope
βtoday I learned [celeb] went to my high schoolββ nope nope nope nope nope
these are all real posts Iβve seen on the internet that allowed me to identify a userβs hometown instantly. if itβs a small town, thatβs doubly dangerous, because a bad actor could trace you just by a unique first name or selfie you once posted. in an age where doxxing and stalking are some of the worst Iβve ever seen it, you HAVE to think twice about what youβre posting online.
i once saw a 13-year old post an image they noted as being βa few miles from their house.β it had a theater in the shot with a unique enough name to be local. one google maps search, now everyone knew not only what city they lived in, but the possible neighborhoods in that radius too. and they had a HUGE followingβ¦who all knew this was a 13-year-old child.
so yeah. not to sound like a 90s internet safety PSAβ¦but Iβm gonna be that PSA for a minute.
if youβre posting an image, there is NO need to say that you live there. you could just be traveling. βsaw this in Montanaβ is better than βsaw this by my house!β
before you post about a venue, especially a restaurant or small store, check and see if itβs localβCRUCIALLY if it has only one or two locations. people might travel to arenas or convention centers, but theyβre far less likely to be traveling to Bartlebyβs Fish and Chips. if itβs an anecdote and you still live nearby, you can honestly just leave the name out entirely.
if youβre sharing a news story, it can just be a story you found and wanted to share. you donβt have to clarify βit happened in my town,β because even if you donβt mention your town name, an easily-googled news article will.
if youβre seeing a concert or meeting a celebrity on a tour thatβs stopped locally, wait until theyβve hit a few more venues before you post about it, or at the very least wait until you get home. this is honestly a smart move for any event you attend: unless youβre marketing yourself, thereβs no need to advertise your location in real time.
check your selfie backgrounds for anything identifying. this includes city names on venues, school names, street signs, and house numbers.
this stuff is flexible if you no longer live in your hometown, or if your city is particularly big, but thereβs STILL no reason to tie yourself to your school, your workplace, or your street. you can call it paranoid, but as someone whoβs seen my friends get literal death threats over fictional characters before, the last thing I want is someone willing to act on those threats finding out where they live.
anyway. PSA over. does a kickflip or whatever
if you want to experience life more deeply you have to find more beauty. stop training yourself to dismiss, to mock, to assume the worst all the time β when you do this you build walls between yourself and the world. and after a while you stop feeling the warmth of it entirely.
beauty requires openness. it asks you to let things reach you, to soften enough to be moved. itβs not naive to see beauty everywhereβitβs a skill, a form of intelligence, a kind of quiet bravery. because it is so much easier to critique than to create, to detach than to engage, to dismiss than to love.
let yourself be affected. let yourself find things beautiful and let that be enough. life is not asking you to be cool, sitting on the sidelines and nitpicking everything. itβs asking you to see life and experience it fully.
Iβm not saying donβt have trans head canons about whatever character you want. Do that.
I am saying Iβd enjoy your head canon SO MUCH MORE if I knew what pings your brain meats as trans ABOUT the character. Why them and not someone else?
In this specific instance, there was a much earlier post that brought up the hypothetical of "What if Peter Parker transitioned?" which was less of a "This guy strikes me as an egg" and much more of "How would someone in Peter Parker's exact situation (superhero with a skin tight bodysuit, a photographer that gets paid to take pictures of his alter ego) navigate socially and physically transitioning?"
There were a lot of points that made it an interesting thought experiment. How would she play off transitioning at the same time as her alter ego? Her boss, Jameson, is vindictive as hell about her alter ego, but most canons write him as very sympathetic and supportive in regards to minorities. How's he going to react?
And then recently someone thought Petra Parker would be a fun thing to draw and a lot of artists thought so too. And so a major game of "Yes, and" has ensued.
So I think this one's less of a serious headcanon (although it might be for some people) and more of an interesting supposition that's caught Tumblr's collective fancy.
Otherwise, it kinda depends. Some people might latch onto traits of a character that they feel represent a trans experience. Others might be trans themselves and identify with other parts of the character. Or it could make an interesting story like in this case.
Ahhh yeah. That is an interesting story!
βWhat would it be like if a superhero with a secret identity was trans?β Is a cool question.
βPetra Parker is a puppy girlβ isβ¦ written in hieroglyphics.
Which was my point. Like not βdonβt write in hieroglyphics!β Not βthatβs bad!β
Just βI think sometimes people get cliquish, and when they do that they lose sight of how other people might vibe with them if what they were saying was a bit less opaque.β
Like.., maybe Iβm being unfair here. Quite possibly. But I sometimes get the sense some people do it on purpose. Like they like the idea that only they Get It.
