I wrote this mini fic based on this post because it was so cute and it made me laugh.

That one season before Barney and Robin get together, they showed how close they were as friends. Being supportive, bickering like an old married couple, knowing about each other’s small habits, etc.

Whatever it was, Eddie hadn’t had a good night's sleep in that house yet.

But what woke him up that night wasn’t the harsh light or the uncomfortable mattress. It was the vibration of his phone.

He let out a sleepy groan and opened one eye to look at the digital clock.

His heart immediately hammered in his chest and he reached for his phone on the nightstand. When someone called at this time of night, it was never good news.

Eddie’s breath hitched in his chest and he shot upright in bed, his vision swimming from the sudden movement. Buck is hurt. Was the first thing that came to his mind. It was always Buck who called with the news from the 118. He was always the first one to tell Eddie about what Hen and Chimney bickered about that day or what Bobby did on a call when a cat was in a tree. It was never not Buck.

But it was the first time it felt like a goodbye.

“Alright, buddy,” Buck said, zipping up Theo’s jacket. “You ready?”

“Yeah!” Theo hopped as he held his dinosaur plushie close to his chest.

Buck grabbed his backpack and helped Theo put it on. “You excited to see granny?”

“Yeah. She said she makes me cookies. Like you do!” Theo nodded.

Buck didn’t say anything. He just brushed the boy’s hair back from his eyes and smiled. “I’m sure they’ll be much better.”

But his smile fluttered when he heard the knock on the door.

“I’ll get it,” Eddie said from the kitchen, wiping his hands with a dish towel.

Buck stood up and guided Theo out of the room that used to be the guest bedroom, but now it belonged to Theo. Buck didn’t know if he could change it back to what it used to be.

“Okay, that must be Diedra,” he murmured under his breath more to himself than to Theo.
