RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS
you left weeks ago. finally, a way back home was found. you took the chance; not knowing if you'll ever get it again. riddle didn't cry in the moment, but he wasn't surprised when he started to sob in trey's arms afterward.
everything in heartslabyul stayed the same. rules were enforced, unbirthday parties happened on time, everything was in order. you just weren't there to see it.
ace doesn't tick him off as much, deuce thinks before he acts, cater pretends everything's okay and trey continues his role as vice housewardenâkeeping riddle in check more often now that you're gone.
he doesn't realize how harsh he's been again, not worse, but just in pain. he distracted himself from the thought of you, no breaks, no what ifs.
expect at night.
the dorm is quiet, students are asleepâbut riddle's wide awake. sometimes, which became an unhealthy habit, he finds himself sitting at the small garden table where you used to drink tea together. in this scenario, it's early morning. classes don't start for a few more hours but here riddle isâstating at the tea cups set across from reach other over the white cloth.
the one at the end of him is still hot, untouched and prepped with your preference. he sips his tea, hands shaking slightly and his eyes shut closed to keep himself from tearing up.
it's not working.
"...housewarden," trey's voice echos softly, it's low and gentle. riddle stiffens, eyes open with pricks of tears threatening to fall. he clears his throat, sets his tea up down and straightens his back.
he stares at the untouched tea cup across from him, a hand comes up to his side to gesture trey to sit down.
"it would be improper to waste prepared tea." his voice is barely a whisper. trey sits where you used to, sipping the tea as riddle let's a tear slip.
LEONA KINGSCHOLAR
no one bats an eye when leona acts the same as alwaysâstraight face, skips class and continues his life like nothing happened. you left weeks ago...so why is he still feeling like you're still here. he tries to push you in the back of his mind, but he seems to find things that remind him of you.
he doesn't cry, not for a while. he refuses to cry in front of others, he just acts like everything is normal. except, he's quieter. he doesn't snap as quick, he continues to skip classes and he stays in his room.
but he has trouble sleeping, which is a shock to almost everyone in the dorm. ruggie doesn't comment, he just continues to follow leona's ordersânothing they've become less demanding and more as if he's trying to cover up his emotions by having ruggie do the regular.
at least that hasn't changed.
one afternoon, he's skipping class again. in his head he can already hear your whining as he drags you with himâsaying he needs to stop skipping classes if he wants to graduate this year. what's the point of graduation if your not even here with him to do so?
he dozes off, it's only been three minutes but he swears he can feel your presence beside him. head leaning against his chest and staring up at him with that stupid smile he misses seeing. he you say you have to get to your next class and you can't skip with him.
"five more minutes, herbivore..."
the silence answers him. painfully obvious. he feels stupid. kissing his teeth he leans up, tail flicking in irritation as he looks around the empty garden.
he rubs a hand over his face, realizing he's standing alone with no nagging voice, no happy laughter, no you. the next few days, ruggie notices leona more in space. the hyena finds him staring at the path leading into the garden one evening.
"waiting for someone, boss?"
leona flicks his tail.
"tch, don't be stupid."
AZUL ASHENGROTTO
everything is fine. everything has to be fine. he has to be fine. he has a business to run and a graduation to reach. time is money. he doesn't have to get distracted about what has already been done and can't be undone.
azul is going at his usualâexpanding contracts, making deals with poor souls who don't know any better, growing his reputation.
he should feel satisfied.
but a pair of twins noticed their boss has been overworking himself a lot latelyâjade makes him tea, it's left cold on his desk. floyd isn't sure what to do exactly, but he knows azul isn't acting as he regularly does.
the mostro lounge is quiet and dark, jade steps silently through the darkness. he preps azul a cup of tea, noticing a glass on the table. it was filled with your favorite drink, jade knows this because azul made sure to add it to the menu.
humming softly, jade discards the tea he was going to make for azul and ended up remaking your favorite drink for him. taking it to the boss soon after.
jade finds him alone in the vip lounge after closing the restaurant. he sees his boss holding a contract in his hands, unsigned and in perfect condition.
an empty line stares back at him as azul takes his glasses off and places them in the table before him. "you never signed your own name," jade observes, a hand behind his back as he leans over awaiting a response.
azul simply folds the controls back into a roll gently, turning in his chair he faces the eel.
"of course not," he whispers, "a contract requires both parties to sign, and one of them is gone." he lets a silent tear fall down his cheek as the room falls into silence.