Which would be fine in a closed friend group with a private language, but βon socmedβ is often βin public.β
Yeah to be fair, I haven't run into any puppy girl versions of it. I can see some people being into that, but it's a little past where the initial thought experiment makes any sense.
I get more of what you were saying in the original post now.
To me, that is very similar to fan fiction that slots whatever characters, no matter what their actual personalities are, into a cutesy coffee shop college au with the the exact same dynamic as ten dozen other cutesy coffee shop college aus. But the coffee shop au has been swapped out with puppy girls, which are currently a popular motif in art about trans women by trans women. And since there is currently a popular au about a popular character being a trans woman, someone will draw her as a puppy girl.
Which is, like you were saying, "Hell yeah, follow your bliss," but also "I don't think the specifics of this character have much to do with this."
Also since the puppy girl motif is specifically popular with a subset of trans women, I think that's where the cliquish feel you mentioned comes in. Not because those trans women are a clique per se, but because you are outside that particular in-group.
I don't think anyone's trying to be purposely opaque (in this instance at least), it's just that due to how Tumblr functions compared to other socmed sites, a lot of posts escape containment from their particular in-groups, often without explanation. And a lot of times those in-groups have been been bouncing ideas back and forth while being fairly insulated for a while so they've cooked up some wild shit from the perspective of people not swimming in the same soup.
My general strategy is to just say "This isn't my thing at all, but it's nice that you all seem to be having fun" and rest in the knowledge that I might uncover an explanation one day, and if I don't, it probably doesn't matter that much anyway. If I'm REALLY curious I might click around in the tags or on the artist's blog. And a lot of times that doesn't garner any explanation and I just have to settle for a feeling of consternated bemusement.

A horrifying story from undergrad, brought to the forefront of my memory thanks to that "wellness" company trying to make light about a lack of FDA approval when looking up the ingredients of their "alcohol substitute" and discovering at least 2 of the ingredients have a regular side effect of making you shit yourself. How high of a chance? Not sure. But more than zero. On two ingredients.
Anyway, in undergrad I had a prof who spent a class session answering questions about working in tech writing. Someone asked him how he felt about having worked in pharmaceuticals, given the fears/hatred/distrust of "big pharma."
Which led to him saying he was generally fine with it, but one experience stuck with him. His pharma company was trying to create a weight loss drug, but no matter how much tinkering with the formula, they ran into the same problem over and over again: People shit their pants.
Like, over and over, people shit their pants on a scientifically interesting level.
His company finally gave up on making the pill marketable because, well, how you sell a pill that makes you shit your pants?
Anyway, it became Alli. Because my prof's company sold all the rights/research to another pharma company, and they came up with "oily discharge" to describe what is truly "you have a real chance of sharting yourself."
And that's why "Not reviewed by the FDA" should be concerning if someone is trying to sell you something. Because it could literally make you shit yourself.
hey to be scrupulously fair. so can my cancer drugs
500% valid. The perfect exception that proves the rule. Most things are NOT worth shitting your pants for. Cancer drugs? YOU SHIT YOUR PANTS.
Not to be tiresome but the FDA is only as good as the people who run it. So letβs add this to the ever-increasing list of reasons to vote in November.
Overton, a physician, is a White House aide who often briefs Trump on health issues.
An excellent point.
This story came from seeing a Seattle-based company that was trying to play off their lack of FDA review as totally boring when they are either making things you rub on your boy or use instead of alcohol. Who is running the FDA is very important. The tone people use to tell you they don't use "chemicals" just "natural ingredients" (as the company claims) and want you to think the FDA is entirely useless in all cases is also very important.
My partner was telling me about the time they tried to make "low fat" chips by frying them in an oil that humans can't digest.
Thing that happens when you can't digest oil is that it just. Goes through you. But also is a really good solvent, which is why you can get lovely things like garlic and chili infused cooking oil! And because it's a different consistency than water based liquids, your bumhole isn't as sensitive to the touch of it.
So everyone eating these low fat chips would end up seeping shit infused indigestible oil out into their undies, regardless of whether they were farting or not.
That'd be Olestra! Frito-Lay pushed that in their chips for YEARS! It was FDA approved, although they required a label warning of abdominal cramping and loose stools
It's still around, but no longer used in foods. It's used a lubricant for power tools now.
idk who needs to hear this but if you have been putting something off bc it doesn't need to be done until the end of the month. we are almost done with the teens we are approaching the big numbers (the twenties). that date shall dawn upon you swiftly and without mercy before you know it. psa for everyone except me i got plany off time
It's nice if I got hungry before I ran out energy to cook
the only reliable, effective way of "protecting children" is education. but people don't want to hear that because they don't actually care about protecting children, they care about protecting a mythologised ideal of innocence
I should draw rouge the bat. But in what circumstance
