Stra-Tek's list of must-see STAR TREK fan films!
(in no particular order)
Star Trek: Of Gods and Men
Imagine if SyFy channel got the rights to make Star Trek and did a movie with every available and affordable Trek actor they could get hold of during their low-budget mockbuster phase. This brings back so many Trek actors, some as their characters and some as new ones. More callbacks than your average Lower Decks episode and some are deep cuts (recognise Uhura's husband?) Clunky as hell but full of heart. Nostalgia overload, and my favourite fan film.
Star Trek: Renegades
The follow-up to Of Gods and Men skipped from the late 23rd century to the late 24th. Set in 2388 it was intended as a pilot for a fan-funded web series. Alexa Singh and her band of misfits are recruited by Admiral Chekov for a secret mission.
Renegades: The Requiem
Following the Axanar lawsuit (and Renegades was doing similarly-dodgy bootleg Trek merchandising), Renegades VERY hastily (as in, on day two of filming) scrubbed all Star Trek references for their follow-up/tie-up episode. Admiral Chekov became "The Admiral", Tuvok became a human named Kovok. The Andorian character lost her antennae. Uhura became Jemison. The Federation became the Confederation and Section 31 became Sector 6 - all while continuing the storyline from the previous, Star Trek-set adventure.
Star Trek: Horizon
Set during the era of Star Trek: Enterprise and mostly using green screens (very well disguised with JJ Abrams Star Trek '09-style lens flares and shaky cam), a new cast of characters on board the Discovery NX-05 are sent across time and space during the Earth/Romulan war. Ties in with the Iconians, Future Guy and manages action scenes with very little budget. The Axanar drama scuppered the planned sequel, and the creator has gone on to original projects.
Star Trek: First Frontier
Extremely clunky but charming, this is the first voyage of the USS Enterprise under Captain Robert April (who is now an American unlike the British accented James Doohan-voiced character in The Animated Series' "The Counter Clock Incident")
Star Trek: Continues
Star Trek Continues is an entire 4th season of The Original Series. The storytelling and presentation is very authentic to the original show with a few exceptions: a new ship's counsellor character played by the Captain's then-girlfriend, and that almost all episodes are sequels to TOS stories which almost never happened in the classic show. Scotty is played by Chis Doohan, son of James who played Scotty in TOS. Sulu is the late Grant Imahara of Mythbusters fame. Lots of familiar faces show up. Sadly tainted by Vic Mignoga's real life scandals, but *if* you can look past that, well worth watching. The link above is my favourite episode, the "Mirror, Mirror" sequel.
Star Trek New Voyages/Phase II
The grandfather of modern fan films. Some episodes are well worth watching, others not so much. It went from a group of friends having a LARP to semi-professional episodes with so much behind the scenes drama someone could probably write a book about one day. "To Serve All My Days" and "World Enough and Time" are their best episodes.
James Cawley's sets are now the Official Star Trek Set Tour in Ticonderoga, NY.
This list is uncomplete, there are LOTS more awesome fanfilms out there!
Dishonourable Unmention:
Axanar. Here is why.
Re: NuTrek being canon not affecting anyone's enjoyment of the Trekverse. There's the school of thought that suggests these shows being canon means that future shows will follow their model instead of what we could call "purist Trek". If all future shows are made in NuTrek's image, then the people who don't like it will probably never have another new Trek series to enjoy again. I think that's pretty sad that a franchise can sideline the majority of the fans that came before in favour of courting new fans. Like when the SciFi Channel rebranded to SyFy in order to shed its "nerdy" image, and in the process gave the middle finger to the fans who had essentially built the channel in the first place. I hope there will be more shows in the future that follow the formula/ethos of the older shows, but I'm not holding out much hope. The era of OldTrek is well and truly over, I think.
Change is inevitable, outside of obscure fan stuff like Star Trek Continues (sadly tainted by what we now know about it's lead) they're never going to make more TV in the exact style of the 1960's or 1990's. Television is different, our attitudes are different, the way stories are told in the medium has changed. Strange New Worlds is the modern, bug budget attempt at making more TOS, with the old planet-of-the-week formula. Time will tell if it'll make fans happy, but it should be a nice change of pace after 6 years of season-long arc Trek.
I also dispute that "the majority of fans" have been sidelined in favour of those who enjoy the new. Some have of course, but is it any different to the TOS fans who hated Next Gen when it came along? I sometimes wonder what those fans thought of subsequent series' and movies that came along.
I am a TNG baby and when the Discovery era of Trek started airing I was grumpy. It looked different! It was too dark! The ship was weird! Why did the Klingons look like that? Why do they have holograms? It wasn't what I was used to!
