This is my little piece for @random-fandom-ramble, who named Ethari as a favourite character and requested a story contrasting a character’s ‘natural’ environment with where their story may take them. I hope you all enjoy!

The moonstone glowed with energy as it refracted the pale moonlight climbing through the arched doorway. Perfectly cut, the pearly white gemstone waited patiently for the incantation to be performed. Ethari watched over it, gazing intently at the shimmering mirage of colourless light shining off it’s every facet. All that remained was the spell, an ancient enchantment known only to a few, and to be used by Ethari for the first time.

Shadows danced and sang across the darkened ground, with only the dim glow of the new moon illuminating the thick forest. Ethari clung tightly to the coin pouch with one hand, and with the other held out his blade. Only he stood between the ghostly assassins and the ones he loved. Though not a fighter, Ethari would give everything he could to protect them. The dark figures moved silently towards him, weaving through the trees, death in their hands.

Sensing the power of the full moon through the open doors, Ethari inhaled and exhaled in unison with the ebb and flow of the magic of the moonlight. Now he could only see the moonstone, and the light reflecting off of it. Even the gentlest of shimmers was important, the power of the appearance of the stone was vital to the magic Ethari wanted to imbue upon it. “Et nitido, Luna lucem infusio invisibilitas.”

Ethari sliced through the shades, his enchanted blade scattering their forms into the air, but they kept on coming. He ran, faster and faster as the shadows closed in around him. The sword didn’t felt right in his hand, but weapons never had. Even so, he had to keep the coins safe, so he would fight with every last breath, for as long as necessary, until they were out of harm’s way. A shadow jumped down in front of him, but as quick as a flash Ethari thrust his blade into the chest of the creature, scattering it into the wind.

Magical energy rushed through Ethari and into the gemstone. The sensation was at once agonising and exhilarating as the strength of the full moon poured through him, but as soon as it had begun it had ended. The moonstone was aglow with raw magical power, ready to be utilised by the next assassin to leave on a mission. Of course, that was too late for Runaan and Rayla, as both had left on their own mission a few days earlier. Ethari had done all he could to protect them, but he feared it would not be enough. He held the moonstone in his hand, as a tear flowed down his cheek and dropped onto the floor. May this stone keep safe whoever may wield it, so that they may be with their loved ones again.

The Magic of Animation ~ Scenery

Oof, I don’t have one myself so my advice will be shoddy. I can say that my “routine” suffered a crippling blow once I got wifi and a handheld device that could connect to it. Also, my daily routine changed once I finished school and, myself being ADD, having a lot of unscheduled time completely threw off my creative output.

So, my advice is as follows:

ditch all distractions

have a scheduled time and place to write, even if it’s during a lecture class or while on public transport, that’s a set time

record random ideas whenever they come to you

but keep them organized so you can sift through them during your writing time if you want a new project

if your main project feels boring or is overwhelming you, distract yourself with another idea

don’t sacrifice writing time for other distractions just because you can’t think of anything to write; write anything, lists or fanfic or self-insert romances, anything

handwriting is great and good for your brain, so practice exercises and random ideas on paper

write first, make playlists and moodboards later

save any research for after your writing session

let others in your house know this is your writing time and not to interrupt you

have a drink and tidy, healthy snacks available so you don’t have to keep getting up when you feel peckish, also healthy snacks are better for your brain than carbs and sugar

keep pets, children, and other sentient disatractions at bay

Writing bloggers carry on a lot about routines, and if you have professional deadlines or self-imposed deadlines that’s fair, but honestly I can’t with routines. If you want something neat and organized to help you reach your goals, then your routine should be tailored to fit your own needs.

Rayla and Callum live at the Storm Spire. She guards Zym and Callum studies with Ibis. They stay in contact with Ethari. And with Amaya and Janai.

The coin secret will come out and Ethari will head out to find Runaan. Rayla and Callum won't go with him. But they'll put him in touch with Nyx, who owes Rayla for saving her life, to be his guide. Ethari enjoys having a sassy young woman around again. And as they travel it's revealed that she knows the human mage Viren pretty well because she used to sell him stuff. Like soulfang serpents in Skywing baskets.

