What did Ethan do the night Edenbrook closed? Set after c19.

Author’s note: I’ve been playing with an idea that Ethan and MC might’ve met before OH started but not realised. Hope you enjoy this, it’s fluffy (2.3k words).

A warm voice rang out through the dark Edenbrook atrium, startling Ethan.

Naveen: then why are you making Mc a Valentine’s Day card?

Ethan: you’re on thin fucking ice

You really don’t have to have a reason to block people beyond “seeing their content makes me feel bad and I’m not here to feel bad, I am here to have fun.”

The biggest thing we get wrong about the internet is this idea that blocking someone is a sign of weakness or irrationality.

Description: Ethan usually doesn’t plan elaborate dates or dance in the moonlight. But for her? Anything.

Preview: Olivia tilted her head, listening closely. “I hear music.”

“Good. That means we won’t look like utter fools when I do this.” Ethan slipped his arm around her waist, turning her to face him. “I don’t think we had enough time to do this properly at the gala.”

“Are you asking me to dance?”

A text tore her attention away from the charts she was trying to organize before Edenbrook’s impending shutdown.

Relieved for the distraction, she read the message. Come to my office. Curious, she typed a response and slipped her phone back into her pocket as she made her way to Ethan’s office. She stepped inside, closing the door behind her.

“What’s this thing you have for me, boss?” She paused in her tracks and stared at him, surprised to see him dressed in a black blazer with a gold handkerchief tucked into the pocket. For several long moments, she gaped at him.

Ethan looked up from his desk, a suspicious smile lifting the corners of his lips. He handed her a box wrapped in tissue paper. “I hope you don’t have plans tonight, because I made some.”

Olivia peeled the tissue paper off the box. She lifted the lid to reveal a gold dress. Letting out a low whistle, she unfolded it and held it up. “You bought me a dress to match you?”

Ethan nodded as he stood up. “Yes. Tonight seems like a good night to put it to use.”

“That’s really mysterious.”

“You can go change in- oh!” Ethan stopped abruptly, blinking in surprise when she discarded her clothes into a pile on his desk. Feeling warm, he cleared his throat.  “I suppose that works, too.”

Dr. Ethan Ramsey doesn’t care.

It’s a point of pride for him. He does his job - and he does it damn well - but that chip that most people have, the one that makes them ache and burn and torment themselves over the thoughts and feelings of others—no.

That he does not have.

Which is why he finds himself unable to explain—unable to reconcile with his own perceptions of himself, why the woman beside him in this moment makes him ache and burn and torment himself, day in and day out. Why the only thing he finds himself caring about is her thoughts. Her feelings.

Why the feel of her hand in his, gripping him tightly, the trust that’s imbued in that simple gesture as they walk recklessly through the corridors of the quiet hospital, is enough to knock the breath out of his lungs.

Ethan Ramsey finds himself realizing that, for someone who had never cared, this seems to matter a whole lot.
