Truly one of the oddest feelings is reading a fic that is so out of character but the writing and plot is so compelling. Like yeah I came here for the characters but yeah you know what I will read your original novel with the serial numbers plastered on

“If you deny any affinity with another person or kind of person, if you declare it to be wholly different from yourself—as men have done to women, and class has done to class, and nation has done to nation—you may hate it, or deify it, but in either case you have denied its spiritual equality, and its human reality. You have made it into a thing, to which the only possible relationship is a power relationship. And thus you have fatally impoverished your own reality.” Ursula K. Le Guin "American SF and The Other" in Science-Fiction Studies 7, 1975.
god smut is so hard to write.
first you gotta do the build up and then the actual fucking and the fucking is pretty easy but you never know how long the fucking should last, and eventually you're like "okay I'm tired of this" so the characters cum, but you're not done yet because you can't just end it at "he fucking nutted everywhere" you gotta keep going, and the characters have to chat a little or cry or think about how horrible they are or something and then you kinda don't know when to end that either so now you're 2k words in and you might have put too much self hatred and not enough sucking dick. so you wrap it up, and think well it's done now.
or sometimes you have it all perfect in your mind and you knock the whole thing out in 2 to 3 hours.
my petty gripe about anachronism in historical/fantasy/spec-fic worlds is attraction language.
We’ve all heard the “should you use modern queer labels or not” argument but honestly even when people go “true, they wouldn’t use the labels ‘aromantic’ or ‘asexual,’” so often the characters describe their experiences as “I never felt romantic attraction” or “I don’t feel attracted to anyone” in ways that makes me go. You are stilllllll thinking about this in an extraordinarily modern online way. That 19th century steampunk detective man will NOT be angsting about having never felt romantic attraction, he would be angsting about being unable to feel moved by the beauty or charm of a woman, or something. And I do think that “attractiveness” language is different from the identity-level idea of experiencing attraction—Sherlock Holmes does not talk about not experiencing attraction, but when Watson says “What a very attractive woman!” Holmes responds “Is she? I did not observe.” (And then Watson calls him an inhuman automaton and calculating-machine and Holmes calls Watson’s judgement biased). Never swayed by the attractiveness of a man or woman, never desirous of marriage, never charmed by the delights of love, all of these feel like some of the variety of ways that someone in this milieu might describe an ace- or aro-spectrum identity more than “never felt attraction” does. Mostly because, like the terms for aromantic and asexual themselves, nailing down an exclusively attraction-based definition of a-spec identities is a relatively new and extremely post-AVEN thing. And yet in fiction everybody knows to articulate their experience as feeling sexual/romantic attraction. And I always want to go nooo how would THIS character think about it?? Not how you think this character SHOULD think about it, how would THIS person in THIS context articulate their feelings?

one of the best parts of making up increasingly wild and specific aus with a friend is sending them posts like "this is sooo blorbo in torture chamber au number 15" and they reply back like "YESSS btw have i told you about my latest idea for how to torture them even more" and you get to enjoy a little snack and kick your feet with glee

"You know what's harder than Getting Better? Living Like That" is just the thesis for my whole shit going on right now honestly. You know what's harder than doing my physical therapy? Hurting All The Time. You know what's harder than addressing my gender dysphoria? Hurting All The Time
I'm Doing The Hard Thing and it's *easier* than how I was living before. If you make yourself feel better you will have more energy to spend on Getting Better. Nice inch nails - the upward spiral. Crawl out of your grave Thursday
I have finally seen an episode of All Creatures Great and Small and boy howdy. You have really pulled off the Siegfried look!!!!
Thank you, this is a deliberate affectation for some of my outfits, so I never mind the comparison here.
The show was the kick in the butt I needed to start dialing in the 1940s silhouette - I was previously half-assing it with mostly modern pieces, but never quite satisfied. I was hesitant to commit to high waisted trousers with wide legs and pleats, because modern cut pleated trousers look *awful* on me. But the vintage style high waist + short waistcoat make a huge difference! *And* it all lessens my hips dysphoria!
The other style coincidence is my hair and beard have been similar to his since years before the show, so the fashion inspiration really has been to 1) commit to the silhouette I love and 2) try out some new colors I was previously avoiding because I didn't think they would look good on me (reds and golds).
Siegfried is a good example of how I roll fandom fixations into my overall style. One of my outfits for funsies is ~90% screen-accurate, but my closet has much more variety. My study is very evocative of his with lots of All Creatures easter eggs, but my fingerprints are nonetheless all over the place.
I think that fandom tributes and shrines are lots of fun, but also feel like you need to leave room for *yourself*.
I’m so sorry that low waisted pants got both “man cut” and “woman cut” pants.
My first job (2008) was at a Men’s Wearhouse (formal/business dress clothing store) and the amount of guys who would INSIST on yanking their pants down until they looked like saggy diapers was baffling.
Hoist that back up!
Thanks for hopefully convincing many many gents out there to go for the high waist. It looks/fits/feels better, I promise.
More high-waisted propaganda:
when you wear them with suspenders (best method imo), that means the waistband can be much looser, which is very comfortable + forgiving if you have regular weight fluctuations that keep you between sizes
high-waisted dress trousers tend to have other cool details, such as a fishtail back or side waistband adjusters; more casual shorts and trousers could have a ghurka waistband; and even denim can have neat details
your ass crack will be completely covered when you bend down
your leggies will look longer and more elegant
you have more room in the crotch and pockets
wide legs are cooler in the heat
imo, it's a Look that is great for a wide variety of body types
High-waisted doesn't have to mean 1940s. I've seen "90s cut" jeans return (Old Navy has a bunch), classic workwear features high-waisted denim (Bronson is a budget choice here), and brands like Spier & Mackay have a modern take on them, if you prefer a slimmer leg.
Once you commit, though, you'll likely find that sweaters and waistcoats are out of balance (they need to land several inches higher, just barely covering your waistband). But it's worth replacing these garments as well, to get everything in harmony.
