okay question for those who have read all of the grishaverse books— i've only read the soc duology and i fell in love with it. i've seen the s&b netflix show and i liked it a lot too, but i know that the show tweaked certain characters (and ofc the timeline of events). i started the s&b books bc i want that ✨context✨ but i'm not feeling it honestly.

this is obv a subjective question, but like, which books from the grishaverse did y'all genuinely enjoy? bc i know the writing gets better as leigh goes on. lmk however you like— through my ask box, reblogs, comments whatever

For me, the SoC duology is my favorite (though I might be biased because I read those first). The S&B trilogy felt like a very standard YA fantasy/adventure and wasn’t really my cup of tea, though it lays the groundwork for a lot of the worldbuilding that comes to play in later books, particularly the KoS duology. I liked that the KoS duology pulled from both of the previous series while exploring new aspects of the Grishaverse.

I think that’s something that Leigh does very well. Each set of books gets to be its own story while enjoying the richness of the world she’s created. S&B is the story of a Chosen One plucked from obscurity and entrusted with the fate of the world. SoC is about a group of outcasts finding comfort in each other while resisting (in their own ways) a world that has done them wrong. KoS has political intrigue and war, and explores who you become when you choose how to lead. Leigh plays with different nuances and subgenres with each series, and I’m excited to see what she has in store next! Plus I think recognizing that each series is tonally different helps explain why I like certain Grishaverse arcs better than others.

Also, if you haven’t read The Language of Thorns, I highly recommend it! It’s a collection of folk tales/short stories from Novyi Zem, Fjerda, and Ravka. The stories read as though they exist separately from the other novels, so you can enjoy them without prior knowledge of the Grishaverse, but I feel they add additional nuance to the cultures and characters. Plus there are some fun easter eggs, and the book is beautifully designed and illustrated.