KALIM AL-ASIM
kalim keeps smiling, keeps the parties going and he told himself you were happy! he cried when you left, holding you tight because this may be the last he'll ever cry in your arms again. even if the parties kept going, the thought of you in his mind was louder.
you loved his parties, you always were his plus one and he always took you despite if you were sad. he claims it will lift your spirits, so why isn't it working for him?
kalim cries during the week and jamil at his side, he's comfort the housewarden like this before, but he understands how different this is. you brought joy and happiness into kalim's lifeâhe cries about why you had to leave.
but both of them understand.
kalim is just devastated. he misses you, and he's not scared to show it. ramshackle isn't the same, he misses the memories he made with you there.
jamil finds kalim cuddling a scarf you left behind in scarabia, running his cheek against the fabric to smell the perfume that faintly clung to it. jamil doesn't say anything, but he offers to clean it. not wanting it to smell due to the lack of care.
it takes a while for kalim to agree, but once your smell starts to fade he reluctantly hands the scarf to his friend.
the housewarden asks if jamil could make your favorite for dinner tonight and he agreed. making sure there's leftovers. kalim eats every last bite, making sure nothing goes to waste and encourages the rest of the dorm to eat it as well. kalim will make sure he never forgets about you, he could never!
and if he needs to cry again, jamil hands him the scarf and sits at his side.
VIL SCHOENHEIT
continues his modeling, keeping up his beauty and filming. perfection does not pause at heartbreak, but it can cause heavy bumps. he refuses to let grief change his appearance.
life at pomefiore stays the sameâschedules, the beauty routines, keeping students in check. anyone watching would say vil is as flawless as ever.
but rook notices slight changes, the cracks in the foundation.
vil stares longer at his reflection, not admiring himself. just...staring. he didn't think a mirror could hurt him so much. it took away the one thing he thought he couldn't continue life without.
one evening after a long day, vil sits at is vanityâcleaning his face from makeup. mid-swipe something catches the corner of his eye.
a bottle of a nail polish you once gave him with a happy smile and said the color would look beautiful on him. he merely chuckles, taking the polish and states. of course it would, have you met me, my dear?
it's small, nothing he would have noticed if ur didn't hold significance to his heart. you never took it back despite being used by you multiple times. he takes the bottle, he remembers the way you accidentally smudged it against his skin with that bubbly laughter if yours.
the housewarden continues to stare until a voice rings through the silence; "roi du poison, that color would look magnifique on you!" rook's voice is soft and grounding, standing by the frame of the door vil simply hums.
his gaze returns to his mirror as he stares back at his reflection, a snippet of you behind him with a happy smile plays in his mind. "she had remarkable taste," rook smiles.
vil chuckles, "of course she did," he puts the bottle back down. "she was going to carry the schoenheit last name."
since then vil wears the nail polish until it runs out, which is just like his love for you, it will take a while for it to run out.
IDIA SHROUD
didn't try to stop you, but told himself if there were any different scenarios where you stayed. but he's only a genius, not a wizard. after you leave, the ignihyde dorm is quiet. his room becomes more of a cave than a space. door stays closed, screen glows constantly in the darkness.
ortho can tell idia is cracking. he doesn't know how much longer he stays watching his brother keep himself isolated.
idia scrolls through your messages like it's a job, endless texts and memes send tears to his eyes. dumb jokes, late-nignt game rambling, your teasing and his awkward ass sending cat memes just to see the heart you send when you like his message.
you went offline weeks ago.
it never went green again. you are never active, and your icon stays the same.
he wishes you stayed, he wished you didn't have to leave him. but he understands why you leftâthis wasn't your world. but you were his. he just didn't know how to express it. he wished he said more when you were still here, he thought he had more time.
ortho catches him one evening, "...brother?" his voice was soft and genuine. idia yelps, phone flies under his pillow and panics. "iâi wasn't doing anything weird, just data.. archiving, totally normal!!"
"you miss her."
it was a simple assumption, but they both knew it was true. idia's hair swishes as hia lips quiver. he doesn't say anything, he doesn't have to. he's bad at hiding stuff from his brother, who simply gives the housewardens a hug and even if he starts to cry, ortho doesn't leave his side.
idia opens the co-op game him and you used to play a few days later, the lobby empty with only his character. the empty slot reflects in his eyes, his hood covers his eyes.
