Hello! Call me Marijn! They/them Old enough to get gray hairs apparently, ADHD, American ——— Current hyperfixation: Star Wars has gotten me in a death grip send help ——— This blog is basically a dump for anything I like + my hyperfixations. Avatar made in ThePastelHobbit’s Picrew. Banner from Google.
Oh, look, I finally made a pinned post. Okay, here’s the important stuff:
Hi! I’m Marijn (rhymes with line, if you’re curious). I’m a 26-year-old aroace nonbinary person (they/them pronouns). I have ADHD, so sometimes I’ll get a hyperfixation and my blog will temporarily become mostly that thing for a bit. I’ll try to keep my current hyperfixation updated in the blog description. My previous url was marilleraine.
Originally, I didn’t try to keep any kind of organization on this blog. And by originally I mean “for the first few years.” So a HUGE chunk of my posts aren’t tagged, or only tagged for common triggers and what I wanted to save. I now try to maintain some kind of organization, though, so I’m making a list of tags I use here. Also lists of my main fandoms, blorbos, OCs, and sideblogs. (If there’s no link, that’s because I haven’t made it yet. This is a work in progress.)
Please note that due to my ADHD my tagging is inconsistent at best. There will be untagged triggers, discourse, and real-world shit here. Please take care of your mental health.

Also, for your perusal, my controversial opinions. (If there’s no link check back in a few days) (Some of these should not be controversial, but they are, so they’re on there.) i highly recommend reading this before following me, but if you don’t, whatever, I can’t force you.
Finally, please be aware that I do not donate to strangers on the internet. I just don’t have the time, energy, or executive function to ensure every person I see asking for money is legit, so if you come in my inbox asking for money you’re getting blocked at best. If you’re actually legit, I’m sorry, but I can’t help you. There are other people who help boost fundraisers and the like, go find one of them. Please.

They literally sail over the edge of it after passing through a hole in a wall of ice. They fall off. They get back to the other side by passing through the whole ocean.
But also there’s a globe on, like, everyone’s desk.
See, part of the conceit of the PotC trilogy is that all myths are true. Nearly every supernatural element in the franchise has a root in some real world mythology or pirate lore, although some of them are mashed together.
Another thing is that they take place at the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, and the more the map gets filled in, and the more the Royal Navy takes power, there less room there is for the mystical and supernatural in the world. This is explicitly called out in At World's End with the death of the kraken:
Barbossa: The world used to be a bigger place.
Jack: The world's still the same. There's just... less in it.
The only way to access the world of the supernatural is through the supernatural itself. You can only get to the Isla de Muerta with Jack's compass that points to whatever you desire, or if you already know where its is. You need Tia Dalma's map to find the edge of the world. To access the supernatural, you need to already be immersed in it.
The pirates world isn't flat, it's round - but because the edge of the world exists in myth, it therefore exists in reality. The pirates are able to find it through supernatural means, but if, say, someone like Norrington just sailed in the same general direction, he wouldn't end up in the same place.
If you look at it in a particular way, the Pirates specifically function by FAIRY RULES: obscure codes of law and formality that they are irrevocably bound to abide by...except when you get the wording wrong.
When we go to Tortuga (or any pirate controlled space) we leave behind the sensibilities of the real world and enter this bizarre perpetual revel of debauchery and violence that could never sustain itself in a world bound by sense.
That makes Jack our Puck character, a trickster of tricksters who can invert your fortunes just by letting him talk to you.
It also makes Will into a changeling, born of the fairyworld, adopted by mortals, and fated to return to it in what makes for a doomed love story. Hell, one might say that the reason Will's swords are SO GOOD is because they contain an element of myth about them: they're the IDEA of swords, true to how they would be in myth.
I've always had trouble understanding the meta surrounding the Luke vs Vader scene in rotj. Just the way they relate it to attachment didn't quite click for me because it still felt like Luke was banking on his father's attachment to their bio relationship being greater than his attachment/loyalty to the emperor.
The ones that suggest that Luke makes that decision because he is giving in to his anger and he recognizes that it is more than his anger sound a little better. But reading it the way you put it "Winning is suicide because he would lose his soul"Oohhhh that was a direct arrow to finally clicking for me.
I can't explain it, I don't think you're saying anything different than other pro-Jedi speeches but you articulated it in a way that I can finally put it together in my head. Maybe because you link it to the cave scene and not to the conversation with Obi-Wan (which is part of that but makes more sense with the cave)
Luke lets go of his anger at that realization, that succumbing is a condemnation for himself not because anger=bad and he recognizes that this "death" (the metaphorical death from which Obi-Wan saw Anakin's death) would lead him to be like Vader and he is more than that and there was a time when Anakin was too.More than his anger, more than his fear, more than his hatred. More than the emperor's (replaceable) attack dog.
