I promised myself I wouldn't subject you all to my obsession with my favorite band every week, so today, you get something different! One of my favorites from my girl Marina de Riva's playlist!
“The feel of her head against his shoulder, of her familiar body, sent a shock of emotion over him. His arms holding her had a tendency to tighten around her.”
Juan pulled out their messenger bag and started to set up on the table as they got settled into the apartment. They fished out a small toolkit with a battery powered dryer. "Hey, Jer? Can you work on disassembling her phone while I get the reader set up?"
"Will do." Jericho sat down at the table and started working on taking apart the phone. "What do you think is going on with her?"
"She was gone a while. Maybe she's anxious about the trip or being back. When you're gone a long time, coming back to this level of noise takes a lot of getting used to." They pulled out a few cables and their own phone to flip through while they waited.
"Hmm… could be. But it seemed like she didn't really want to see us." He frowned over the phone's casing as he pulled it loose.
"Yeah… that was weird. There's wanting to shop solo and there's running head first into a fountain—" they said, trailing off as they flipped through a burst of Nugstagram notifications. They jumped out of their chair, barrelling through the door and back down the stairs, "VERYL!!"
Jericho jumped from his seat and chased after Juan. "Wait, what is it!?"
"VERYL!" Juan was slamming their fists into her door. "Open up! Think I won't go through the window, I've done worse!"
When Jericho caught up, he looked curiously between Juan and Veryl's door before trying a quieter approach. Knocking gently, he called through the door, "Veryl, don't make Juan commit any crimes, just open up."
"Like hell!" She called back. "Do your worst, you get to explain it to… who ever the fuck is in charge around here. Teia!"
"Teia does talent management at the club! The apartment is run by a different management company but that's not important right now! Why didn't you just tell me!"
"Tell you what? What did you find?" Jericho looked at them with anxious confusion.
"Nothing! They found nothing!"
"Are you the reason why I couldn't get into the fan club?! I could get you so many pictures, Veryl!"
A blonde head appeared in the curtain-less window, hands pressed against the glass.
"What?!"
"What?" Jericho repeated.
They held their phone up in front of the window, showing the shots they took at the mall with Jericho framed around the dressing room. "Let me in!"
Veryl disappeared from the window. There was a heavy scraping noise, some shuffling and swearing, the deadbolt and chain unlocking, and finally the door was swinging open.
"Only if you let me explain." Veryl stopped them both with a finger in the air.
"I hope it's for money."
"…What else would it be for?" She slowly stepped aside. "Actually on second thought, maybe not here."
"Why not—" they looked past her into a mostly empty apartment, then rubbed the stress out of their eyes. "I swear no one uses the furniture rental form. Why do we even have it?! No. No, fix that when we get back. Just. Fuck."
"What is going on?" Jericho muttered under his breath.
"She wants to explain so hush."
"Was that what that email was? Huh." Veryl mused as she followed them to the other apartment.
"We have a basic set of furniture that can you order so you don't have to sleep on the floor! You're not sleeping on the floor, are you?" they asked momentarily distracted from their tirade as they headed back up to their own place.
Veryl snorted. "No… you really think I sleep here?"
"Where do you sleep?"
"Well, let me think, there's the professor's, the songwriter's, the painter's, Damas, that mechanic at the garage that lets me crash on his couch. There's a sorority too that's really nice, but I think I'm getting too old. It's getting weird." She ticked off each of them on her fingers. "Elek doesn't seem to mind my presence too much."
"You're sleeping with Elek?!"
Jericho made a choked noise somewhere between a cough and a laugh.
"Not recently, he's had his head up his own ass about something and I don't feel like pulling it out for him."
Jericho glanced at Juan with a small smirk. "Give you three guesses what that's about."
"Okay fine. Everyone's slept with Elek. Except Riley, I guess? I never thought I'd say that. I'm just…" Juan shook their head quickly. "Whatever. If you want photos, we can take photos for you. "
"Thanks, but they can't just be any photos."
"I would know that if you let me into the club," Juan nearly hissed.
"Huh, must have failed the talent portion." Veryl joked. "I don't run the approvals."
"Wait, Ver… you run one of the fan accounts!?" Jericho's mouth dropped open and he blushed furiously once he caught up and the realization sank in.
