I think he as a character is a great equal to someone like Lugnut in other continueties. He is fiercely loyal to the decepticon cause and in his own way, brutal...yet he really cares for his team. He tries to keep them together to co-operate, with mild success. He is not tactically smart but he is emotionally. He even backed up Starscream when things were dicey.

What I think Energon (overall) did well was slight hints of emotion and character tragedies. After Unicron Wars, Decepticons and Autobots did work together but there was always some underlying distrust or disgust at the cons. Demolishor was put on lower rank duty than his skills were useful for. So when he heard his only two true friends were gone and Autobots didn't do their job correctly, he was rightfully upset and worried. And later, to see Cyclonus alright was a big relief but to know Megatron was able to be revived.. it is a conflict in his mind.

To follow his old leader and friends? Or to try and still prove that he was someone to trust with the Autobots. He chose the cons, a safe option as he knew them and trusted them still. But seeing that Megatron was about to injure a lot of people did bother him, and a lot of the new aspects Megatron has picked up from being part of a dead god's corpse.

So when Demolishor saved Megatron from the energon grid put up by the Autobots...it quite literally destroyes all the time and energy Demolishor spent to try and mend bonds. He did his best to be friendly, especially to Ironhide, he tried to push equal treatment for his con comrades to be treated like autobots would treat each other... but in the end, Autobots did not care who they hurt in the end to keep their own ilk safe. So I think that is why, when Demolishor swore revenge on Optimus Prime, it was very personal. The hate that ran deep into his spark, the only thing left of him and what Megatron kept safe to remake Demolishor. Demolishor's new body and different personality can be seen as what he is without hesitation or worry, desire to fight to point of depravity.