Luke was choosing a literal death over a metaphorical one because he decided he was going to trust his friends to succeed and realized that beating Vader was an empty victory.Vader changing his mind was no longer Luke's motive or goal, just a happy coincidence because Luke can't control things, he can only control himself.
Oh I'm glad it helped you! I had rewatched RotJ recently when showing the whole series to a friend who had never seen it. Allow me to indulge a bit and expand on the idea.
This is the post Anon refers to. I actually had more of that part, but realized it was a post about hanleia and it didn't really need more. I tend to go on and on.
But at the time when I wrote that post I had rewatched RotJ, and I had forgotten how Palpatine tries to do the same thing he did to Anakin. He's trying to get Luke afraid and tries to use attachments against him just like with Anakin.
And Luke gets drawn in. He is afraid, he is angry, he lashes out at Palpatine, but Vader is the one that catches his blade.
He fights Vader viciously. He's lost faith in Vader. He sees him as just a tool of Palpatine. An obstacle to Luke's hatred.
I would also like to add how this fight mirrors Mustafar! Luke is the one pushing forward and it's Vader that's the one giving ground (Yet another reason to love the choreography of that fight because RotS came later so they were mirroring this moment between Luke and Vader not the other way around).
Luke slams Vader with strikes and then cuts off Vader's hand.
And it's just like the hand he lost in Empire Strikes Back. A mechanical prostetic. The price Luke paid for acting on his fear. Going to Cloud City didn't save his friends, they escaped by themselves. It had only put himself at risk and in the end he had lost his hand and learned a terrible secret that he might not have been ready to face at the time.
------
And Luke stares at the hand and that's his moment of realization. The similarities between himself and his father. When Luke thought he was killing Vader in the cave, he actually killed himself, and now he can finally see it. He finally understands Yoda and Obi-Wan. They see his father in him in the best and worst ways. Yoda says he cannot be a Jedi until he faces Darth Vader again, but Yoda never says that Luke must defeat Vader to be a Jedi. He needs to face him, and in doing so facing the darkness in himself and his own fears.
Luke tells Obi-Wan that he can't kill his own father and Obi-Wan says then they've lost, but Obi-Wan isn't talking about killing Anakin Skywalker. He never has. He's always spoken about Vader. Now, I'm not saying he was speaking metaphorically in the moment, but Obi-Wan sees nothing left of Anakin. Darth Vader is fear when you think about it. He was created by fear, he causes fear. Darth Vader (fear) destroyed Anakin Skywalker, and if Luke can't kill that fear then he will be just as lost.
So in facing Vader, Luke faces himself and what could happen if he gives in to darkness and anger and hatred, just as Palpatine wants.
So Luke sees the hand and it all clicks as Palpatine laughs in delight at the blow. Luke and Anakin Skywalker are one and the same. Vader (fear) trying to consume him just as it consumed Anakin Skywalker.
Luke let's go of his fear, in doing so his hope in Anakin is rekindled. He accepts his friends might die, but he believes in them. He accepts Vader may not turn back to the light, but he still tries to get through to him. He lets go of his attachment and he is a Jedi Knight. He passed his final trial. He is no longer control by fear. So all that's left is love and hope.
Palpatine sees that. He's angry. He is going to make Luke afraid through suffering and death, and if he doesn't give in then he will kill him.
Luke calls out to Vader in pain: Father, help me, please. Because with true understanding of himself, he knows Obi-Wan is wrong. That Anakin isn't gone. He calls out because he has hope still. He believes Anakin is still there. He believes he can still reach him.
As for Anakin, it might seem like this is a continuation of a pattern. He betrays Palpatine because of his attachment to Luke you might say. I had got stuck on that for awhile. It seems like he hasn't changed at all. But.
But Vader wanted Luke to be like him for a reason. We already know he was willing to betray Palpatine. He offered Luke the galaxy at his side. What matters is that Luke joins HIM, not the other way around. He wanted his son beside him in darkness. He believes it's far too late for him to step back into the light, as he says to Luke when Luke surrenders: It's too late for me, son. Vader believes the only way he can have Luke is if Luke falls, so he'll do anything to see it happen. Even attack him.
But Luke doesn't fall.
Anakin Skywalker's fear of Padme's death led to her death. Because he focused on his own suffering. He did everything he could to keep her beside him, refusing to accept her death and destroying both her and himself to try to stop his own suffering, which of course made his suffering all the more terrible. It was selfishness. He didn't consider how she would feel. It was about him.
He watches Luke getting tortured and he sees that Luke will not give in like Anakin Skywalker did. Luke has chosen the light. A path that Vader believes he can never go down again. Luke will never stand beside him.
