Lewis Joins the Gang (Again)
As usual, Arthur was the first to wake up.  He felt like heâd taken too much pain medication before going to bed andâŚthere was something on top of him that was not Vivi or Mystery.  It felt smooth and warm.  He sat up.  âWhat.â He stared at the pile of purple ghosts covering him, Vivi, and Mystery.  On a purple bed.  InâŚa large room.  It looked like the entrance room of a mansion.
Wait, wait, waitâŚHe was starting to remember.  âUh, ghost guy, you there?â  Arthur started shaking Vivi.  âHey, hey, Vivi.  Wake up. Something crazy.  And ghosty.  And maybe cursy.  And I think youâll need to drive today.â  He picked up one of the Deadbeats.  âWhy are you not scaring me?â
Vivi groaned. Â âFive more minutes.â
âYou are literally covered in ghosts,â Arthur said as he attached his prosthetic.
Vivi almost immediately shot up. Â âOh my gosh! Theyâre so cute!â Â She started scratching one on the top of its head. Â âYes, you are, yes you are.â Â She paused. Â âHey, where are we?â
âHaunted house,â replied Arthur.
Vivi blinked. Â âHuh. Â Why donât I remember that?â
âGhost guy saidâŚâ Arthur paused and looked around.  âActually, where is he?â  One of the ghosts popped up holding a pretty blue heart with orange filigree all over it.  âHuh. Why does that seem familiar?â
âHmâŚâ  Vivi picked up the heart.  âWhy is the color-â
Vivi was interrupted when purple fire shot out of the heart and formed a familiar ghost. Â Well, familiar to Arthur anyway. Â âHey, ghost guy.â
Lewis blinked. Â âUh, hey.â
âWhoa! Â You look so cool!â crowed Vivi.
Lewis blushed a little. Â âR-really?â
âYeah, the suit, and the skull, and the fire, itâs awesome!â said Vivi. Â She frowned. Â âUh, did you do something to our memories?â
Lewis quickly held his hands up. Â âNot on purpose! Â I tried to introduce myself, but whenever I said my name, you passed out and forgot stuff!â
Vivi frowned.  âMaybe itâs a safeguard?  Knowing someoneâs true name can give you power over themâŚâ
âBut I really wanted to tell you my name!â protested Lewis.
âAnd we appreciate that, but given the side effects, you probably shouldnât,â mused Vivi.
âAnd-and there was that other thing,â said Lewis. Â âSee?â Lewis put his glamour back on. Â âThis is supposed to be what I looked like when I was alive, and thatâs what I see when I look in the mirror, but Artie said thatâs not what I look like!â
Both humans winced. âOof, yeah, thatâs not a human face,â agreed Vivi.  âCould youâŚâ Lewis dropped the glamour.  âThanks.  Okay, that makes less sense.  Glamours are specifically for blending in.â  Vivi hummed in thought for several moments.  âThis could take a while to figure outâŚBut we need to get to Techno Con.â
Lewis blinked. Â âTechno Con?â
âIâve got a booth there to show off my prosthetics,â explained Arthur. Â âAnd Iâm hoping to pick up a few new things myself.â
âOh, congratulations,â said Lewis as an idea started to occur to him.  âButâŚMaybeâŚIf itâs a not a problem, I could go with you.  Then youâd have plenty of time to figure out whatâs wrong.â
Arthurâs mouth fell open in shock and nervousness. Â Vivi thought a moment. Â âThatâs a tempting offer, but I have some concerns.â Â She pointed at Arthur. Â âFirstly, Arthur has to agree.â
Lewis nodded. Â âOf course.â
âSecondly, how do we know you wonât try to kill us or drain our energy?â pointed out Vivi.
âI couldâve done that while you were sleeping,â pointed out Lewis. Â He paused. Â âNot that I would!â
âHmâŚâ  Vivi nodded.  âGood point.  Secondly, why would you want to come with us?  Most ghosts are tethered to a place.â
Lewis winced. Â âI didnât want to stay there.â
Vivi winced. Â âAh. Â Sorry.â
âAndâŚI was lonely,â admitted Lewis.  âI donât want to be alone.â
âWhat about these guys?â asked Arthur, holding up a chirping Deadbeat.
âThe Deadbeats are more like cats. Â I can talk to them, but they donât give me a response,â explained Lewis. Â âThey are my friends, and they helped me stay sane, but I missed being able to talk to people.â Â Especially these people.
âBit of an unusual motive, but I can believe it,â commented Vivi. Â âBut why us, havenât you run into other people before?â
âIâve only been dead for a few months.â Â At least Lewis thought it was months. Â He hadnât been able to keep track of time during his trek to civilization. Â âAnd I kind of died in the middle of nowhere, and it turns out it can take a while to find a road if you donât have a map or compass.â
âI think I saw an episode of Mythbusters about that,â commented Arthur.
