LETS PLAY A GAME. It’s called: Who directed it TIM BURTON or HENRY SELICK

We’ll start with the 2009 Laika film Coraline based on the novel by Neil Gaiman. Do you know who directed it? Burton or Selick?

If you guessed Henry Selick, you would be correct. Tim Burton actually had absolutely nothing to do with Coraline at all in anyway ever. Reminder: Tim Burton has NOTHING to do with Coraline. At all. But that was an easy one. Let’s go to the Walt Disney Pictures adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel, James and the Giant Peach next.

Oh, look. It’s Henry Selick again! Tim Burton actually interacted with this project, though only as a producer. Bet that was tricky… Next one! Let’s go to the Disney/Touchstone Pictures film Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Yep that’s right. Even Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas was directed by Henry Selick. Though Burton wrote the poem and created the characters in which Nightmare was based he didn’t have much interaction with the project beyond that. At the time he had already signed off to direct the film Batman Returns and did not want to be involved with the “painstakingly slow process of stop-motion animation.”

Think of everything you and everyone you love. Yours pets, family, friends, games, movies, books, tv shows. You won’t get those back or be able to experience the joy from them again.

Think about all the Sunrises and Sunsets you will miss. All the opportunities. Your own kids and spouse. Your dream job. Your future grandchildren.

Think about the people who will miss you, who will be devastated.

I’m not saying not to have these feelings, but I am asking one thing-

thank you so much. and thank you to everyone who’s sent me very kind and supportive messages! i really don’t care if someone wants to go after me, but trying to shit on the whole digital art community like that is intolerable.

i have insecurities about my art as much as anyone, maybe even a bit more, but a big part of “selling” yourself is showing that confidence in your work and your prices. i know it’s hard, and too many amateur artists will undersell, and that becomes the norm, so when people see some actual fair prices, they’ll flip out and try to put us down. but the only way to combat this attitude is to ignore those people and encourage others to raise their prices to at least a minimum wage.

if you’re reading this and you’re currently underselling your work, i understand that stress and pressure of trying to just find that business, and it’s okay to start that way. but your goal should be to raise your prices over time until you get to those prices you think you deserve! as you and your audience grow, so will demand. it might take a while, and you might have to fluctuate your prices a bit until stuff works, but keep at it and you’ll find people willing to pay what you ask.

if you’re reading this as a potential commissioner (not of just me, but in general), i hope you can realize, if you don’t already, that art is a form of labor just like any other. it’s not easy, even if it appears to be. it takes years of practice and effort to reach levels of skill that people would be willing to pay for. work is work. time spent is time spent. respect artists like you would anyone else performing a service for you.

INGREDIENTS:

4 hamburger buns, split

1 head green leaf lettuce, leaves separated

1 beefsteak tomato, sliced

20 dill pickle slices

FOR THE CHICKEN

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1 cup dill pickle juice

1 ½ cups milk, divided

1 cup peanut oil

1 large egg

½ cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS:

Place a chicken breast on a cutting board. With your hand flat on top of it, carefully slice the chicken in half horizontally. Trim excess fat as needed.

In a large shallow baking dish, combine chicken, pickle juice and ½ cup milk; marinate for at least 30 minutes. Drain well.

Heat peanut oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.

In another large shallow baking dish, whisk together remaining 1 cup milk and egg. Stir in chicken to coat and drain excess milk mixture.

In a gallon size Ziploc bag or large bowl, combine chicken, flour and confectioners’ sugar; season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Working in batches, add chicken to the skillet and cook until evenly golden and crispy, about 4-5 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