And he accepts it.
Vader killed Padme when he struck out at her, his fear and paranoia making him believe Padme betrayed him. It led to him to killing the person he was trying to save. His fear greater than his love for her.
Vader sees he's doing the same thing. He's letting Luke die because of his own attachment to him. He wants Luke beside him so badly that he's letting Palpatine torture him in front of him. Letting Luke die rather than accept he can't have Luke beside him.
Anakin finally wakes up. He intercedes. He accepts that he can never be with his son and in doing so finally lets go of his attachments and fears and selfish desires.
And all that's left is love and hope.
That's what saves Anakin Skywalker. He hasn't redeemed himself to the galaxy. He doesn't do anything to ensure Death Star II is blown up. If he had done nothing the Emperor still would have died from the Rebel's attack. If Luke had not come nothing big picture-wise would have changed. The Rebels still win.
Luke faces his fear and he becomes a Jedi.
Vader lets go of his attachment and saves Anakin Skywalker, and by doing that, he is able to save Luke as well. That's the story we are being told.
Anakin's 'redemption' does not matter to the Galaxy at large. It matters to the people that love him Luke and Obi-Wan (who in book media guides him into the Force which I love). And it also matters to Leia, Han, Lando, the people that love Luke, because goodness spreads outwards.
That's the story of Star Wars. There is good, and that's all it takes, just a little bit of good will be able to push back the darkness and spread outward. A small rebel force can beat an empire, a small bit of good can lead you away from evil.
congratulations to Jack for managing to get my to hyper fixate very, very hard on a fanfiction for the first time in my life, art is slowly clawing it’s way out of me like a particularly nightmarish parasite and it has already gotten me pacing and scrolling their blog.
I come into the fandom of the Guides Verses bearing gifts (only one piece of art but it sounds wrong when it’s not plural):
(To anyone who doesn’t know this is fanart for the stunning fanfiction, the Guides Verses by @jackdaw-kraai, this is set about a dayish after the last chapter in the bar fight one, I imagine the actual Suite would be much prettier but backgrounds)
Some ones without the dramatic lightning, with notes about my headcanons for this, and with Jareshka:
(Purple text = Your eyes are drawn to Luke (due to the teeth + glowing eyes + generally more details) not Vader, while it would be easy to provoke him Luke is the bigger danger here
Brighter red text = I tried to interpret the Jareshka as well as I could as I don’t think I’ve ever seen fanart of it yet, might’ve gotten it wrong
Black text = They glow dimmer through the lens hence only erasing one shadow
Darker red text: (His mouth is open as he was drinking and/or speaking, whoever’s the POV character interrupted something) grandson of the force, Child of the Desert, AND Champion of the Storm, he is inhuman in noticeable ways if you pay close enough attention, especially so soon after a Flight (and the less than civilised play with Vader) (also claws))

Season one of fairy tail is like. Let’s spin a wheel and see whose traumatic backstory we’ll relive today! Except Natsu kept running away with his fingers in his ears everytime it landed on him so they didn’t do his until the end of the entire goddamn anime
“This means… of Rocky, possessive. Of the speaker.”
“My.”
“Correct. But only for names.”
“So you’re calling me…?”
Rocky repeats the word: “My Grace. Yes.”
“Are there other Graces? Why do you need to specify?”
Rocky considers this, tapping his xenonite-encased claws idly against the floor.
“No other Grace,” Rocky says. “We just do this.”
“Like an honorific,” Grace guesses. “It goes before everyone’s name? Everyone you know?”
Rocky whirs in surprise. “No, no, no. Not at all.”
“Okay, then who? What makes me qualify?”
Rocky is silent for a moment.
“...Does this offend Grace?” he asks, voice lower.
Grace blinks. “No! I don’t think so. Is there a reason to be offended?”
“Good,” Rocky says, relieved. Grace is starting to recognize what Eridian relief sounds like. “No, no reason.”
“Who else do you call that?”
“You don’t have this on Earth?”
Grace considers. What for, friends? He couldn’t call Marissa “my Marissa.” That would be weird.
“I still don’t know what it means,” he settles on. “So I couldn’t tell you.”
Rocky groans in frustration. He’s a very impatient tutor. “We just say it.”
“Are you my Rocky?” Grace asks. He hits the two keys to make the my note.
“I don’t know!” Rocky says. “You decide this.”
“I decide? Who do you use it for?”
“You. Adrian. I will use it for my pebbles.”
Grace blinks. “So few?”
Rocky shifts. “I am… you do not have the word yet. Eridian who works alone often, not close to many other Eridians.”
“What, mechanical engineer?”
Rocky chitters with amusement. “Acceptable.”
“Is Adrian your only friend?”