"Aw… honey. You're so pretty." Veryl patted his cheek as she passed.
He turned to look at Juan incredulously. "When you told me you were pretty sure almost everyone in the club had a little crush on me, I didn't think you were being literal."
"Yeah, everyone thinks you're pretty, but this is about the fan club. Even if Veryl's not running the approvals, she knows who is who I guess has a beef with me because I haven't been able to get in ever! Like it's disproportionately secure."
"I could tell you, but, you know…" she shrugged. "So, before I tell you about my part, I want to strike a deal."
"I can't get you a raise."
"Oh for fu-" Veryl rolled her eyes so hard it looked like caused her an instant headache. "Photos. I want at least five a month."
"I already said I'd get them for you!"
"Cool. You got a pen and paper?"
"Is anyone going to ask if I'm okay with this?" Jericho piped up.
"Juan, I don't know how you get anything done, he's absolutely adorable."
"I don't let him sleep. Anyway, I'm not signing anything, that's crazy. I'll just give you collateral." They turned to Jericho, "We were going to do it anyway. If it goes through her, it's a little more legitimate."
"What? You two dating?"
Jericho nodded. "We were going to tease the fan club with some pictures and lead up to a reveal."
"You can't! No, no, no that'll ruin everything! I had a plan! Dammit!" She paced back and forth for a moment. "You know what, forget the photos, you're right this is better. But you can't just release stuff like this."
"I'm open to suggestions."
Veryl stepped back to assess them both. "Fine. Maybe we can work something into my master plan. I need a laptop and an HDMI cable, I am not casting to a screen, it lags."
She pulled out a thumbdrive from her back pocket, and started mumbling to herself again.
They shrugged and connected up their laptop and slid it over. "Come on, movie star, let's see what her plan is."
Veryl hit the lights and launched into a powerpoint that was far too elaborate.
"We will get into the master plan, but first… a complete history." She clicked through the summary pages. "The total time for this presentation is two hours. So, lock in, nerds."
Juan's eyes sparkled and they clapped lightly with soft 'Ooohs.'
Jericho looked between Veryl, the screen, and then settled on Juan. "A presentation like this, you should make her an honorary de Riva."
"Please save all comments until after the presentation is over, thank you!" She clicked to the next slide. "So it all started with this video of Jericho tending bar…"
It really did cover everything. Every post, the reason why it was posted, the response, how it affected the page (eventually pages, some of which have yet to found), top comments, feedback, projections, multiple animated graphs and finally, comparisons.
"You must be asking yourself, what's the point? Why go through all of this trouble?"
Juan raised their hand. "Is it because he's hot?"
"What adjectives am I allowed?" She looked down over a pair of glasses she'd picked up at some point.
"It's more of a yes or no question but I guess it's up to you," they said looking at Jericho.
"I'm a bartender in a strip club." Jericho shrugged. "I've heard it all."
"Are his numbers better than Chance's? Can you do mine?"
Veryl clicked through a few slides as animations danced too quickly across the screen, "I actually have a full list here. But I'm glad you brought this up, because my goal…" She clicked a few more times, and there was a crown lowered to the top of a grainy picture of Jericho's headshot that hung in the club. "Is to make Jer the number one most followed member of the Snake Pit, nay, the whole of Antivan stripperdom. That's a little more nuanced than, "yes or no", wouldn't you say?"
"Oh, that's so ambitous! But how? Riley's the draw, then Glad, and Turvi's the specialty act."
"Relatability. Tangibility. Access." She had a slide for this one too. "Everyone talks to Jericho, everyone knows Jericho. If people aren't looking at the stage, they're asking him to make a drink. Do you know how easy it is to get lost and feel out of place in a club like that? He's got this magic little bubble of untapped potential right there in the corner of the club, where people feel seen and heard. Not mention he's got all of those slick bottle tricks that give them a private show of their own."
Jericho blushed and raised his hand before asking a question. "They don't know I nearly burned down the club, do they?"
"We ran a poll, and no, they tend to think very highly of you." She patted around on her person. "Right. Phone's busted. I don't think they really ever decided after arguing about it for about a week."