I could have just turned it off. I could have just kept enjoying what I already had and that'd have been fine. It's okay to only like a specific era of a franchise that's been running for six decades! Hell, I still only like the original Star Wars trilogy and a few of the subsequent one-off projects!
But. I love Trek so very deeply, I dug in my teeth and held on for dear life. And it felt weird and uncomfortable for a bit. But also... I found I didn't hate it. It was very different and sometimes I didn't like how they did things, but over all I became deeply invested in this new era of Trek. And looking back, I realized I had a lot of similar issues with previous series when they aired. I hated that Voyager's interior had a different look, darker and more drab. It felt like a military vessel in comparison to the elegance of the D. I hated DS9 when it came out, too. What? They're just... Sitting on a station? Where's the star trekking in this Star Trek?
Huh. Maybe I didn't dislike the new era. Maybe I just was uncomfortable with it clashing with my nostalgia.
So I stopped wanting it to be what I expected from Trek. I asked it to show me people who center on Hope and Love and then take me to strange new places. I want Trek to make me uncomfortable sometimes. It should make me uncomfortable! Not just with topics but everything about it!
And maybe future projects won't be "for" me. Picard certainly wasn't. Section 31 might not be, either. But I gave Picard the chance. I'll give S31 the same. Maybe it'll hit, maybe it won't for me.
That's okay. It'll still be Trek. It will still find an audience. It doesn't have to be about me. Star Trek is a buffet, and I'm excited to see what they bring out next.
I remember the huge amount of hate that DS9 used to get for not being real Star Trek. They didn't fly around! It was about war and religion! How terrible

Finally Season 4 teaser! Sadly no direct Spocklaan bits in this trailer but still some good crumbs to chew on until summer!
DINOSAURS IN SPACE! I repeat, we get DINOSAURS IN SPACE!!! 🦖
Reminds me a bit about the Doctor Who episode with dinosaurs in space, so maybe another hint at a coming crossover?
Also remember my SNW x Terra Nova crossover idea? Did I manifest something again? It would actually be fun if those dinosaurs turn out related to the story of the Voth from Voyager.
Cowboy La'an!!! This gives me Firefly vibes and I'm here for some good western in space!!! I'm very curious to find out if Christina could already ride or if she had to learn it for this episode.
Also Outlaw La'an x Barkeeper Spock AU anyone??!!
(maybe someone really stalked my tumblr for ideas 🤣)
Pike's Angels!!! Love seeing Una, La'an and Erica going on a mission together (could be the same episode as the dinosaur one).
(is that a space ship? could that be the aliens that took the ancestors of the Voth to the Delta Quadrant?)
La'an seeing dead people!! Could be the same episode with her talking to Uhura about their last mission. I would be worried about this line as foreshadowing if we didn't know Christina filmed s5 as well, but who knows.
It would be interesting if La'an being haunted by ghosts would somehow tie to her dead family (still holding on hope that Manu turns out to be alive against the odds). Could be a callback to Memento Mori (when La'an already envisioned Manu on the bridge, remember?) and fingers crossed that we'll get another Spocklaan mind meld/katra space scene!
Spock crawling outside the hull at high speed! Michael would be proud!
I don't really care for the Sp*ik, the Kirk push to the center was to be expected (noticed how Una did not have one solo scene or audio line in the teaser, because I did 😒), but this hug looks so awkward and the episode still makes it even more obvious that this scene is most likely not what it seems (I had the same feeling about the Spock and Chapel bits back in the s3 teaser and see how Wedding Bell Blues turned out).
But if they give this, then they better also give Spocklaan its deserved focus! Fanservice for all!!!
I've seen people saying the new Vulcan officer could be related to T'Pol and I can see that and it would be an awesome tribute to Enterprise, but honestly my first thought seeing her in that red shirt was "Time travelling future Spocklaan daughter!!!" (remember the ad during s3 where the parents were dressed as Spocklaan? so maybe foreshadowing?)
Did any of you notice the Nausicaans playing darts in the background?
S4 E16 Bar Association
Quark: Doesn't that hurt?
Brunt: I'm sure it does. Most Nausicaan games do. Speaking of pain - did you talk to your brother?
Fun fact, those aren't just any background actors; They're James Lomas and Shawn McConnell, real professional darts players who also worked as "dart advisors" on DS9! McConnell even went on to become a professional stuntman in things like Daredevil (2003) and True Detective.
Moral of the story: It's always a worth it to hire highly skilled pros just to have them perform their job as incorrectly as possible, For The Bit™
I am stupidly proud of this bit.
(Also... I'm pretty sure the way we did this was to have the pro dart players throw actual darts at each other and hit corkboards built into their costumes. God bless those guys.)