Rocky draws back, like he’s taken offense. “I have friends. Coworkers. But different.”
So just Adrian. And him.
“This worries you,” Rocky says.
“Adrian is your mate,” Grace points out. “I’m not your mate.”
“Correct. You are not. You do not like to be a mate.”
Grace isn’t sure how to respond to that, so he ignores it.
“I’m your friend,” Grace says.
Rocky hesitates, for a second. “...Correct.”
“Like your coworkers.”
“No.”
Grace sighs, rubbing his hand across his face. Okay, maybe that’s fair. It’s not like he felt about any of his coworkers like he feels about Rocky.
“Best friend,” Grace amends. “You’re my best friend, too.”
Rocky hums. “Acceptable.”
“Just acceptable? Now you are offending me. Can you just explain?”
This makes Rocky fall silent for a minute longer than usual. Grace is half-ready to apologize and to say let’s move on and to retype his own name without the superfluous my.
“The Earth ‘best friend’ is not strong enough,” Rocky says finally. “It does not translate this way.”
Grace runs his fingers through his hair, a little nervous, for some reason. “Okay.”
“It is…” Rocky pauses. He has to pause more often, now that they’re not using the translator, to simplify his language. “It means that I am not Rocky without my Grace. You are part of… of the whole. When I wake up, I think of you. When I work. When I eat. When I think I am going to die.”
Rocky speaks slowly, but it’s still a lot of Eridian for Grace to grasp all at once. Even as he works out the sentences in his head, he can feel hot tears rising in his eyes.
“It means that when you are sick, I am sick,” Rocky continues. “And it means I will take care of you, because taking care of you is taking care of myself.”
Grace bunches up his sleeve, wiping it across his face, blinking furiously.
Rocky’s voice is soft. “So Grace is part of Rocky. Grace is like a cell. You see? My Grace.”
Grace is quiet, for a moment, trying to get himself together. When he speaks, his voice is shaky.
“...Oh.”
Rocky hums, pressing his carapace gently against Grace’s arm. “You are leaking. Does this make you sad?”
Grace shakes his head, sniffing, crossing his arms across his knees and resting his chin on his sleeves. “Not at all.”
“Good, good.”
“I feel like that,” Grace mumbles. “Just like that. Just exactly—exactly like that.”
“About your old mate?”
“Don’t act stupid. You know I’m talking about you.”
Rocky hums, burrowing closer. Grace curls one arm around his carapace. That’s not enough, so he leans over, dropping his head down so his forehead presses against the xenonite.
“My Rocky,” Grace whispers in English.
“My Grace,” Rocky echoes in Eridian. Grace can recognize the note at the start. He will add it when he plays Rocky’s name.
“How long have you called me that?” Grace asks. “Must’ve been a while. I didn’t notice it change.”
I’m gonna propose something: if your combat/ass-kicking sequence can’t fit to a top 40 female-vocalist Banger like “Toxic” or “Mama Mia” or “I Need a Hero” you’re not Doing It Right.
I agree wholeheartedly with every point above but I watched this first with the sound off because I forgot that was an option and what struck me most is how efficient Luke's lightsaber style is. Almost every flourish he makes and all of what, 2 entire spins?, is defensive to better parry blaster fire while nearly every offensive swing he makes is basically a head or chest level kill shot. If I had to make a guess about his character I'd say this vintage twink has probably Seen Some Shit and maybe comes from a background where resources are scarce and help is far away so if you get in a fight you have to end it before it starts or you're dead meat
deeply want a time travel fic where Luke visits the old republic and the Jedi are like “that’s not a dueling style” and luke is like “yea am not doing much dueling tbh”
I have long thought, and continue to think, that Luke's primary lessons from another person on how to use a lightsaber were his fights against Vader, and here it really shows.
As mentioned above, he's efficient and absolutely brutal. That is not at all a criticism, by the way. There's none of the flourishes of prequel Jedi. He's straightforward, and gets it done. He goes for the kill shot every time. He fights a lot like Vader- which makes sense. His primary teachers in the force were Ben (with about two days of instruction) and Yoda (old, doesn't have a lightsaber anymore).
But he had at least two fights with Vader, blade to blade. I can see a lot of Vader's techniques in how he fights here. Between ESB and ROTJ he learned a lot, and I'm fairly certain some of his technique was adapted from how Vader fought in ESB.
Even his use of the Force was efficient- using it to throw boxes at the dark troopers, or push them around, or crushing that one dark trooper. It reminds me of how Vader used the force to throw things at Luke in ESB.
In short, Luke fights like his father, because his father was the only real example of lightsaber combat he had.

There’s nothing like tapping on a teaser for a new run of a musical you’ve never seen or heard, only to get absolutely blasted by a song you recognize from an old fandom animatic 😭