Janai and Amaya try to solve the mystery surrounding Aaravos and Queen Aditi. It leads to lots of information about Katolis and Amaya has to confront something unexpected about Sarai and Harrow.

Ezran returns to Katolis but not as king. He appoints a regent, Opeli. Through her he learns more Katolis stuff about his mom and dad.

At least part of the secret of the Earthblood box in the Banther Lodge is revealed.

Rayla and Callum work on dragon politics with Zubeia and others, angling for peace. We get more about other elf races. Earthblood elves for sure.

They also talk about Rayla's parents because they're living at the place where they were coined and kidnapped. More flashbacks. The story of how they knew Runaan and Ethari is revealed and it's a bloody one.

Aaravos punishes Viren for his betrayal by having Claudia coin him and finally confirms that he watched Viren put Runaan into that coin (and confirms that the mirror's reversed reflection means it's on). He gives Viren the karma he has deserved since S1E8.

Bonus points if the elves in the coins have been able to be together all along and Viren pops into the coin dimension surroundes by three very angry stabby Moonshadows.

Bonus bonus points if Runaan stops Rayla's parents from killing him. And actually starts to understand how broken Viren is. Because you see, Viren was only trying to save his daughter. And that will hit hard with Runaan, and with Rayla's parents. And we know now how tactically clever Rayla's mom is.

I hadn't thought I would actually get a redemption arc for Viren, but I see it now. Just imagine Viren admitting Runaan was right about that mirror. What hearing that will do for Runaan.

And then when he is freed, he insists that Viren gets freed, too. And Ethari isn't allowed to kill him. If Viren and Runaan had a moment where Viren said he deserved to die, where he admits that the hard limits of life and death should not be messed with, and Runaan should take him, and Runaan says maybe he will, but not yet, and until he decides to kill Viren, he will fight to keep him alive.

or my ARC TWO (s4 and s5) predictions

So. S3 happened. A lot happened, not only in the season itself, but in the way it wrapped up 90% of the main arcs of the first main arc of the show. Even before it was announced that there would be three main arcs (and even before the seven seasons planned in total reveal, if I remember correctly) I had three main predictions

Narratively, at least one timeskip has to happen

Aaravos as endgame big bad and a unifying threat for both elves and humans to deal with on a large scale

Zym would be home by S4, and it wouldn’t fix Everything

So honestly, watching S3, and given how the season ended, I was gratified more than shocked. There were shocking moments in the season, for sure, but narrative wise, things had panned out the way I’d predicted, if not even better than I thought they would. 

I also definitely got things wrong, though. I thought they’d return Zym home a little later, Rayllum had another season to go before being canon, and that returning Zym home would mean less than it ended up doing so, as I thought it would be a gesture from just one human from one kingdom, not Duren and Katolis together from the King and crown prince, amid other elves and important humans like Janai (the new Sunfire queen) and General Amaya. 

That being said, here are my predictions going forward, as an expansion on the three I’m still holding, and the three that may lie ahead

A Timeskip

I’ve been gunning for a timeskip since March 2019, and honestly longer, if I think of when I first wanted it internally. It was something I was always very sure on narratively, just because it made too much sense, for these reasons down below:

The show had no fixed end of when Zym had to be returned. With no ticking clock (think of how in ATLA, everything was mandated by the Comet’s return) it gave an opportunity for things to stretch beyond just a few weeks, months, or even years

Seeing Zym grow into a slightly terrifying force of nature would make all too much sense, and while untrue, give weight to Viren’s words that he “would’ve become the most powerful creature in the world!”

Give Callum a reasonable amount of time, largely off screen, to connect to the other primal sources, otherwise multiple ones would have to be crammed into one or more seasons and it could begin to feel repetitious to see him connect to five other ones

Now it’s been confirmed that there will be a timeskip in between Books Three and Four. Yet because I wanted it so much, I did doubt myself a little. I also know that some people are hesitant about having a timeskip, and that’s totally understandable. (I personally got used to them because the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise, including the tv show, has five timeskips.) The main concern seems to be of what if the timeskip is too big, but I don’t think that would happen for a number of reasons.

