the idea that a sex scene in fiction is fundamentally useless/simply for audience titillation UNLESS they’re fucking infodumping exposition while they bone or something is so funny and myopic to me. like, you really genuinely believe for real that there is NOTHING to be gained about your understanding of a story or characters simply from how they approach and engage in sex? really for real?

Okay, you've made me curious. Where exactly do you draw the line? What degree of realism/fantasy/believability adds to the story? What makes a good sex scene as opposed to one that's just unnecessary fluff?

listen, im not saying this needs to be true for everyone, simply that it’s true for me: i don't really believe in "necessary" scenes in the first place. every scene is a choice the storyteller made. i'm not in the editing room, i didn't write the script, and i'll never know what was cut or why this version exists, short of the creator releasing extra material to explain just that. so i don't feel qualified to say "this scene objectively shouldn't be here." i either think the movie works or it doesn't and sometimes there’s a sex scene in it

i just personally dont find sex scenes that actionably different from any other repeated tableau in cinema, like the aforementioned dinner scenes, or driving scenes, or getting ready for bed scenes. a lot of movies tend to be about human life and many humans frequently have sex, among other things

Citations could be so awesome without copyright. Imagine just being able to click on a footnote and it takes you to the exact section of another book being quoted. Imagine how much that would do for stemming misinformation.
