I’m in love with this photo of Arlene Martel (T’Pring) so I had to make these icons. I’m adding the transparent version as well!

They also use their fingers to kiss - a gesture known as an ozh'esta. We see Spock’s parents do this the show, and we see Spock do this with a Romulan (a similar species of alien) so this is well-established lore, and not some obscure or contested trivia. 

Vulcans kiss with their hands. Ergo, Kirk and Spock holding hands is a kiss. A very passionate one, at that.

Also, in the novelization of the same film, which was written by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, Spock thinks of Kirk as his t’hy’la which is a vulcan term that cannot be translated, but roughly means a combination of friend, brother, and lover. This is interpreted by fans as being equivalent to having a soulmate.

Of course, all of this is just ambiguous enough that it can be denied. So, is spirk canon?

I’ve seen a lot of behind the scenes Star Trek photos.  Seriously.  I’ve likely seen more than any Trekkie outside of the Paramount/CBS staff.  And let me tell you, there are few cooler shots than this one of Leonard Nimoy demonstrating proper Vulcan nerve pinch technique to DeForest Kelley.

holding out hope that the man you love will someday return his feelings for you vs newly-found hope upon discovering that the man you love has the potential to love you back (because he does experience those feelings)