"It's actually a really good way to pull in business for people who generally would be too intimidated to go to a stripclub on their own," Juan said, too thoughtfully. "Are they going to flip out if they find out he's dating?"
"Depends on which camp you ask. Since that shitty photo got dropped of you two canoodling from a distance, I've been trying to run interference. I was planning to roll it out in stages, make it easier, and less… death-threaty."
"Death threats!?" Jericho squeaked.
"It's fine. We're not at the mall anymore and the club's shut down so no one actually knows where we are. Her phone will dry out in a few hours, and we can get this cleaned up."
"Really, I've already done this a couple of times before. They get a little… protective of you, so they've all agreed no one is allowed to get too close. Though they're all for you finding someone. The real problem lies in who they think you're dating."
He frowned. "If they have a problem with Juan…"
"Uh… so, no… they don't." Veryl looked a bit sheepish. "Juan's not even on the list."
"What!? That can't be right." He shook his head and reached for Juan's hand.
"It's fine. It's not like we're obvious during club hours. Besides, it's not like any of the other dancers are on there, right?"
"… there's a reason I need to get my phone back."
"I mean, even if I'm not n the running, I'm eligible, right?"
"I think you're a wild card, if that helps? Like a name they throw out for hypotheticals. My name is a wild card too, but like, could you even imagine." She laughed outright.
"Wait, so neither of us are in the bracket?! That's just rude."
"Well, who is in the running?" Jericho raised a brow.
"Last I checked, so before you two decided to ruin everything…" Veryl thought for a moment. "It was Zalan… Illene… and ah! Right! Viago, which personally, I don't really get, but they seem to think you have a thing for De Rivas. Weird you didn't make the list."
"It's so rude!"
"Well, Zalan makes sense, we've been friends for a long time. And Ilene always hangs out at the bar. But Viago!?" Jericho looked mildly horrified at the notion.
"Seems like a lot of facial hair at one time." She made a face. "Like velcro."
Jericho wrinkled his nose. "Ugh, yeah. No thank you."
"Those are also just the sane options… I think a baby nug made the list."
"Aww! Is there a picture?"
"Ew, no. That's a bad thing." Veryl made another face. "Maker, Viago is better than… that."
"There's always some kind of small animal, but nugs? I guess." They sighed. "So if we reveal without even being a consideration, it'll break the bracket and the group will freak out."
Veryl sighed and clicked off the presentation before sliding… were those different glasses than the ones from before? "There's something to be said for ragebaiting people into interacting, but I'd rather keep things contained. They're nice, for the most part, and I'd like to keep it that way."
"We only have until takeoff then, unless they're not going to have anyone in Rivain. I'm not giving up matching outfits and a waterfall date just for an internet bracket."
Blushing slightly, Jericho turned to Juan with a soft smile and squeezed their hand.
They smiled back. "Aww, I forgot. This really is your first go around with this. How are you doing?"
"I'm alright. Happy even. This is… more fun than I expected," he chuckled. "Though now I'm thinking more about the dates we're planning for Rivain."
"It'll probably be fine. There might be a couple people who show up but most of your fans are local here. Our dates should be okay."
Jericho nodded, but looked thoughtful. "I'm kind of surprised no one's spotted us at brunch."
"At least we know it's none of the wait staff…"
He laughed. "Yeah… they probably all hate us. Just a little."
"Um yeah, not all of them." Veryl cleared her throat. "Anyway! I'll send you a list of shots I want, and you can just send me anything you think would look good on the grid, I'll let you know if it works."
"We should get them done by tomorrow night," they said with a nod. "And your phone repaired in a couple hours."
Her shoulders dropped with relief, "oh thank fuck. Maybe I can stop them from getting the server banned."
"Was that a concern?" Jericho asked.
"Nope!" She smiled broadly. "I'll see you two later, I'm gonna go check in with… the other moderator."
"Wait!" Jericho's eyes went wide. "Who's the other moderator?
"Wouldn't you like to know, Bar boy." She winked and gave a salute. "See ya!"
And just like that, she disappeared. Again.
Juan blinked, then turned to Jericho. "Did… she just wink and run out of here?"
"I think so," dumbfounded, he looked at Juan. "She didn't even wait for her phone."

