a reason why i love rats is because of how goofy they look. i know a lot of people associate rodents with disease and uncleanliness and thatās why they fear them but i just cannot be scared of an animal that looks like this

Also, if anyone has advice on how to approach having a lone old rat left behind, please let me know
I showed Frodo the body twice (the first time he acted as though he didnāt understand) and he still went around last night frantically searching, Iām not sure if he was searching for Pippin or what, but Iāve never seen him act that way. I left the ramp to the cage down all night so he was able to come and go (and I felt safe doing so because even if he wanted to say hi to me on my bed he doesnāt like to lay up here or stay long) but I think Iām going to maybe start doing that for a while, if not from now on.
If any of you donāt know, I am in a place where I would like to take a break from owning rats. I also currently live with my mom, who has told me not to get anymore.. This kills me because, although Iām ready for a break, I probably would have had a couple new boys to keep Frodo company before Pip had even passed, because I was dreading this situation. I am absolutely not willing to rehome him, because he has his own health issues and I also love him too much, so leaving those suggestions out would be helpful.
Heās out and eating currently which is good, but I can tell heās going to be lonely. I know itās only the first day and he needs to mourn, Iām just worried about him.
Hi! First of all Iām so sorry for the loss of Pippin!Ā
Basically the only thing I can say is, be prepared for him to go downhill quickly or become quite miserable. When Skitty passed away last year, her sister Skunk clearly became very depressed, she slept all the time and wasnāt as active when I got her out either, even when I was spending many hours with her. She perked up as soon as she had a new friend. If you definitely want to keep him, youāre probably going to have to really up the time you spend with him to keep him company.Ā
From the stories I have heard of this happening to other people, some rats may surprise you with how well they do alone after going through the mourning period. At the other end of the scale, you have rats that pass away quite soon afterwards. I know it sounds harsh but you should be prepared incase that does happen.Ā
Depending on how old he is (i.e. if you think he doesnāt have particularly long left), would your mum allow you to get a rat to keep him company until he passes, and then rehome that rat? I have seen people do that, or foster a lone rat from a local rescue. Obviously itās not an amazing solution but if he does seem to continue to suffer it may be best for him.
I know I probably havenāt been particularly helpful, sorry. Try to spend as much time with him as possible and make sure he is doing well, I guess all you can really do is just try to keep him as happy as possible <3Ā Best of luck!Ā
This is absolutely helpful, no worries at all! I have actually heavily considered fostering, it all comes down to where from / how many / for how long / etc. My biggest worry is that I would get attached and it would be an issue once I had to let them go, but that would be easier in my opinion than seeing Frodo suffer alone.
Itās day 1 and heās eating and being quite active, even though heās acting a bit different. Fortunately Iām actually working part time right now so I do have more time than I used to when I was working 47 hours a week.
Frodo actually has quite a few health issues stemming from the good olā URI I have lost so many to already now. Heās currently on medication but we actually had to go to the emergency vet for his respiratory distress literally a week ago. Thatās another thing Iām a bit worried about in regards to bringing in another friend, he has lots of flare-ups and I would feel really bad if he passed that on. At the same time, even though I donāt like to think of it, the other 4 of my boys have a bad track record so far in terms of living long so Iām not expecting Frodo to be around too much longer (even though I obviously wish he would live to 3 years).
Iām definitely willing to consider all options, though. Iām crazy and truly care more for how he is dealing with this than myself!
It might be worth it to put out feelers to see if anyone has a lone older rat; perhaps youād be able to find a rat of similar age in the same situation who needs a buddy, whose keepers arenāt interested in keeping rats in the future.
Thatās actually a great idea. Iām wondering where I would look, though? Iām trying not to jump into anything the next few days to give myself and Frodo time to grieve, but I have looked into fostering via a group in Cincinnati as well as a humane society more where I live (central Ohio). The humane society actually currently has 4 male rats, but theyāre all about 2 months old according to the website. Once I get my bearings I am going to fill out a foster application and see if I can take a couple in for a bit. The other group I messaged the owner on Facebook, she read it but hasnāt gotten back to me yet but I know that theyāre busy and locally run. I checked Craigslist as well and only see rehoming younger rats unfortunately, but I can keep checking.
