C'est une question délicate ! Qu'est-ce qu'une bonne mère, selon vous ? Était-elle une mère aimante ? Oui ! Était-elle compétente ? C'est plus difficile à dire.

La relation entre Gāo et MK n'a pas très bien commencé (même si, heureusement pour MK, il n'en a aucun souvenir). C'est d'ailleurs l'un des facteurs qui a mené au divorce entre elle et Pigsy. Gāo ne voulait pas de MK ; non pas qu'il ait commis la moindre faute, mais elle ne se sentait pas prête à devenir mère, et elle ne voulait certainement pas d'un enfant avec Pigsy.

Gāo a une personnalité de type « A » : ambitieuse, organisée, impatiente et adepte d'une planification rigoureuse. Elle supporte mal les imprévus. Si elle n'a pas planifié une chose, elle ne veut rien avoir à faire avec. Comment pourrait-elle donner le meilleur d'elle-même ou faire les choses correctement si elle n'y a pas consacré le temps nécessaire ? Si elle n'a pas pris en compte toutes les variables et les conséquences possibles ? On ne décide pas d'avoir un enfant sur un coup de tête, qu'il s'agisse de le concevoir soi-même ou de l'accueillir chez soi.

Ce n'est pas que Pigsy soit en désaccord avec ce point de vue. Mais il était confronté à une réalité : quelles que soient les envies de Gāo, ils avaient un enfant, là, sous les yeux. Certes, il aurait mieux valu le planifier, mais ils ne pouvaient pas simplement s'en débarrasser !

C'est pourtant exactement ce qu'il a eu l'impression que Gāo tentait de faire lorsqu'elle a insisté pour confier MK à l'adoption.

Pour Gāo, il s'agissait de lui offrir une vie meilleure. De le confier à une famille qui le désirait, qui l'avait planifié. Mais pour Pigsy, cela revenait à l'abandonner. Ce qu'il refusait catégoriquement.

Ils ont donc élevé MK. Gāo a beau être stricte, elle n'est pas dénuée de cœur. Elle sait que la vie réserve parfois des surprises inévitables. (Après tout, c'est un peu le quotidien de son travail auprès de Wukong.) Cela ne lui plaît peut-être pas, mais il arrive un moment où la seule chose à faire est de s'adapter. Une fois que Pigsy a décidé que MK resterait, Gāo s'est investie dans son rôle de mère. Elle a dû beaucoup rattraper le temps perdu, tentant d'anticiper l'avenir tout en vivant au jour le jour, sans trop savoir ce qu'elle faisait.

Elle a aussi appris à ses dépens que l'éducation d'un enfant et la planification rigoureuse font rarement bon ménage.

Durant l'enfance de MK, c'est souvent elle qui jouait le rôle de la « méchante » (Pigsy, lui, n'hésitait pas à sévir si nécessaire !). Pourtant, Gāo a mis du temps à comprendre que vouloir contrôler MK ne suffirait pas à le garder sur le droit chemin. Elle s'est montrée dure avec lui, surtout lorsqu'il était plus jeune. Au fil des années, elle a en quelque sorte évolué en même temps que lui : MK vers l'âge adulte, et elle vers son rôle de mère.

S'il y a bien une chose que MK n'a jamais remise en question, c'est l'amour qu'elle lui portait. Gāo et Pigsy se disputaient souvent, notamment au sujet de MK et de ce qui était le mieux pour lui ; mais en sa présence, ils restaient courtois, quitte à devoir faire semblant. Rien ne comptait plus pour Gāo que le bien-être de MK : ni Pigsy, ni sa carrière, ni même elle-même.

En résumé : Gāo n'était pas préparée à devenir la mère de MK et a commis bien des erreurs pour cette raison. Elle a toutefois toujours cherché à agir au mieux pour lui, et elle comprend bien mieux ce qu'implique la maternité aujourd'hui qu'au moment où elle l'a adopté.

This is a tricky one to answer! What does a good mother mean to you? Was she a loving mother? Yes! Was she a competent one? That's harder to decide.

Gāo and MK's relationship did not start off well (though, luckily for MK, he has no memory of this.) That was a contributing factor to her and Pigsy's divorce. Gāo did not want MK; not for any fault of his own, but Gāo did not feel prepared to be a mother, and she certainly didn't want a child with Pigsy.

Gāo is very much a 'Type A' kind of personality: ambitious, organised, impatient, a strict planner. She doesn't do well with surprises. If she has not planned for something, she wants nothing to do with it. How is she to do her best, to do something justice, if she hasn't given it the time it deserves? If she hasn't considered every variable and outcome? A child is not something you decide to have spontaneously—whether that means creating one yourself, or bringing one into your home.