I wrote a tiny little fic for @therivercrow about Juan breaking into Alana's room to steal the dresses they get from Teia almost a whole ass year ago for Rook Fest (or around then). Since then I've wanted to do the Mr and Mrs Smith poster (the joke being they're wearing each other's clothes and also are both enbys). And after taking cracks at it more than a half dozen times over the year I FINALLY FINISHED IT.
I know we talk a lot about the literacy crisis and the horrible anti-intellectualism happening rn but I think we need to talk more about how much of an entitlement complex the stupidest among us have developed

Juan and Jericho run into Veryl at the mall. Run her down in the mall. Something like that. Juan goes full Karen on some mall cops. The fact no one's been banned from anywhere is a miracle.
written with @sandcastlekings and @hedwigoprah | Immediately follows Jericholics Anonymous and Vacation Fit
Juan walked out of the apparel shop, flipping through the various photos they took. Gracefully, they were letting Jericho carry the bags. They were giggling to themself, noting which photos were too boring for the feed and which ones they wanted to keep to themself. "You know when we're traveling, I'll need you to take these kinds of photos for my feed too."
Smiling warmly, Jericho leaned over to take a peek at the pictures on Juan's phone. "You know I'll be happy to. Like having your own personal photographer."
"And we'd have to do the reveal before takeoff. Very few ways to explain going to the airport with the same shirt. Now, your fans like those almost out of frame, kind of coy looks that you give. I'm pretty sure that's their favorite."
"Wait, which are the coy looks?" He laughed. "Oh, we'll have to do one in the matching shirts sometime."
"They're comfortable enough, we can just wear them on the plane to Rivain. It'll be a fun surprise for the guys." Juan finally looked up from their phone, scanning the various store fronts for their next stop. Their eyes stopped on a taller figure with blonde hair a decent way ahead. They waved emphatically, "Veryl! I think Veryl's here. She must be shopping for the trip too."
Jericho looked up and waved as well, trying to catch her attention, but she hadn't seemed to notice them. "Should we go say hi?"
They watched as she seemed to peek up then shuffle behind a plant, still a bit too tall to be out of sight. "Huh… Maybe she's taking a call? We should say hi anyway."
Moving a little closer, Jericho waved again and called, "Veryl?"
"Shit, fuck, ow." Veryl's legs tangled with that of a chair sitting with one of the cafe tables. She then promptly tried to pretend that she hadn't gained her seat so clumsily, propping her elbow on the table and resting her chin on her hand.
"Hi, hello," she said with an awkward wave.
Jericho and Juan approached the table and exchanged a glance. "Are you alright?" Jericho asked her.
The large sunglasses covered most of her face but her eyebrows shot up beyond them. "Yep. Fine. What brings you two to this side of town?"
Juan looked at Jericho first then up at her. "Shopping for the trip? What are you doing here?"
"Oh you know, same." She fluttered her hands about. "Gotta have clothes so I can take them off. Cause we're strippers. And that's what strippers do. Soooo… I'm gonna go find clothes… to take off. Bye."
"Wait…" Jericho started, but Veryl had already scurried away. He turned to Juan with a puzzled look. "That was weird? Right?"
"That was really weird…" Immediately, Juan took off after her. "Veryl!"
Her gait increased quickly, and she ducked into the closest store.
"Veryl!" They dove into the store, eyes snapping in all directions.
Jericho followed behind, more methodically checking behind clothing racks and displays tall enough to hide her frame.
When she was sure they were far enough into the store, Veryl dashed out from her hiding place amongst the mannequins in the window and escaped.
"Why is she being like this?!" Juan yelped, dashing after her, nearly grazing Jericho in the process.
"I don't know!" Jericho did his best to keep pace with Juan. "I know she's been gone for awhile, but I don't think she was quite this… flighty? before!"
There was a loud splash toward the center of the mall, and a large crowd started to gather around the large fountain located there. There were calls for security and various noises of alarm.
By the time they arrived at the large fountain in the center of the mall, the Mall Cops were already there with a small scene starting to form. Juan's face twisted and they stormed up to them, "Hey! Get away from her!"
They yelled just loud enough to draw the security guard's attention. Their accent shifted and they tore into them, yelling about things like lawyers and safety.
