SPOILERS: F1 THE MOVIE = ANTI-FEMINIST
The race team's technical director is a woman, the first in F1 history. She was based almost entirely on Bernie Collins, which adds another weird factor to it. She's supposed to be brilliant, but apparently, she designed a quote, "shitbox," and the team hasn't scored a point in three seasons, which sounds so unrealistic.
She apparently falls for Brad's character, listens to his suggestions, abandons her car concepts, and suddenly, it drives like a dream.
WORST OF ALL. They fuck the night before a race, and then Brad's character breaks it off, making him look noble. This leads to questioning why a woman is written into such a great position only to make her inept at her area of expertise.
Next, the other female characters are written off to the side or described as "wheel gun girls." One in particular is shown dropping equipment and bumbling in the garage, and only knows what she's doing by the movie's end.
All of the failures of these characters could be considered to be because they're women in a man's world, which is utter bullshit.
They even suggest that Brad's character has a solid career because the women "love his smile." Listen, I thirst over Fernando, but let's be real: I'm more impressed with his racecraft than anything else.
Next, and arguably the saddest part of this whole shitshow is the lack of inclusion of Simone Ashley. Simone is a POC woman and was meant to have a bigger role. She spent a year filming and promoting the movie as recently as last month, only to be cut nearly entirely out of the film. Her one line is to Brad's character in a nightclub, and she asks him if he knows Carlos Sainz...
Lastly, Bruckheimer, the supposed legendary producer of the movie, said that men will be "dragging their girlfriends to the cinema, " saying the quiet parts out loud.
The review I read basically told us to not expect intense, layered, and competent women portrayed in the movie. What. The. Hell.
I know this a white western feminist thing to bitch about. Women the world over have it much worse for so many different reasons. But folks, I am TIRED. Surface level shit like this is what brought me into intersectional feminism, and it's only radicalized me more.
I'm seriously going to boycott the movie. It's a disgrace to the sport and a disgrace to women everywhere. No hate if you watch it, that's your choice, but I cannot support something this ignorant.
