Although I do not agree with the “you know this one” image, in reference to a woman not wearing the hijab, or showing off her hair in public, the first picture depicting a hijab-wearing muslim woman in comparison to an unexposed, wrapped lollipop sort of displays the societal views of the oppression of women in Islam. In the West, society portrays Muslim women as “slaves” to their men, or “submissive” and being victims of violent acts, however we learned in the Islam Feminism lecture that history pleads a different case, and as a Muslim myself, women in my culture are not deemed as superior or inferior to men in any way. Although, often times, men are deemed as the breadwinners over women within the Muslim culture as well.

This image sparks the controversial debate over sex work and whether it should be decriminalized or not. I believe there are not enough rights, or human rights, that cover or protect sex workers. The argument that sex work is also work, or labor, has been hindering society and its views on this specific industry. Although females are visualized more than men in this industry, both genders do play a role in helping establish these basic rights in order to protect them. 

I found this image quite interesting, as wee see an older lady perhaps at some sort of conference or meeting displaying colored, play money and an original US dollar bill. I believe this illustrates the pay advantages men have over women, depicting that men get paid at a higher rate in the same occupation/position a women might be in. It is unfortunate that even our labor is discriminated against and seen superior over another groups. 

The two sides of abortion, advocating it and against it. Although I am personally against it because of my beliefs, I believe the stance the government has on it by not funding it is appropriate. A life simply cannot be taken away, because it was a mistake or not the right time. It should also be up to both parents to decide on to keep the child or not, depending on circumstances of course. 

“If I change my mind, we’ll stop”, is one of numerous phrases that is important to acknowledging permission for sexual contact, but this one is also essential to understand as well. Just because an individuals says, “Yes”, does not mean they can’t change their mind and say, “No”, before or during any engagement. This goes for both men and women, as sexual assault and violence has been an ongoing issue in our society, and even campus. 

I found this picture interesting, as the “enter” button is the “education” button. Many schools lack resources and funding, including technology that has been proven to improve the performance of students in classroom settings and controlled environments. Coming from an inner-city gang infested Chicago Public high school, my school’s resources sucked. We had a library that was restricted for classrooms only, one computer lab with about 10 of 20 computers that functioned properly. Long story short, funding sucked and it deprived intelligent students from an education that was almost 1000000x better just across the street. Location . Location. Location!

I see this photo as our social structure. We are not necessarily peasants to a King, but i see the King as the Federal Reserve Bank, who consequentially controls everything else in the world, including the higher clergy, nobles, and lesser nobles. I believe there is a higher power, other than the president of the US, that controls the economy and politics in our society. It is all about money and we are all prisoners to it. SORRY>

This picture illustrates the various types of mental health issues. One thing i’d like to point out is depression. Even though I believe it is bolder and written bigger than the rest of the tags, it is an issue that is quite overlooked and not deemed as a “real” health issue. 

 Being from Chicago and listening to a music genre that originated out of Chicago, known as Drill Music, I can understand that this picture perhaps comes from a music video, but others may definitely take it out of context and see it as more of a threat than entertainment. Although violence is being promoted, it is seen as a masculine trait and is only associated with the terms “goons” and “savages”, to refer to their peers that tag along with their style. Violence and gangs, and the growing black market of illegal guns and ammunition in the city has labeled these individuals, based on their appearances (such as in the picture) as the perpetrators, regardless of involvement. 

This picture speaks multiple things to me. It reiterates doing gender by applying specific colors to a certain gender. The blue post-it has “HE” written on it, presuming that the color blue is a male/masculine/boy color. The pink post-it has “SHE” written in it, emphasizing that the color pink is only applicable to females/girls, or the opposite gender. Unfortunately, these colors have set gender rules in our society, where boys are supposed to act a certain way, while females are also expected to behave appropriately. 

This picture depicts a cultural exchange of music and dance tradition between the people of Palestine and India. As a Palestinian, I can clearly see who is Indian and who is Palestinian by the way they are dressed, and their body laguages which determine whether they know the dance they are performing, called the dabke, which is a traditional Palestinian dance. 

This illustrates that the guy is confused as to what to wear; a skirt and crop shirt (female appearance) or jeans and a button up shirt and tie (male appearance). Even though some may view this as an easy choice, others really do face these challenges on a day to day basis.
