In light of the neo-nazi anti immigration rallies that happened in so called Australia over the weekend that included neo-nazi attacks on Aboriginal women and a sacred camp site, I need to say something about the way people talk about immigration and First Nations sovereignty. I'm begging people in so called Australia to please remember that any discussion about immigration in this country must acknowledge that Australia is a settler colonial project and any and all migrants and their descendants in this country are settlers. So called Australia has no treaty with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. First Peoples did not consent to the arrival of settlers, and all settlers contribute to the colonial project that displaces, dispossesses, and disenfranchises Blakfellas on their stolen land. Please, stop reframing the reality of settler colonialism as simply multicultural immigration. When you say this, you're erasing First Nations' peoples sovereignty. You are not immigrants on stolen land, you're settlers and the descendants of settlers on land stolen for you to take. I'm not trying to say that immigrant settlers are not welcome or should face discrimination. Far from it, in fact. Half my family are Lebanese migrant settlers, the other half are Blakfellas who married Scottish convict settlers and their descendants. Migration of ppl from all over the world has been a part of this continent's history long before Europeans colonised it, for as long as there have been people. But for the last 200+ years migration to so called Australia is inseperable from the settler colonial project, from the attempted genocide of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. If you are a migrant settler or a descendant of them, then you are a settler. Until Blakfellas have treaty, until the sovereign people of this continent regain self determination and the ability to have autonomy over our ancestral lands, non-Indigenous people are not guests. You're settlers in a colony, and that colony may harm you too, especially if you're not white or Christian or English speaking. But you're still a settler and when you reframe that as "immigrant" you're erasing what this so called nation is: a settler colonial project built on the bodies of Blakfellas who are still without a treaty, and without protection, as was shown over the weekend.