I’m personally betting on anytime from three months to one year as the time skip between S3 and S4, specifically six months. We don’t want to keep Aaravos cocooned for too long and have to keep flashing back for information, but long enough for things to settle. A timeskip of this manner would:

Allow Ezran time to grow and settle into his kingship in a time of peace - or working towards it in better ways than he was previously able to

Solidify Ezran’s council (Opeli and Corvus) and Soren reinstated as crown guard for the true king

Give a reasonable amount of time for Callum to more or less master sky magic and set hit sights on another arcanum

Rayla having fulfilled her duty as a Dragon Guard for a while, so that when the story picks up again her leaving it makes sense

Show off more established Rayllum, in a more secure way than in the immediate aftermath of 3x05 did

Zym can grow (and his relationship with his mother) now that he is no longer what binds the Trio together in quite the same manner

But mostly, for post-war politics which I’ll get into it down below

Post-3x09 Politics

Season three hinted at a lot of really interesting Xadian politics, and told us some really important things too. Namely that the elves are non united and each type/group seems to operate under their own command. The Dragon Queen is less of a reigning monarch and more just a monarch for the dragons themselves, which some elves then choose to serve. It also shows that among dragons there’s big issues of dissent, like Sol Regem, a previous monarch (however that works) being uncaring about burning his technical prince alive.

That’s not to say that what Ezran and to a certain extent, Katolis, did doesn’t matter. Katolis and Duren’s alliance will be stronger than ever, and with Janai as the Sunfire Queen, you’ll have her factions as well (having Amaya, who was such a prominent General at the Breach, in a relationship with her / on her side doesn’t hurt either). 

I am curious about the other human kingdoms though, as two lost their rulers and had no replacement mentioned, but they clearly aligned with Kasef. In addition, King Ahling will have survived and recovered from his encounter with the shadowy assassins, but will have to come to terms with how his son died. And it was still never confirmed to any of the human kingdoms that Xadia hadn’t staged that attack in the first place, but Viren with dark magic.

Things will be strained in more ways than one, and I’m really excited to see where it goes. And also how it can reflect in our main characters, specifically the trio… 

Political Trio Theory

This is the theory I’m most excited for it, and it hinges on our core three: Ezran, Callum, and Rayla. Each are completely different people than they were at the start of the series and they’ve grown so much and have chosen new responsibilities or paths for themselves. And of course, because it’s me and my brain, I have gone the angst route.

Ezran and Rayla’s relationship is one that is one of my favourites and has always been very sweet. They don’t tend to really disagree and Ezran was the first one to trust her, even if he was the only one out of the two princes who was her target. Rayla to a certain extent also takes care of him, and it’s Ezran in more ways than one that brings her and Callum together. So I think, to a certain degree in the next arc of the show, we’re also going to see him rip them apart. 

That’s not to say Ezran will do so maliciously or on purpose, or that I think Callum and Rayla will break up. I don’t think any of those things. But I kept thinking about Rayla’s line in 2x08: “You’re not my king. But you are my friend.” 

Rayla is still an elf from Xadia with her own duties, and her own political loyalties. Ezran also has a different responsibility to his own people, the other human kingdoms, and to upholding peace. Callum, meanwhile, is caught in between. He’s a human who will likely live in Xadia and can connect to a primal, but he’s still a prince of Katolis. He loves Rayla but Ezran is his brother and the only family (other than Amaya) that he has left. 

So basically, I think Ezran and Rayla are gonna disagree on something major, and while I think Callum will align a bit more with Rayla’s viewpoint, I think he may still choose to stand by his brother’s side. What the disagreement could be about, or why, I don’t know. But I think Callum is going to be torn between two places and people, and he’ll have to make some really hard decisions. I also think that Rayla will understand him standing by Ezran better than Ezran would if Callum just flat out sided by her, but that is just flat out speculation. 

