The difference a few seconds make
A couple of days ago I wondered how the altered memories would be affected if Lewis had turned around just a little earlier and realized Arthur was possessed before dying. Couldnât stop thinking about it. Came up with several ideas about how things would go.
So here you guys go.
âOh, Iâm so excited!â said Vivi as she practically bounced in her seat. Â âAt least two weeks of traveling, maybe more, and all sorts of fun stops!â Â She turned to Arthur. Â âWhat are you looking forward to the most?â
Arthur hummed in thought for a moment. Â âIâd have to say the Techno Expo. Â There are some really interesting exhibits there besides mine. Â Hopefully, Iâll be able to take some time to check âem out. Thereâs a one about using body heat to power electronics that would improve my arm.â
Vivi very carefully did not look at Arthurâs new arm. Â He didnât enjoy people staring at his prosthetic, especially if they were the nosy sort who asked questions. Â Yeah, that probably didnât apply to Vivi, but she still felt Arthur ought to be treated like he still had both his arms. Â âI have no idea how that would work, but Iâm sure youâll figure it out no problem!â
Arthur smiled at her. âThanks. Â What about you? Â Anything youâre looking forward to?â
âIâm just hoping we see something supernatural this time,â said Vivi. Â âI know that the hoaxes with get us some more funds for traveling, but theyâre just so disappointing, ya know.â
Arthur chuckled nervously. Â âIâm not really sure which I prefer.â
âThatâs fair. Â At least we only have four items on that itinerary. Â Well, if you donât include the Ripley Museum weâre going to.â
âItâs haunted? I donât remember seeing that in the brochureâŚâ
âNot so much the museum as the items inside of it. Â Some of them are cursed or haunted or magical. Â Fortunately, Ripley was aware of this and put up all sorts of protections,â explained Vivi. Â âSo do the regular triple photographing.â
Triple photographing was the term theyâd given to the method of photographing when they were ghost hunting. Nothing complicated. Â They just took three photos in quick succession. Â It helped them determine if anything odd that showed up was just a weird artifact instead of a spirit of some kind.
âYou and Ripley wouldâve gotten along,â commented Arthur.
Vivi giggled. Â âYeah, we wouldâve, wouldnât we?â
âHey, random thought, if you could, would you-what the heck?â
âHm?â
âThe engine just stopped!â said Arthur. Â Sure enough, the van had gotten a lot quieter, and they were slowing down quickly. Â âYou gotta be kidding me! Â I went over every part and made sure it was in tip top shape before we set out!â Â Arthur glared at the various displays in front of them. Â What were they even called? Â Was it part of the dashboard? Â Was it all considered part of the dashboard? Â Should she ask?
Viviâs thought process was derailed as a large mansion came into view. Â It was old, dark, decrepit, and generally creepy looking. What was weird was that it was visibly beating. Â The three stared at it for several moments before Arthur broke the silence. Â âVivi?â
âYeah?â
âThatâs a haunted house, isnât it?â
âOr a very good fake,â admitted Vivi because she has learned that you can fake anything with the right technology. Â âBut if itâs real it would explain why the van stopped working.â
Arthur groaned. âGreatâŚâ  He turned to look at Vivi.  âI donât suppose I can talk you into helping me push the van out of range?â
Vivi did consider it. âIâm not sure weâre strong enough to do it, and we were planning to check out haunted houses on this trip. Â I mean you can stay here if you want to. If it is an actual haunting, itâs probably a pretty powerful ghost.â
Arthur bit his lip but shook his head. Â âNah, I-Iâll be f-fine.â
Vivi smiled and gave Arthur a peck on his cheek. Â âDonât worry. Iâll make sure nothing happens to you.â That got a thankful smile from Arthur.
And that was how they found themselves walking up to doors (that opened on their own and then closed on their own) into what looked like a fairly fancy if damaged manor. For some reason there was a lot of purple.
âHey, the candles are burning purple,â commented Vivi. Â âThink weâll be able to tell if theyâre those specially made rainbow candles if we take them apart?â
âUhâŚIâd avoid breaking anything,â said Arthur as stared at a painting with glowing eyes that seemed to be staring back.  ââCause Iâm starting to lean towards the âactual ghostâ theory.â
Vivi made a pleased sound. Â âWell, better say hi. Â Hello! We donât mean to intrude, but our van broke down, and weâre kind of stuck. Â Weâll be out of your hair once we figure out how to fix it. Â If you arenât happy about our presence, let us know, and weâll leave.â
âJust, uh, p-please donât, you know, try t-to k-k-kill us,â added Arthur.
Mystery didnât react to what either of them said. Â He was more distracted by the familiar scent he was picking up. Â He let out a few barks.
And that was when several purple bedsheet looking ghosts started popping out of the woodwork and floating around the group. Â Vivi let out an ecstatic squee. Â Arthur recoiled with a shriek. Â Mystery barked at them.
âTheyâre so cute!â squealed Vivi.
âWhy are there so many of them?â questioned Arthur. Â âIsnât it usually just one or two ghosts?â
Vivi paused in thought before carefully reaching out towards one. Â When it didnât react badly to being touched, she gave it a pat. Â âActually, youâve got a point. Â These guys donât seem to have enough power to manifest. Maybe if they were pooling their energy together (which would explain why they all look the same) they could manifest. Â Or maybe thereâs another, stronger ghost thatâs helping them manifest. Â That does happen sometimes.â
Arthur blinked as he tried to shoo several of the ghosts away from his prosthetic, which they seemed to have taken a strong interest in. Â âUh, how much st-stronger are we t-talking ab-about here?â
Before Vivi had a chance to answer, something tugged his arm up with a surprising amount of strength. The surprised look on Viviâs face made it clear it was not one of the tiny, purple ghosts. Â Arthur gulped and slowly turned around.
The first thing that came to mind upon seeing the ghost was âbigâ. Â The second thing was âskullâ. Â The third was âpurple pompadour?â because the ghost did indeed have a glowing purple pompadour sprouting out of its jawless skull. Â Â Arthur wasnât sure what to do as the ghost studied his prosthetic for several moments. Â âYou have a metal arm.â
Arthur nodded. Â âY-y-y-yeah.â
The ghost somehow blinked despite having no eyelids and quickly let go of Arthurâs arm. Â âWhoa! Iâm not gonna do anything to you!â Â Â Fire burst out of the top of the ghostâs suit and engulfed his skull for a moment before reforming into an admittedly handsome face with dark skin and a hooked nose. Â Still had a purple pompadour and freaky eyes though. âItâs me, Lewis.â
