ok so. i think the viper should have been dorian. for several reasons:
the viper being the pope, of the institution that gets tax money for each slave sold in tevinter, is not very abolitionist of him,
the pope is also notoriously busy and under watch at all times. how can this guy get time off to do crimes? every single minute of his day is probably scheduled and surrounded by bodyguards?
dorian, however!!
he's impulsive and loves duels!! he would start chewing on the walls out of frustration after a while if he had to be in politics. this man is a mad scientist and a menace to society. he needs enrichment in his enclosure.
he would love the idea of having a vigilante outfit and a cool catchphrase.
he can blow off steam and/or hinder his rivals, by putting on a false identity and digging up their scandals, or helping out with whatever non-pamphlet-based slave rebellions are going on.
he could make SUCH an impenetrable alibi for himself, if he figured out how to use time magic for it.
how dare you doubt his patriotism? so many witnesses saw him at the magisterium, while the unknown (extremely handsome and magically gifted, arguably a generational talent) criminal broke into and burnt down the slave ownership records house! btw he has 12 pieces of blackmail material about other magisters now <3 teehee <3
also, this makes it very funny if solas is also running around doing some shady stuff by night as the dread wolf/a generic elven agent. bc if they meet, either it's like:
solas does realize it's dorian, but pretends not to notice. bc he doesn't want to deal with the Resulting Conversation, and dorian would try to maintain his cover if he thinks solas doesn't know, even if he's grinding his teeth about it.
or:
solas actually does not know it's dorian (his surveillance agents say dorian's in his office right now, so... this must be some other guy who just trained at the same magic school?)
either way, dorian can become so insufferable. he can just randomly say things like:
"you know what's terrible? betrayal. especially of friends. who could do that? just take advantage of people's trust? :("
"wow! we did such a great job rescuing that family from slavery! i'm glad that child will have a long and happy life, now. right :) that's what we all want :)"
"i had a friend once who inspired me to try and reform tevinter :) it'll be the work of my whole lifetime, but it's really important and i know we'll succeed :) i'm glad i got started on this path and new people can continue it afterwards. right :)"
"i had a friend who got ghosted in a relationship... such a shameful thing to do to someone... it's really a move made by either the cruel or cowardly :/"
etc. this eventually kills solas by dealing 2 unhealable points of damage to him each time dorian says something passive aggressive.
of course he would. FINALLY some decent conversation!! an intellectual peer! someone who understands his time magic phd jargon and appreciates the nuances of his 19 step mustache care routine 😤✨
