Thank you so much, Angel! I remember you commenting about that very line when I posted that fic. <3
āWhat? Like, a disabled protagonist? How would that even work? How could someone with a disability be the hero in an action show?ā local anime trash boy wonders while sitting next to his box sets of Full Metal Alchemist, showing no hint of irony or self awareness.Ā
but is Ed really disabled? sure I get he lost his arm and leg
but heās still able to move and do things perfectly
He has prosthetics. Having prosthetic limbs (that more than once break amd need repair) doesnt make him not disabled
It should also be noted that Ed:
-had to undergo very painful and lengthy surgery to get automailĀ
-had to relearn how to write because of his prosthesis (thereās a post going around showing he had to switch hands etc) and his handwriting is likely a lot worse due to that. This means automail isnāt super good for delicate work, unsurprising, considering what itās made of.Ā
-experiences phantom limb pain and therefore other associated stuff (this was only really shown in the manga)
-cannot go anywhere too cold without changing his automail or heāll get really bad frost bite and it will stop working
-cannot go anywhere too hot, period, because the metal attached and under his skin will overheat and he will be badly burned
-Reattachment is painful, but needs to be done frequently if he breaks or outgrows his automail
- itās HEAVY so much so that the strain has the potential to cause stress on his body, enough that itās even theorized as possiblyĀ stunting his growth.
-it requires really frequent maintenance or it will break down, as shown by how when he first moved out he forgot to do that and itā¦broke down.
-when it does need to be repaired, it takes time to do that, during which Ed uses regular prosthetics (that usually donāt quite fit him).
-costs a lot of money (not a problem for Ed due to high state alchemist salary/having mechanics as surrogate family, but explicitly noted to being the reason why most people in the fmaverse stick to regular prosthetics along with the painful surgery)
So Ed canāt actually do everything perfectly and experiences a lot of extra hassle, problems and pain people without automail donāt have to deal with!Ā And any advantages he does have are more suited to fighting than day to day life (being able to incorporate weapons/fake out people who want to blow up his arm).Ā
Arakawa did her research and thought it through. Automail is by no means a magic cure that solves all problems associated with losing a limb.
Thereās probably a German compound word for that feeling you get at 2am when youāre single in your mid twenties and the creeping doubt that youāve somehow missed your only chance at love because you didnāt meet someone in college and now itās too late
The german word you are looking for is āTorschusspanikā
Germans got a word for fucking EVERYTHING.
German is like the dictionary of obscure sorrows
Germany is a place of obscure sorrows

Hello. You know who I am?
Commissions | Merch | Ko-Fi
Iām not sure whether I should laugh or cry.
Is OP aware that oh so many books exist on this subject?
And that almost universally the ones authored by people with doctorates in classicism and mythology disagree with OP?
Including the⦠epic hymn that first told this story? You know whatās in that original source material⦠right?
Abducted, yes. Demeter mourned? Definitely. Rape, no.
So hereās some info on Ancient Greek wedding traditions which (oh my stars and garters!!) included abducting the bride. With the fatherās permission, which Hades got before he took her away.
Hereās a whole book on the subject of Ancient Greek wedding custom and its conflation with funeral rites. (Which sounds a bit like Hades and Persephone to anyone whoās ever dabbled in things like explication and context)
Hereās a link to another book that talks about Persephoneās rise to power as a result of her willingly eating the pomegranate seeds.
Oh shit!!
Hereās a whole bunch of myths and hymns that talk about her Queen of the Underworld badassery!!
Holy pug tacos Batman!!
Hereās another book about the myth focusing on the seasonal religious and liminal rites.Ā WHICH TAKE PLACE IN THE DRY SUMMER (not the fucking winter), which you know if you read a book.Way to go, OP!
All these fucking books! Ā What could anyone possibly do with them all?!?!?!?! Do you eat books to absorb their powers instead of read them?
A better guess would be that you got into a moral panic over the name of a certain Renaissance statue and maybe after reading three pages of Edith Hamilton or the first paragraph of a Wikipedia article. And then used that to castigate and demean not only the people who actually take their limited time to create gorgeous art but also to denigrate modern day worshippers of Persephone and Hades?
Maybe next time, you stringy piece of over-boiled okra, you might want to take your own advice and pick up a book, instead of reducing the feared and respected Queen of the Underworld who held power equal to or in many interpretations GREATER than her husband into a meaningless pastiche of female disenfranchisement that you seemingly plucked from your own ass.
JESUS CHRIST THANK YOU
I donāt often reblog posts of people getting owned, but when I doā¦
man the ancient greeks didnāt dare to speak persephoneās nameĀ she was that powerful and venerated (they called her Kore,Ā āthe maidenā), hades didnāt get that honour
Rebagel for those book links, I find the Persephone and Hades stuff on here fascinating and I want to research it more
Book links, owning and the sheer badassery that is Persephone.
reblog forever
Reblogging for the links until this misapprehension finally ceases.
See also:Ā Seduction and Rape in Greek Myth and Predatory Goddesses, both by classicist Mary Lefkowicz.
@thoughtsontomes you realize that every time I see Haides and Persephone I will be completely unable to not tag you, right? ;D
Holy shit as someone who is dedicated to these two in particular this post is a goldmine, especially because itās nearly impossible to find information about Persephone!!
Excellent post!
*Priest of Persephone
Also, retelling/reworking/deconstructing and analyzing stories is a thing that happens. If we have Persephone choosing instead of Zeus granting permission for an abduction/marriage maybe itās because we canāt imagine Someone who we know to be so powerful as lacking in agency. If we rework Hades as flustered and a maybe a little baffled by the spring time lady wanting a ride on his chariot to get away from an overbearing mother, or because heās the best of a lot of bad prospects, or just because she likes the ābad boyā (which is not a way Iād ever imagine him, good grief) maybe itās because Hades needs a little gentleness to match Persephoneās flowers.