While Juan had their attention, Jericho approached the fountain and reached out to help Veryl back out.
Instead of falling back into the water to completely submerge herself in her humiliation, she clasped Jericho's hand and let him haul her out. Clothes dripping she searched for her phone in her bag, and found it had sacrificed itself in her stead.
"Fucking fuck." Was all she had to say as she stared at her sunken device. Then she was diving back into the water.
Phone retrieved, she tried to turn it on. When that worked and then didn't work at all, she slammed it against her palm a few times.
"It's gonna go up in flames. They're all gonna kill each other. Oh, and the pictures, those are gone. Maker, fuck what am I gonna do now."
She kept mumbling to herself, standing there looking like a soggy scarecrow.
Juan finally got the security guard to retreat and headed back to the other two. "Okay? Okay. We need to go. I got him to check some stuff but I don't want to be around when he comes back. Veryl, you okay? You look… rough."
"I just caused a social media firestorm," Veryl sighed and got out of fountain again. "But it'll be fine. I owe you one for covering my ass."
"I probably got one more strike here," they shrugged. "Come on, let's get you clothes. I can fix your phone. Or at least dry it out and pull your data off."
"Um!" Veryl chirped and clutched at her phone. "That's okay! I'll just get a new one!"
Jericho looked between Veryl and her soggy phone. "It's really not that hard to fix. I helped Glad with his electronics after they were water damaged."
"We still have all that stuff at your place, right? And I have some stuff at the office to read it if you pull out the drive. Once everything's dry, it shouldn't take more than an hour."
"Yeah! It's all still there." He smiled at Veryl. "It will be good as new when we're done with it."
"Uh…" She looked around, clearly looking for another escape route but found only a crowd of onlookers that hadn't yet dispersed.
Shoulders drooping, she muttered a simple, "…fine", and handed over her phone.
Juan wrapped the phone in one of the shirts they had picked up. "Let's get out of here before we end up back on the feed. Maybe we should head back to the apartments first so Veryl can get something dry."
"Good idea. And maybe she can tell us what kind of chaos she's caused on the way," Jericho grinned.
Veryl laughed nervously but otherwise remained silent.
Juan walked with Jericho and Veryl back, rattling off the logistics again, trying to reassure that costumes would be handled before the leave. They continued, "But if you want anything special for your off days, that's on you. Unless you want help picking stuff. We can get you options. So! Do you want us to wait while you get changed or… you know what? We can probably dry out your phone upstairs. Is there a model you like, just in case you have to replace it."
"Uh, yeah, no, I don't really care. Long as it works." She frowned. "You… you can't get into it without my passcode, right? Like, you don't need to?"
"I mean, we'll at least need to turn it on and make sure it's working. But we're not going to read your texts or anything," Jericho assured.
"Only if you remembered to encrypt it. If you didn't, it should be pretty easy to at least save your photos and any notes or docs you have saved on it." Then they looked up. "Or is just my phone like that?"
"That sounds like a de Riva thing," Jericho laughed.
"I'm busy!" Juan whined.
"You're cute," Jericho grinned, giving their hand a quick squeeze.
Veryl looked back and forth between them, a sour look on her face.
"I'll be upstairs soon. I just gotta find some clothes." She opened the door and escaped inside her apartment.
Juan looked at Jericho and shrugged before heading upstairs. "She probably needs a minute. That was chaotic."
GUESS WHAT. Random driveby reverse strawberrying. 🍓
I'm always so impressed how you keep challenging yourself creatively even though it feels hard and you sometimes express that you feel like giving up!! But you never do! Thats amazing!! And it's going so well!
I always enjoy seeing you on my dash and the shenanigans you and jericho are up to with your core group of friends, and it always makes me happy to see you having fun. You deserve so many good things!! Also, what you've posted of your photography is fantastic! Always a fun treat to see. 💖
So I've had this sitting in my inbox for like 24 hours now, because I keep coming back to it going "omg this is so nice how do I reply?" and staring at it for a bit.
But anyway! Thank you!! So much!! This is lovely and absolutely made my day. I'm sort of speechless and a bit of mess and kind of look like this right now
Seriously, thank you so much. You are amazing friend, and I hope things with you and BDB are fantastic! 💕
