I know people mean well when they say 'Jews aren't a race, just a religious group!', but in that one sentence you've invalidated the experiences of both non-religious Jews and people who've experienced racially-based antisemitism.

Also it betrays a fundamental misapprehension of race. It treats race as some objective, real category rather than a construct designed to sort people into boxes for the purposes of exploiting them. The idea of race is that some people are biologically suited to oppression. Racial categories don’t really correspond well to ancestry, ethnicity, and has no meaningful, well-defined category bc it’s fake. Race isn’t some real, physiologic difference that people decided was worth oppressing over, it was a justification created ad hoc for the purposes of enabling exploitation and colonization. They used the different features as pretext, the features alone are not what race is. Race is determined by how the system of racial oppression sorts you and it sorts Jews as a race.

The other problem I have with people trying to box Jews into a "religion" category and ignoring ethnic peoplehood is that it then makes it easy to criticize Jews as simply having a belief system they could choose to abandon and then they wouldn't be Jews anymore. And for people who are anti-religion, who believe "religion causes all the world's problems," etc., categorizing Jews as only a religion means if you hate religion it's okay to hate Jews.