"you've been afk for too long..." he mummers, finger hovering over the start button.
but he doesn't click it. he just lets a tear slip.
"i miss you," with a soft whisper, he turns off the loading screen and never opens it again.
MALLEUS DRACONIA
the weather has been nuts, no one would ever get used to it. strong winds, heavy thunder during storms and lightning striking the sky. if the campus was scared of him beforehand, they are petrified now that you're gone.
you were the only one who wasn't scared to talk to him, remembering your first interaction like it was yesterday. "hornton!" you cheered every time giving him a happy smile. he didn't think he'd miss it this much.
lilia watches him carefully, the way he gets quieter, his eyes drop and he leaves the table early. it's even harder to find him now, sebek goes bonkers. silver tries to calm him down, and lilia follows the dragon heir.
he walks laps around the ramshackle dorm, when he has the heart, he steps inside. sometimes he just stands there, sometimes he explores. in this case, lilia finds him at the gate. he flutters down to his side, hands behind his back as he hair swishes.
"you've been coming down here a lot, young master." he states simply, leaning over to see the dragons face. it's unreadable. arms crossed and his eyes stare at the dorm before him.
the windows are dark, dust started to gather at the porch area and the hedges started to overgrow without care. it already looks like it was before you got here, abandoned. he takes doesn't teleport, he takes his time to look at the area with lilia floating close behind.
not speaking, just observing and listening.
they reach the dusty porch, the door and dirty windows. "i would always find her on these steps, i've gotten used to seeing her...never wondered how i would feel when she left."
lilia suddenly spoke up, "how do you feel?"
"...she is gone...i cannot fathom a thought what too feel"
malleus traces a gloved finger across the railing, remembering the conversations he and you had here. movies, trivia, his history and your favorite hobbies. things that would mean nothing to the prince of briar valleyâbut meant the world to malleus.
"you loved her."
malleus closes his eyes.
"yes..."
the wind stirs between the two faes, lilia hums softly. "then she is never gone." malleus opened his eyes at lilia's statement, horns turn with him as he stares at the fae. "she would not want you trapped in sorrow,"
"perhaps..."
the dragon prince turns his attention back at the door of ramshackle, his expression softens. "still," lilia looks up, a shimmer of moon light reflects his eyes.
malleus resumes, voice hopeful. "if she were to walk through the door right now, i believe i will never have to feel sorrow again."
end notes; gah damn malleus' i love you. i rushed through this, i hate being sick

âI donât understand how he is the fairest one of all,â Vil said with a scowl, pacing back and forth across the plush carpet of his bedroom floor. You sat on the edge of his bed, watching as he did so, head slightly tilted and gaze soft with admiration. He suddenly stopped, turning to you, and lamented.
âNeige is a subpar actor, a deplorable singer, his dancing is atrocious, and he always has an utterly baffling blank look on his face. How is he qualified to take the Fair Queenâs role as fairest? He is simply unfit to play the part.â
He wasnât angry, you knew, but instead⌠distressed. Not in a truly harmful way, but in the way an unpreened bird might be. He was unintentionally seeking reassurance, and you were not about to let your beloved queen fall to his knees without support.
âNeige is just⌠soft.â Vilâs head snapped to you at the sound of your voice, retort dying on his tongue and scowl relaxing as he processed the thoughtful, formulating expression you had.
âYouâre⌠ethereal.â Your eyes met his, and he waited for you to continue. The adoration and reverence in your tone and gaze kept him quiet. âIt feels like if I approach you, if I stare too long, Iâm going to break an artifact. People feel like they can talk to Neige. Theyâre scared to talk to you, because they donât feel worthy to.â You paused, letting your words sink in as you formulated your final thought.

being transported to another world was already terrifying. being transported to another world filled with magic, monsters, and students who all seemed far more confident than you somehow made it worse. from the moment you arrived at nrc, words became your greatest enemy. every introduction turned into a struggle. every sentence seemed to trip over itself before it could leave your mouth. you'd start speaking only to get flustered halfway through, lose your train of thought, and end up staring at the floor while desperately trying to remember what you were saying. it was embarrassing, especially when everyone around you seemed so self-assured. unfortunately for you, your awkwardness ended up making quite the impression.
