you can try and remove the hockey part all you want, that ilya and shane's relationship exists despite the hockey and hockey is just what pays the bills. but i need you to understand that hockey players are weird little freaks and even among straight players, there is a constant homoerotic thrum of how much they love and respect other players. and this isn't to say that every player is secretly gay, but they are certainly gay for Good Hockey. (just look at how any active player talks about sidney crosby, you would think they are all deeply in love with him.. and a lot of them probably are, without realizing it.. except nate mac who is just on something else. but they all deeply relish either playing with him or playing against him and definitely being able to provoke him into a fight). like most of these guys are either just dumb or Hockey Autistic and because hockey is the hardest sport to truly master and it shapes almost the entirety of their lives and identity, it makes sense that that who they're inspired, influenced, and challenged by is Good Hockey. and you also wouldn't have good rivalries without good competition; rarely is it ever actually personal off the ice. if ilya didn't respect shane's play so much, he would not have entertained him for a second after world juniors because beating him to first overall at the draft was so narrow and not guaranteed. if shane wasn't mesmerized by what a player ilya was, he would not have even bothered to introduce himself or be so easily provoked by him or be so desperate to beat him. how well they play is absolutely tied to their attraction to one another. the games are the foreplay, being able to see a guy you're sexually and romantically attached to do the thing you also do as well, if not better than you, is just one of those niche little weird things about this insular world that only they kinda only understand about each other. and i know for a fact they've traded orgasms for goals and get turned on by each other's post-game funk like i just know it and licked each other's thigh bruises from blocked shots
