animation being treated like a genre instead of a medium is something that actually makes me go insane. beauty and the beast is a romance. the emperor's new groove is a buddy comedy. big hero 6 is a superhero movie. moana is an adventure film. the lion king is a drama. treasure planet is sci-fi. if i was talking to someone who hadn't seen these movies before, and they weren't specifically interested in animation as a medium, then i wouldn't necessarily assume they'd enjoy all of these. and that's just disney movies! try telling an anime fan that fruits basket and fullmetal alchemist are the same genre and see how they react!

i've been learning over time that when i watched S5 at the brand new age of 15, there were actually a lot of 10y/o kids doing it too. i never thought about it this way yet. even if preserving the show with these methods was popular AND (totally hypothetically) endorsed by netflix (lol), it'd still be so unlikely to reach the mainstream audience instead of only niche internet fandom spaces. whether we're talking about now or half a decade ago, it's peaked in terms of widespread recognition. that's incredibly depressing.

I wrote these tags bc when She-Ra was ongoing, I initially refused to watch it because I thought it would turn me gay. Watching S5 was instrumental in getting me out of conservative Christianity, out of my homophobic self-loathing.

I remember reading some cute autobio comics from a preschool teacher’s aid, where one kid asked her “Is it true that you’re a lesbian?” And when she said yes, followed up with: “Have you seen She-Ra?”

If shows like She-Ra aren’t legally accessible, then young kids won’t be able to watch them. She-Ra has done so much good and to watch it be removed from Netflix’s listing out of corporate greed is so heartbreaking for queer kids.

Laika are goddamn ARTISTS and MASTERS OF THEIR CRAFT. Look at the animation on Kubo and tell me it doesn’t feel more like CGI than stop motion sometimes because it’s so smooth.