This would also take the external conflict and internalize it hard, particularly because not only have Ezran and Rayla never disagreed to the same magnitude that Callum and Rayla did, but that they would probably work to resolve it because of the effect it’s having on Callum, too. 

Our trio has been our solid ground, to speak, for all of Arc 1, and given that Arc 2 is really going to shake things up, and the idea of peace being just as hard as war (but more worthwhile) I wouldn’t be surprised to see it extremely tested before they re-solidify, stronger than ever.

The Coins

When we see Viren after the fall, it’s unknown if the bag of coins is with him. However we do know that Rayla knows there are elves in there, and that Gren knowns Runaan is one of them. Rayla also knows that her parents didn’t run away and would therefore think them worthy of being saved. 

Viren and Claudia being spotted would be motivation enough for her to leave the Dragon Guard, perhaps, along with Callum and some allies to try and find the coins. I also think a confrontation between Claudia, Callum, and Rayla is coming eventually, given how messy their history is and how much resentment Claudia would hold towards Rayla (who is the reason Viren died, after all). 

I think by the end of Arc 2 (aka s5) Rayla’s parents and Runaan will be out of the coins so we have everyone together before the final Arc and all the fun possibilities and character work that can bring. It also might be one of those moments, since S5 will presumably end on a terrible note (especially since Arc 1 ended on such a high note at the end of the day) in a very ‘Empire-Strikes-Back’ sort of way, with of “at least we have this good thing that happened / we’re all alive.” 

Aaravos Backstory

We got more hints of this in S3, but given that something is going to be emerging out of that cocoon at one point, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get more of the full story. Especially since now Claudia is embroiled in Viren’s relationship with Aaravos, which might deteriorate while hers simultaneously improves.

I also think it’s important to get out Aaravos’ backstory, and why he was imprisoned, and all of the possibly good and evil things he’s done explained to the audience at least, so we can understand the full weight and consequences of why him getting out of that mirror is a “Oh shit no” moment when the time comes. 

As I've been planning different posts and theories I've realised that Lujanne could be the most valuable and powerful ally Rayla Ethari and their allies could have when they try to free their family from the coins.

Lujanne is an incredibly powerful illusion mage whose illusions are realistic, tangible and long lasting and these may hold the key to their victory. Lujanne could team up with Soren who could tell her what illusions would be most effective on his sister and his father. This could be very useful as these illusions could be used to separate father and daughter, thus making it easier for those confronting Viren.

She could also create a substitute coin purse that could be sneakily swapped out with the real one during the duel/fight, deceiving Viren and allowing him to believe, at least for a short while, that he had succeeded in saving some very powerful bargaining chips.

The greatest bonus for this plan is that Lujanne doesn't need to be anywhere near the battle/duel to watch over her illusions, thus eliminating the risk of Claudia discovering her role in this rescue attempt until it is far too late.

By the time either one of them realise that they have been tricked the coins will be far away, with their prisoners already freed or about to be freed.

Season 3 Spoilers Below!!

So Season 3 is out, and something I’d like to analyze are the geopolitics of Xadia. When Viren leads the army through the border of Xadia, he goes alone to Lux Aurea(a Sunfire “stronghold”, whether it’s a fort or a true city is up for debate since we see it as a pretty large place), asking them to allow Katolis to pass through to the Dragon Queen’s lair. Xadia is not a unified place, and the fact that it would even be a possibility for the Sunfire Elves to assist a force aiming to kill the Dragon Queen(what was previously thought to be the monarch of all of Xadia) means that there must be several rivaling polities that make up Xadia.

We see this again later, with how there are no troops of elves that come to aid the Dragon Queen in the final battle except for Janai’s army of Sunfire elves(which came to the battle because Viren attacked their queen and seized a part of Lux Aurea), and a few independent elves like Ibis and Rayla. If she was truly the ruler of all of Xadia, why wouldn’t there at least be Moonshadow elves to protect her, like the previous Dragonguard was made up of, and the Moonshadow assassin troops sent to avenge Avidanzum and kill Harrow at the start of the series?

