Welcome to Palmyra
I'm happy to announce that, together with a roster of great artists, writers, and actors, I've been secretly working on a huge multimedia podcast project. And it's called:
The city of Palmyra has been cordoned off, deemed contaminated. Supposedly, everyone's been evacuated. But we know it's not true. Inside the Exclusion Zone, the Feds, shady companies and hateful militias vie for control of the city, and strange horrors straight out of nightmares lurk around every corner. Meanwhile, those who got left behind are just trying to survive and stick together in this hellscape.
This project will smuggle information out of Palmyra. Apart from the many stories found in our podcast, you'll find recovered footage and documents belonging to different factions and survivors within the city. You can now listen to episode 1 of the podcast!
You may also presave the Kickstarter so you'll be notified when it goes live in a month! We'll be using it to fund our first season and make zines! In the meantime there will be plenty of extra content and cool art coming for you! Follow us at @american-abyss for our first batch of stories! I'm so excited to show more over the coming months! Please dig in and stay tuned.
Here's a sneak peek at some of the horrors I've worked on so far:
Not gonna lie this makes me a bit irritated. Here's the real version of this photo:
Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."
It wasn't a guy being cheeky about sex in an ambiguous, cute way. It was a man stating, in no uncertain terms, that a whole state of the United States considered him a criminal for being homosexual.
When do you go out for a walk around your neighbourhood? Most folks around me opt for the late evening. Me, I usually pick about fifteen minutes after I tried to drive anywhere. Having some incredibly unreliable vehicles means I get to take a great nature walk whenever I want to, and often also when I do not. Making those walks successful, however, takes preparation.
First, there's the obvious task of falling behind on vehicle maintenance. This Valiant, for instance, has had a cooling system problem for the better part of the current century. If I had done literally any investigation during those years, I'd have figured out it was a bad line on the transmission cooler. Now, I've lost all the don't-stop juice from the transmission, and overheated the engine. This gives me a lot to think about on the many miles walk back to my place.
You also want to pick location carefully. Amateurs break down on the Trans-Canada, where there are no continuously-connected bike lanes or even sidewalks for most of its span. Walking on the highway, while dipshits in oncoming Dodge Rams look up from Snapchat only every 10 km or so, is not relaxing in the least. Pick an idyllic nature cruise. Stick to the B-roads. Another bonus: you might come across another car for sale, and you can add it to your hoard while ignoring the problem that got you here in the first place.
Last: make friends. Not only can they pick you up from the side of the road, cutting your walk back from your shattered classic automobile short, but they can often provide valuable walking companions when you offer to drive them anywhere. It's best not to warn them ahead of time, and let it be a surprise that your trunk contains a hiking backpack, a skateboard, a box of granola bars, and sixteen litres of fresh water.

In recent years, moths from the genus Superbia have developed a novel camouflage technique.
Instead of emerging in the darkness of night, they have started coming out of their pupal stage all at once during parades and demonstrations at the end of June. They use bright colours and shimmering displays to blend into crowds and find each other in a space safe from harm.
I'm babysitting a silent auction table and somebody just handed me this thing and said "here, keep it warm"
‘beyond the scope of this paper’ is a dear friend to me. I Am Not Fucking Talking About That
"Look I can stay on track or this paper can be three times as long, your choice."
was thinking about the way airplanes have to withstand a pressure difference of about 0.5 atmospheres, while the ISS of course has to withstand a pressure difference of almost exactly one atmosphere.
And Skylab only had to withstand about 0.33 atmosphere. Weird that it's less than a plane.
Spent a ridiculous amount of time last night obsessively editing my hand written zines in Photoshop to take away any tiny blemishes so they were definitely readable.
Whatever. Understand or don't.