It's not that Pigsy disagrees with that. But he was also faced with the fact that, regardless of what Gāo wanted, they DID have a child, right in front of them. Planning for one would have been preferred, sure, but they couldn't just throw him away!

Which is exactly what he felt like Gāo was trying to do when she insisted on giving MK up for adoption.

For Gāo, it meant giving him a better life. Giving him to a family that wanted him, that had PLANNED for him. But for Pigsy, that meant giving up on him. Which Pigsy refused to do.

So, they raised MK. Gāo may be strict, but she's not heartless. She knows that sometimes, life throws you surprises that you can't avoid. (Hell, that's basically her life working for Wukong.) She may not like it, but there are times when all you can do is adapt. Once Pigsy decided MK was staying, Gāo committed to being his mother. She did a lot of catch-up, trying to plan for the future while living day-to-day with no idea what she was doing.

And had to learn the hard way that parenting takes to plans like water and oil.

When MK was growing up, she was often the 'bad cop'. Pigsy's not afraid to discipline MK should he need to! But Gāo struggled to understand that controlling MK was not going to keep him on the right path. She was tough on MK, especially when he was younger. As the years passed, she sort of grew along with him: MK into his adulthood, and Gāo into motherhood.

If there's one thing MK never questioned, it was if she loved him. Gāo and Pigsy fought a lot, especially over MK and what they thought was best for him, but whenever he was around, they were civil—even if they had to pretend. Nothing matters to Gāo more than MK's wellbeing: not Pigsy, not her career, not even herself.

You formulated your ideas beautifully and really made the species come to life in such a wonderful way ! I was wondering if you would ever be willing to make another one regarding a different species of dragon ?

Thank you so much for your kind words 🥹 I had so much fun researching/writing that post, so I am glad to see that other people enjoyed reading it.

I would be more than happy to make another one!

However, I only made my original post about the White Dragons because I wanted to flesh them out for my oc haha. So, a lot of my ideas/'analysis' were just headcanons and concepts that I liked and wanted to include on my oc's behalf (while still trying to be somewhat realistic.)

I only bring this up to mean: I actually don't have any ideas about the other monsters/species yet.

So, I should ask: is there a specific monster you'd like to see a post about? And do you have any headcanons about them that you'd want to see included?

For example, my insistence on the White Dragons being mammalian came from the fact that 1) I wanted it to be easier to 'blend' their biology with my oc's, given the she is also a mammal, and 2) I wanted it to be possible for my oc to have been literally birthed by a dragon. Sure, some reptiles are viviparous. But, it's much harder for me to justify a mammalian child surviving in a reptilian uterus as opposed to a mammalian one.

Or the fact that I wanted my oc to have an imprinting behaviour that could be triggered later in life, so I came up with the idea that White Dragon young were both precocial yet nidicolous: developed enough to move around on their own, but still reliant on a parent to protect them.

It was from these initial ideas I wanted to include that I then did further research into viviparity vs oviparity in birds, reptiles and mammals (with birds being defined by their oviparity, and mammals being defined by their viviparity, and therefore, even if the White Dragons might have made more sense in the category of birds, they could not be categorised as such if I wanted their biology to work with my oc.)

Basically, I'd love to write another one, but I actually don't have any idea where I'd start haha. So, please, if you do have any requests, feel free to ask. It's no pressure at all!

Bien que leur relation soit légèrement plus positive que dans la version originale de La Pérégrination vers l'Ouest (JTTW), Zhu Bajie et Gāo Cuìlán ne formaient pas pour autant un couple heureux. Zhu Bajie était épris de Cuìlán, puisqu'il avait lui-même cherché à l'épouser. Cependant, Cuìlán a découvert très tôt dans leur relation que tout ce qu'elle croyait savoir sur lui n'était que mensonge. Après tout, c'était un démon mangeur d'hommes, alors qu'elle était humaine.

Tripitaka et Sun Wukong l'ont sauvée des griffes de Zhu Bajie peu de temps après le début de leur mariage (je suppose que cela n'a pas duré plus d'un an), si bien qu'ils n'ont jamais eu d'enfants. J'y ai pourtant bien songé ! Mais, étant donné que le Pigsy d'aujourd'hui est un descendant de Bajie et que Gāo Sù est une descendante de Cuìlán, cela impliquerait des choses assez bizarres pour le mariage de Pigsy et Sù si l'un ou l'autre avait un lien de parenté avec l'enfant de Bajie et Cuìlán. Même si leur dernier ancêtre commun remontait à plusieurs siècles, c'est une situation complexe qu'il vaut mieux éviter en faisant en sorte que Bajie et Cuìlán n'aient jamais eu d'enfants.