It seems the Dragonguard(and the village that ascribed it great significance and honor) was a small faction of Moonshadow elves who chose their alliance with the Queen, and that all of Xadia doesn’t naturally bow down to her. The Sunfire elves do attack Katolis at The Breach in Season 2, but that could be chocked up to anti-human racism in their culture, and not a command by the Dragon Queen(who had also fallen gravely ill, and about 2 weeks prior to the final episode(which depending on the timeline, might have been at the time the Sunfire elves attacked)).

As for the Dragons, Avizandum was the “King of the Dragons”, which now seems to imply that the Dragons are their own polity in Xadia and not an aristocracy/upper class of normal Xadian nations, with some groups allying with them, and having historical close ties to the elves.

Overall, the land of Xadia(notice how it’s also referred to as “the land”, while the Human Kingdoms are referred to as kingdoms or “the Pentarchy”, implying a higher unification, ununified tribal territories were often referred to as “the land of the [name]s”) is decentralized and ununified, with apparently multiple different polities(some of which may not even be unified themselves, like the Dragonguard and Moonshadow assassins operating out of a small Moonshadow village), that share a vague culture of being magical, hating humans, and having some ties to dragons.

@pokeblader3 this is brilliant. I love your take on why no one else came to defend the Dragon Queen. Time may also have been a factor, but it’s been said that each race of elves generally keeps to itself. Puts me in mind of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men in Tolkien’s writings. I bet we’ll see a stronger alliance between all the various elves and at least some humans as the story progresses. 

There was at least one Dragon Guard who was a Skywing, though. I kind of think maybe the rest of the Dragon Guard were all Skywings? Because they all fled when Thunder died, and there are two ways down from the Storm Spire. Only one is survivable without wings, and that’s the way Viren was coming up. I think Rayla’s parents were the only Moonshadows, the only non-Skywings, in the Dragon Guard. And the only ones who stayed.

Moonshadows are very stubborn. But sometimes that’s a good thing. Skywings value freedom highly. Even Ibis told Callum to flee. I think it’s what Skywings do: live to fight another day. Whereas Moonshadows don’t show fear, value honor, and have no fear of death. They really do have opposite arcana.

Hmm. I wonder if there was any punishment at all on the Skywing Dragon Guards for abandoning their post. I hope so.

And I think you’re onto something with this connection between the Storm Spire and the Silvergrove. Maybe these Moonshadows specifically, and only these Moonshadows, have forged a connection with the dragon rulers. I wonder what that story is! It could explain why Runaan agreed to work for Zubeia, or why she knew to ask him. It could have a big impact on the future of the plot now that Zym is reunited with his mom, too.

This is pure headcanon, but maybe, for some reason, the authority of Avizandum had decreased over the years, and only Silvergrove and a few Skywing Elves still followed him, whereas the other Elves separated and ruled themselves. That would explain why the Dragon Guard, other than Rayla’s parents, were chosen despite being rather unsuitable for their position.

To make the fighting scenes in my low fantasy novel more realistic, I went to see a trainer for historical sword-fighting last week, both to barrage her with questions and to develop realistic choreographies for the fight scenes in the novel. Since I figured some of what she told me might be useful for you too, I put together a small list for you. Big thanks to Gladiatores Munich and Jeanne for making time! (Here are some more pictures if you’re interested.)

Caveat: I’m by no means a sword-fighting expert myself, so take these nuggets with a grain of salt – I might have misremembered or misinterpreted some of the things Jeanne told me. If I did, feel free to tell me.

1.) Weapon choices need to make sense

Let’s start with a truism: always ensure your character’s weapons make sense for a.) their profession, b.) their cultural background and c.) the environment they’re going to fight in. A farmer probably couldn’t afford a sword and might use a knife or threshing flail instead, and someone who doesn’t want to be noticed probably wouldn’t be milling about sporting a glaive or another large weapon. Also, soldiers native to a country with wide open plains would be more likely to carry long-range melee weapons such as spears or large swords, than those from a country consisting of mostly jungle or dense forests. The same applies to situations: if your character is going to be fighting in close quarters (even just a normal house), he’d get little value out of a spear or even a longsword, as there’d be no space to swing it effectively.

