and like… i know that yiddish culture does still exist, and that there are thriving (if small) jewish communities in eastern europe. it’s not my intention to diminish that, or to romanticize the past or an imagined future at the expensive of living breathing jews. but… it’s not the same as it would be, we’ve lost so so so much it’s unfathomable. the fabric of every jewish person’s life would be different.

and that’s not even touching on the ways north american judaism would be different too, how many jews assimilated completely out of fear when they found out what was happening in europe, how even those who maintained jewish practice still managed to turn that practice into an assimilated and respectable version of itself, how many complexes we developed as we tried to bury what happened and the effect it had on us.

So the reality we’ve got as jews is similar. This is the bad ending and we’re never gonna know what would have happened if the holocaust hadn’t taken place.

I can spend my entire life going insane thinking about what turtle island would be like if europeans had never made contact. Or if we had stopped conquest and expansion (because it was NOT inevitable thank you).
