Court of the Dragon Interior Decor

This mashup, or audio collage, originated from the same decade as Max Ernst’s Une Semaine de Bonté. The coherence of this track reminded me of the coherence and internal logic found in Ernst’s collages. It is beautiful and full of rich chords and harmonies played both on the guitar and the cello that splurge into each other.

The original track ‘Close Your Eyes’ by Al Bowlly was released in the year 1934 - the same year as Max Ernst’s collage novel Une Semaine De Bonté. the idea behind this piece was that by slowing down passages of the track you highlight the beauty, harmony and chaos found within. The less than subtle shifts in playback speed coupled with the audio quality are also meant to be nods to the experience of listening and playing with vinyl record players.

This process harks back to the Surrealist techniques and games of the 1920s/30s that accessed the subconscious in order to create poetry, drawings, paintings, collage and film. 

The process of slowing it down dramatically felt like zooming into the sound waves that make up the song. The clarinet sounds more like a string section and the brushed snare is transformed into a surging sound reminiscent of waves breaking or a giant machine cycling slowly.

I am going to carry on developing ideas that have origins for me in Max Ersnt's Collage novel 'Une Semaine de Bonté' through using music and sound as well as images.