Riddle Rosehearts
riddle initially assumes you're simply nervous because of your situation. considering you'd been dragged into an entirely different world, he finds it understandable. however, the first time you attempt to introduce yourself and spend nearly thirty seconds trying to get through your own name without stumbling over it, he finds himself unexpectedly caught off guard. you look so genuinely determined to speak despite your nerves that he can't bring himself to be annoyed. instead, he starts waiting patiently whenever you struggle. if someone interrupts you or tries to rush you, he'll immediately correct them. "allow them to finish." over time, he finds your shy mannerisms strangely endearing, though he'd sooner overblot again than admit it out loud. secretly, he becomes someone who listens carefully whenever you speak because he knows how much effort it takes for you to get the words out.
Leona Kingscholar
leona notices your habit almost immediately. at first, he thinks you're just intimidated by nrc. then he realizes you stammer even when speaking to grim. the discovery amuses him far more than it should. he'll occasionally watch you struggle through a sentence with half-lidded eyes, waiting to see if you'll make it to the end. yet despite teasing you occasionally, he never does it maliciously. in fact, if someone else laughs at you, his mood immediately sours. over time, leona becomes surprisingly patient. he'll wait through every awkward pause and unfinished sentence without complaint. sometimes he'll even finish your thought for you after spending enough time around you. the first time he correctly guesses what you were trying to say, you're so shocked that you forget to stutter entirely. leona never lets you live that down.
Azul Ashengrotto
azul completely misunderstands the situation at first. he assumes you're hiding something. every time you stumble over your words, he becomes convinced you're carefully choosing what information to reveal. then one day he watches you spend an entire minute trying to ask where a notebook went before accidentally mixing up half the words in the sentence. suddenly everything clicks. you're not calculating. you're just shy. the realization changes everything. azul finds himself becoming surprisingly gentle whenever you get flustered. he never points it out directly because he knows that would only make things worse. instead, he waits patiently and allows you to gather your thoughts. deep down, he relates more than he'd like to admit. after all, he knows exactly what it's like to feel self-conscious every time you speak.
Jamil Al-Asim
jamil notices your nervous habits long before anyone else. years of observing people have made him excellent at reading body language. he quickly realizes that whenever attention shifts toward you, your shoulders tense and your words start tripping over each other. unlike some of the others, he never teases you about it. if anything, he quietly helps. when you lose your train of thought, he'll calmly wait. if someone interrupts, he'll redirect the conversation back toward you. he understands how exhausting it can be to constantly feel watched or judged. eventually, talking around him becomes easier because you know he isn't going to pressure you. jamil ends up becoming one of the few people you can speak to without feeling like every word is a battle.
Kalim Viper
kalim thinks you're adorable. that's it. that's the entire problem. the first time you get flustered and accidentally trip over your words, he smiles so brightly that it only makes you more embarrassed. yet unlike people who might tease you, kalim simply finds your nervousness endearing. he never gets frustrated when you struggle to speak. in fact, he's probably the most enthusiastic listener imaginable. every time you manage to finish a sentence, he reacts as though you've delivered the greatest speech in history. "really? that's so cool!" the positivity helps more than he realizes. before long, you find yourself talking a little more around him because you know he'll always respond with encouragement. kalim never sees your stuttering as something embarrassing. to him, you're just you, and that's more than enough.
Vil Schoenheit
vil notices your nervousness almost immediately. at first, he assumes it's simply because you've been thrown into an entirely different world. however, after watching you spend nearly a full minute trying to ask a simple question before getting flustered and losing your train of thought halfway through, he realizes this is just how you are. surprisingly, he doesn't find it annoying. if anything, he finds it a little sad. not because you're shy, but because he can see how much you overthink every word before speaking. the first few times he catches you apologizing for stumbling over your sentences, he immediately stops you. "why are you apologizing?" he asks. when you awkwardly explain that people sometimes get frustrated waiting for you to finish speaking, vil's expression softens ever so slightly. "then they're the problem, not you." it's one of the first genuinely kind things he says to you, and it completely catches you off guard. after that, vil becomes surprisingly patient whenever you talk. he never rushes you, never interrupts, and never allows anyone else to make fun of you for it either. in fact, if someone tries, they're immediately met with one of his infamous looks. over time, he starts encouraging you to be more confident, not by forcing you into uncomfortable situations, but by reminding you that your words are worth hearing no matter how long it takes to say them. the first time you manage to speak your mind without stumbling, vil notices immediately. he doesn't make a huge deal out of it. instead, a small smile appears on his face and he simply says, "see? that wasn't so difficult." yet the pride in his voice makes you feel warmer than any grand compliment ever could.