C'est un peu triste, car c'est amusant d'imaginer un enfant mi-humain, mi-démon-cochon ! Mais cela ne s'intègre tout simplement pas à l'histoire de Gāo (que ce soit pour Cuìlán ou pour Sù).

Pour revenir un peu sur la nature de leur relation durant leur mariage, je ne pense pas que tout ait été horrible. Cuìlán ne voulait évidemment pas épouser Bajie (et, encore une fois, il dévorait des gens, haha), mais il la traitait très bien, tout bien considéré. Je pense qu'elle correspondait assez bien au cliché de l'épouse acariâtre qui « déteste son mari ». Dans La Pérégrination vers l'Ouest, Cuìlán est dépeinte comme une femme plutôt délicate et fragile, mais elle faisait aussi preuve d'une grande obstination, refusant d'embrasser ou de laisser Zhu Ganglie la toucher malgré ses demandes incessantes. Cela dit, je pense que la version que je propose a un tempérament plus fougueux. Quelle que soit la version de Gāo dans mon histoire, c'est une femme au caractère bien trempé, haha.

While their relationship is marginally more positive than the original JTTW version, Zhu Bajie and Gāo Cuìlán, they still weren't a happy couple. Zhu Bajie was infatuated with Cuìlán, given he pursued the marriage in the first place. However, Cuìlán discovered very early into the relationship that everything she thought she knew about him was a lie. He was a human-eating demon, after all, and she was a human.

Tripitaka and Sun Wukong rescued her from Zhu Bajie not long into their marriage (I imagine it can't have been longer than a year), so they never had any children. I definitely considered it! But, given that current day Pigsy is Bajie's descendent, and Gāo Sù is Cuìlán's descendent, there would be some weird implications for Pigsy and Sù's marriage if one, or the other, were related to Bajie and Cuìlán's child. Even if their last common ancestor was a few hundred years ago, it's just a messy situation that's more easily avoided if Bajie and Cuìlán never had any children.

Which is a little sad, because it's fun to think about a human/pig-demon child! But it just doesn't fit into Gāo's story (as Cuìlán or Sù.)

Pour être honnête, Gāo Cuìlán et Zhu Bajie n'interagissent que très peu dans ma version des événements. Dans le récit original, Sun Wukong vainc Zhu Bajie et Cuìlán retrouve son père. Tripitaka recrute ensuite Bajie et ils poursuivent leur route, sans jamais recroiser Cuìlán.

Dans ma version, où Cuìlán devient la Grande Préceptrice du Royaume des Femmes (et recroise donc le groupe), elle a la chance d'être protégée par la Reine du Royaume des Femmes. Zhu Bajie est également devenu disciple de Tripitaka et doit donc lui obéir ; toute tentative de harcèlement (ce que Zhu Bajie du récit original du Voyage en Occident n'aurait certainement pas manqué de faire) serait immédiatement condamnée. Dans la version LMK de cette histoire, Bajie est bien sûr ravi de revoir son ex-femme et tente de la reconquérir maintenant qu'il est un « démon repenti ». Tripitaka le réprimande à chaque fois qu'il est présent, mais lorsqu'il est trop occupé à repousser poliment les avances de la Reine, Wukong intervient pour attirer son attention en se moquant de Zhu Bajie, en le taquinant et en le provoquant sans cesse.

En réalité, Bajie se comporte simplement comme un dragueur agaçant pendant que les autres personnages sont occupés par la véritable intrigue (à savoir : empêcher la Reine du Royaume des Femmes d'épouser un moine censé être abstinent et trop poli pour la repousser ouvertement).

To be honest, Gāo Cuìlán and Zhu Bajie don't interact much in my version of events. In the original story, Sun Wukong defeats Zhu Bajie and Cuìlán is reunited with her father. Tripitaka then recruits Bajie and they continue on their way, never encountering Cuìlán again.

In my version, where Cuìlán becomes the Grand Preceptor of Women's Kingdom (and therefore does encounter the group again), she is lucky enough that she has the Queen of Women's Kingdom to protect her. Zhu Bajie is also, now, a disciple of Tripitaka and therefore must obey him, so any attempts at harassment (which Zhu Bajie of the original Journey to The West story would absolutely attempt) would be quickly condemned. In the LMK version of this story, Bajie is of course excited to see his ex-wife again and tries to win her back now that he's a 'reformed demon.' Tripitaka scolds him for this whenever present, but when he is too busy trying to politely fend off the Queen's affections, Wukong steps in to draw his attention by mocking, teasing and just generally provoking Zhu Bajie.