Vivi nodded. Â âOkay, you want friends, but if you havenât been dead that long, wouldnât it make more sense to return home where your friends and family are? Â Or are you worried about how theyâll react?â she asked.
âOh, I actually was on my way home,â said Lewis. Â âI just ran into you first, and I figured I could hitch a ride with you since Iâm from Tempo too.â
âHow do you know weâre from Tempo?â asked Arthur.
âYou guys are kind of infamous. Â I wouldnât be surprised if everyone in town knew who you were,â explained Lewis.
âTrue, random strangers will walk up to me and ask me tips about ghosts and stuff,â agreed Vivi. âWhat about you? Â Any chance weâve ever met before.â
Lewis perked up. âYeah! Â I was a chef at Pepper Paradiso!â
Arthur frowned. âPepper Paradisoâs a restaurant?â he asked in confusion.
âYeah, it serves pretty spicy food so you wouldnât like it,â said Vivi. Â It was why sheâd never taken him there for a date.
âHuh? Â Youâve both been there plenty of times though,â said Lewis.
âNah, I canât stand spicy food,â said Arthur. Â âIf itâs mostly spicy stuff Iâd avoid it.â
Oh, this was so much worse than Lewis had thought. Â âA-And we went to the same high school!â
âWere we in the same grade?â asked Arthur.
âUh, I was in the grade below you,â said Lewis.
âThen you might be in some of our yearbooks,â reasoned Arthur. Â âOf course we donât exactly carry those around.â
âUgh, yeah, and itâs probably been long enough that you canât look at it online,â muttered Lewis. âI went to Tome Tomb all the timeâŚWhy donât either of you remember meâŚâ Lewis finished sadly.
âWell, in oneâs day-to-day life you donât remember every single person you run into,â pointed out Arthur.
âIâm seven feet tall though!â shouted Lewis, getting frustrated. Â âI stood out like a sore thumb!â
âOkay, yeah, thatâd be pretty memorable,â agreed Arthur. Â âYouâd think weâd remember someone like that.â
âHmâŚYou know, I donât remember anyone talking about a chef at Pepper Paradiso going missing,â mused Vivi.  âI wonder if any memories were erased from everyoneâs minds.â
The thought was so horrifying that Lewis could just stare at them in horror.
âWhoa, thatâs a bit of a big leap!â pointed out Arthur. Â âI mean itâs weird neither of us have heard about a local giant, but we might just be clueless. Heck, maybe we could call home and ask while weâre traveling.â
âTrue,â agreed Vivi. âAlthough even if thatâs wrong, Iâd like to help this guy. Â Something really odd is going on with him.â
Arthur bit his lip and studied the nervous looking Lewis. Â He weighed the pros and cons. Â He sighed. Â âIf you canât disguise yourself, you canât really go out in public. Â You okay with that?â
âWell, I could turn invisible,â pointed out Lewis, doing so for a moment to prove that was a thing he could do. Â âIf I didnât let other people know I was around, would that be all right?â
Arthur thought for a moment before sighing. Â âAs long as you let us know where you are, yeah.â
Vivi gave Arthur a startled look, not expecting him to support this. Â Still, if he was okay with it, she wasnât gonna give up this opportunity to get a ghost teammate who would maybe help them out on investigations and let her study him a bit. Â âOkay, so if you and your Deadbeats (Heh, funny name.) agree to behave and stay out of sight, you can travel with us until we got back to Tempo. Â Deal?â
âWhen will you be going back to Tempo?â asked Lewis.
âWell, we have like 8 days funds, but depending on if we earn anything we might travel around a bit longer,â explained Arthur.
Lewis was familiar with this traveling plan, so he nodded. Â âItâs a deal.â
âGreat! Â Now we should probably head out,â said Vivi. Â âWe donât want to fall too far behind in our plans.â
Lewis nodded. Â âSure thing.â Â He then proceeded to collapse the entire house into fire and absorb it into his anchor. Â He paused as he saw the other three staring at him in shock. Â âUh, did I forget to mention I could do that?â
âYes,â squeaked Arthur.
âOops.â Â Lewis chuckled nervously. Â âWell, yeah, I can make houses. Â And other stuff.â Â He coughed nervously somehow. Â âSo, thatâs your van, right? Â Iâll just go settle into the back.â Â He zoomed off.
Arthur turned to Vivi. âI feel like we mightâve bitten off more than we can chew.â
Vivi shrugged. Â âWell, nothing we can do now. Â Wanna go grab some waffles?â
âHmâŚIâd rather just have some yogurt and fruit.  Not that hungry,â said Arthur as they walked back to the van.