Idia Shroud
idia practically recognizes a fellow sufferer. the first time he watches you try to introduce yourself and nearly combust from embarrassment halfway through, he immediately thinks, "oh, they're one of my people! ssr rate pull icl.." unlike everyone else, he completely understands the panic of social interaction. if anything, the two of you end up accidentally making each other more nervous. conversations between you sometimes become a disaster of awkward pauses, stuttering, and mutual panic. yet somehow that's exactly why idia feels comfortable around you. there's no pressure to be confident when neither of you knows what you're doing. he secretly finds it reassuring that someone else understands the struggle.
malleus is endlessly patient. the first time you stumble over your words while introducing yourself, he simply waits. then waits some more. then waits even longer. not because he doesn't notice your nervousness, but because he genuinely doesn't mind. while other people sometimes become awkward during long pauses, malleus seems perfectly content to stand there until you've collected your thoughts. strangely enough, this makes talking to him much easier. he never rushes you. never looks annoyed. never finishes your sentences for you. eventually, you realize he's one of the few people who makes you feel comfortable enough to speak freely. malleus himself finds your shy nature rather charming. he enjoys listening to you, even if it takes a little longer than usual to hear what you want to say.

All these industries with shortages of workers and they canât figure out why.
Im proposing the hypothesis that the reason we donât have enough doctors/pilots/bus drivers/etc is that maybe, just maybe, having your entire industry function as a lifelong hazing ritual isnât the best recruiting strategy.
Doctors are subject to 8 years of post-secondary education and are forced to work 48 hour shifts.
Pilots and other transportation workers have absurd hours of service requirements that start your rest period as âthe moment you shut the vehicle downâ and can be as short as 9 hours in some cases.
Railroad workers have to be available on-call 6 days a week and be ready within two hours notice. They donât get sick time.
Retail workers have to keep a veneer of politeness against any and all abuse or they can be fired.
Truck drivers get paid by mileage and rarely see pay for shipper or receiver delays.
Work should not be designed to make you a miserable burnout and yet here we are.
I spent the afternoon arranging our books by size and color (and itâs so satisfying and looks amazing) and my partner came home and stared in shock at the bookcase and then said âiâm a librarian, you canât do this.â
it has occurred me during this process that apparently not everyone thinks about books by what color they are? like, literally when iâm looking for a book, i picture it in my mind. i have a veryâŚtactile experience with the books i read and idk! i thought everyone did that lol.
my partner was like âhow will i find [this book] for instanceâ and i replied âeasy, itâs purpleâ and he looked at me like i was a witch.
This actually is interesting in terms of information-seeking behavior, which is a thing librarians think about a lot and often actually study (some library jobs require you to publish, and academic librarians, for instance, will often use the students at the college they work at to study how they search for information in order to figure out how to best provide them services).
When you go for an MLS (Masterâs of Library Science, which is a thing, and which is usually required for âprofessional-levelâ library work [which is also a weird and contentious concept that I wonât go into here]), one of the things you study is the organization of information. This deals with how to determine what a book or other material is âabout"âa concept we tongue-in-cheek call âaboutness"âand how to convey that to a potential user of the item and make it easy for them to find. Things like keywords and subject headings, do I put this book about how often wild birds attack aerial drones in with books about birds or with books about technology, if its a fictional novel do I put fantasy in itâs own section or mix it in with all of the other fiction, so on and so on.
OP is organizing books by how they would look for them. OPâs partner is thinking in terms of aboutness. This is a system that works for OP because itâs their personal library: they know basically what books they own and they only own books that are relevant to them, and if they know what the book looks like, that can be a quick way to find it.
In a library that assumes the public (or people who do not own that particular collection of books) are using the collection, that doesnât work. Books are often re-issued in multiple covers, or re-bound in new covers when they get worn out, and if the user doesnât know what the book looks like or is expecting a different cover, theyâre lost. Thatâs why non-personal libraries used standardized cataloging systems like the Dewey Decimal System or Library of Congress System to organize a book by what itâs âaboutâ, and then put books about the same or similar topics together, marked with labels and signage so a person unfamiliar with the book or collection can find their way to it.
Basically, OPâs system works for their own personal library, because itâs best suited to how the primary userâOP themselvesâlooks for books. OPâs librarian partner is coming from a background of thinking in terms of a public-facing collection, where aboutness is the key criteria and communicating it to a user unfamiliar with the collection is the priority.