2.) Boldness often beats skill

In real swordfights, recklessness was often more important than technique. The fighter less afraid of getting injured would often push harder, allowing them to overpower even opponents with better technique.

3.) Even a skilled fighter rarely stands a chance when outnumbered

While a skilled (or lucky) fighter might win a two-versus-one, it’d be extremely unlikely for even a single master swordsman to win against superior numbers, even just three and if they’re below his skill level. The only way to plausibly pull this off would be to split the opponents up, perhaps by luring them into a confined space where you could take them on one by one. The moment you’re surrounded, you’re probably done for – because, unlike in Hollywood, they wouldn’t take turns attacking but come at you all at once.

4.) Dual-wielding was a thing

… at least in some cultures. I often heard people say that people using a weapon in each hand is an invention of fiction. And while my instructor confirmed that she knew of no European schools doing this—if they did, it’s not well-documented—she said it was a thing in other cultures. Example of this include the dual wakizashi in Japan or tomahawk and knife in North America. However, one of the biggest problems with the depiction of dual wielding in novels/movies/games are the “windmill”-type attacks where the fighter swings their weapons independently, hitting in succession rather than simultaneously. Normally you’d always try hitting with both weapons at once, as you’d otherwise lose your advantage.

5.) Longswords were amazing

Longswords might seem boring in comparison to other weapons, but they were incredibly effective, especially in combat situations outside the battlefield. The crossguard allowed for effective blocking of almost any kind of attack (well, maybe not an overhead strike of a Mordaxt, but still), the pommel was also used as a powerful “blunt” weapon of its own that could crack skulls. Though they were somewhat less effective against armored opponents, the long, two-handed hilt allowed for precise thrusts at uncovered body parts that made up for it.

6.)  “Zweihänder” were only used for very specific combat situations

Zweihänder—massive two-handed swords—were only used for specific purposes and usually not in one-on-one combat as is often seen in movies or games. One of these purposes was using their reach to break up enemy formations. In fact, one type of two-handed sword even owed its name to that purpose: Gassenhauer (German, Gasse = alley, Hauer = striker)—the fighters literally used it to strike “alleys” into an enemy formation with wide, powerful swings.

7.) It’s all about distance

While I was subconsciously aware of this, it might be helpful to remember that distance was an incredibly important element in fights. The moment your opponent got past your weapons ideal range, it was common to either switch to a different weapon or just drop your weapon and resort to punching/choking. A good example of this are spears or polearms—very powerful as long as you maintain a certain range between you and your opponent, but the moment they get too close, your weapon is practically useless. That’s also why combatants almost always brought a second weapon into battle to fall back one.

8.) Real fights rarely lasted over a minute

Another truism, but still useful to remember: real fights didn’t last long. Usually, they were over within less than a minute, sometimes only seconds – the moment your opponent landed a hit (or your weapon broke or you were disarmed), you were done for. This is especially true for combatants wearing no or only light armor.

9.) Stop the pirouettes

Unfortunately, the spinning around and pirouetting that makes many fight scenes so enjoyable to watch (or read) is completely asinine. Unless it’s a showfight, fighters would never expose their backs to their opponent or even turn their weapon away from them.

10.)  It still looks amazing

If your concern is that making your fight scenes realistic will make them less aesthetic, don’t worry. Apart from the fact that the blocks, swings and thrusts still look impressive when executed correctly, I personally felt that my fights get a lot more gripping and visceral if I respect the rules. To a certain extent, unrealistic and flashy combat is plot armor. If your characters can spin and somersault to their heart’s content and no one ever shoves a spear into their backs as they would have in real life, who survives and who doesn’t noticeably becomes arbitrary. If, on the other hand, even one slip-up can result in a combatant’s death, the stakes become palpable.
