People forget that later Nina had an entire monologue about herself and her crew in regards to parents, and how lost they were, but then knowing that, at least, Jesper had someone who was there to tell him that it would be okay. She had imagined them gone with Colm somewhere in the yellow fields of Novyi Zem with the cloudless blue sky overhead and a quiet cozy cabin. She had imagined a life free of the one they were living in. She had wished that they had someone to assure them so they didn't feel so hopeless and alone. She even felt bad for Colm when she realized that Jesper was conning him while he was still far away.

colm fahey was NOT a good father and he did not have a healthy relationship with his son whatsoever. in fact it's literally stated that the primary cause of jesper's gambling addiction stems from his father because he instilled fear and shame within jepser just for being grisha. even in his childhood, aditi had to teach jesper to use his powers as a fabrikator in secret. a father who fears his son cannot have a healthy relationship with his child because no matter how much he hides it, that fear will always be apparent through his actions.