just watched jurassic park and from a meta perspective im thinking sadly about how the behavior the carnivores display is way more indicative (at least to me) of wanting to play and lacking stimulation in their lives than actually wanting to eat the human characters. and they got so so demonized for it
JP dinosaur behavior analysis with a healthy dose of headcanon included from someone who doesnt know much about behavioral science. for funsies
ok so first of all lets start with the t rex. her very first moment is the goat leg ending up on the car, but we can see in the next shot that she is very capable of swallowing the goat whole. so how did that leg get there? given evidence that t. rexes were likely social creatures, i like to imagine that the leg on the car was more “here you go have part of my meal because you’re small” for the humans
next is her communication. i want to look at one specific thing, which was actually the thing that prompted the post
to me, that certainly looks like eye pinning. eye pinning is a behavior in birds that signals high stimulation. here’s what it looks like in a bird
it can be positive or negative, but in this case it’s probably not negative, because there’s nothing forcing the rex to stay there. if she wanted to leave the situation she could hit the bricks
the continual roaring also sort of suggests play behavior to me. there’s not really any sense in making a shitload of noise at your prey (unless you’re trying to scare them out of cover, but we know she doesn’t need to do that because we see she’s strong enough to just break into the car) so, especially because they keep screaming, that reads way more like “im making noises and they’re making noises back ^w^” then it does as trying to intimidate prey for some reason
play behavior also makes sense because we know, canonically, she’s crazy understimulated. alan grant says as much when he mentions that they aren’t feeding her in a way that promotes hunting behavior. the way she noses at the jeep and spins it really just looks more like curious interaction than anything, as well as all the chasing people she does
next, the raptors. their really famous scene is the kitchen, but first let’s establish some facts about them. we know from muldoon and what we’re shown that:
- they’re smart enough to use one of their own as a distraction for flanking maneuvers
- they’re good at problem solving enough to wait until the electric fences are turned off to systematically test them for vulnerabilities
- they’re absurdly fast. “60 mph on open ground” fast
- they are absolutely not in a big enough enclosure
- they’re not fed in a way that promotes hunting behavior either
so when you put all this information together and then look at the kitchen scene, i don’t believe for even one second that the “hide behind the counter” routine is fooling those two raptors for any time at all. that entire sequence of loudly scrambling around the kitchen while something that can keep pace with a cheetah pretends it can’t catch you? yeah that makes WAY more sense as play behavior than it does hunting, especially since we see numerous times that there are many things on the island easier to catch and eat than a bunch of skinny humans (this goes for the rex, too!)
the bit with the noises is also true here. more true, if anything. muldoon tells us the raptors are ambush predators, so why on earth would they get into a hunting ground and then risk scaring their prey off with the loud barking calls? “hi we’re here come out and play” is a much more sensible use of a call loud enough to hurt a human’s ears from across a room in that situation
in conclusion: damnit john your girls are bored as fuck. give them a horse ball or a frozen pumpkin stuffed with meat or something
yeah I mean the play might still end with the humans getting eaten of course
the thing is like men and men really cant be friends because the sex part does always get in the way like thats true. and i mean that like im actually dead serious about that
like have you ever seen two straight men attempt to be friends with each other but the gay sex they arent having is literally preventing them from the transformative healing power of friendship. this is real
i dont even mean this in a "they want to fuck each other" way (although many of them do and will never know it) i mean that like the fact that gay sex is even hypothetically possible between them makes it loom over their friendship like it genuinely haunts them that they could be having it. gay sex is the elephant in the room every time they attempt to be emotionally vulnerable with one another, every time they let a hug linger too long. they cannot address its existence and so there is always something in their way, preventing true connection. and that something is the gay sex. that they are not having. the elephant of gay sex
I remember when I was younger, anytime I watched a movie where the characters have to kill a scary monster/alien, I always thought the act of killing it was intended to be part of the horror. Like there’s this amazing creature that we’ve never seen before, and maybe under different circumstances we could’ve coexisted with it, but it’s trying to attack you and you have to defend yourself, but by destroying it you also destroy the ability to ever understand it and that’s sad and is supposed to make you feel conflicted.
It was not until well into my adulthood that I realized most people do not have complicated feelings about movies where people have to kill a scary alien monster, nor is that necessarily meant to be part of the narrative (unless it very obviously is). They just want the scary thing to die because it’s scary. I don’t have a real conclusion to this I just started thinking about it for some reason.

the set of ships is nonempty and finite
(any reasonable notion of) size induces a total order on the set of equivalence classes of ships of the same size
every nonempty finite total order has a maximum
there exists a ship that is no smaller than any other ship

It's confusing that asexuals are normal. There's a model where sexuality is integrated into our psychology in some holistic or fundamental way and a model where it's basically a discrete module which can be slotted in or out, not loadbearing. And I guess the unremarkable psychology of asexuals implies the latter?
@sequel2heaven said:
given that we all start out as asexual and then change at puberty I always assumed the latter model
i think this is actually counterevidence! puberty is also when you become a more full rounded person!
@onrtrp said:
my intuition is for whatever attribute of the human psyche you can specify you can find a lot of people who are missing that thing but otherwise perfectly normal. which contradicts the "people live in a low-dimensional subspace" thing that the psychometrics guys like but i don't believe in that shit
i think something like this must be true but also like. people are pretty similar. so whats up with that. learned from a neuroscience friend of mine that they rewired a ferrets brain from birth so the sound part went to visual and vice versa and they managed fine. so it might just be the data?
I don't think you need puberty to become a well-rounded person. Lots of historical (Chinese court) eunuchs are very complex figures.
