As someone who like and even idealised him (mostly as a character) and other peoples of 1800s, but hate all of fucking imperialistic war shit, which government of my own country makes in nowadays for two years, I can say, that we need this conversation. But not ready to it.
When I catch myself on this mental dissonance (sorry, English isn’t my mothertongue) I think about mental differences between us and generations of peoples in 1800’s. About their social lifts, education, monarchy, religion matter, childhood, stereotypes, ways to dialogue between peoples of different cultures and between governments of different countries, about violence and mortality under golden robes, where human life is valueless. And about all of this things in our world. We have much more knowledges about other cultures, we live in close connection with whole world and use to respect it (even if someone ugly on TV tell us to hate each other). You can feel the difference in perception even when you talk about other culture stuff with your parents or grandparents which grew up without internet (in Eastern Europe they has strong stereotypes, in fact).
Our new knowledges, fears (in our XX century history books we can see more horrible thinks, which peoples of 1800s can’t even imagine) values let us reflect mistakes of their past and learn, think about everything by other way. We have strong understanding, that governments should serve to citizens, they see the greatest honor to die or kill for their king or their queen. And we know that there is too many different ways to dialogue and no way to justify someone, who start the war in present.
But I don’t think that people of other century with other cultural background can be judged by nowadays measures, he can’t feel like disease something, which his generation called normal or even honorary.
