Anthropomorphic: Animal depicted with human like personalities (i.e. Walking on two legs, talking like people, and using human technology.)

Furries: A fandom group dedicated to drawing, conventionising, and even dressing up like these anthropomorphic animals.

Furries: Judged, laughed at, and somewhat hated by society.

What’s the problem with Furries? Why are they socially unaccepted by non-Furries? Could it be the stereotypes put in place for them? That’s it. That’s the main problem. The most well-known stereotypes for the furry fandom is sexualizing these animals/creatures. 

I’m going to try to make a convincing argument in favor of the Furries. Now I myself am not a Furry, I am a Christian male, not in anyway gay, but the questions nags me. Why do people hate the Furry Fandom so much?

Some Stereotypes put on the Furry fandom

• Pretty much all Furries are gay

• All Furries want to do is frick-frack-diddily-whack with other animals

• These Furries like 18+ fan art (quote un-quote “Furry Porn”)

• Furries are “Weird and gross” dressing up in full body costumes.

STATEMENT #1: Studies have shown that really only 21% of Furries actually are gay, and 32% are straight, while 45% are “Other”. Such a small percentile, and honestly why should you care if someone’s gay?

STATEMENT #2: This stereotype is completely out of whack and entirely false. I believe that this was put in place by the next stereotype.

STATEMENT #3: Ok sure some part of the Furry fandom does like to jack off to more mature art, but this is definitely not the entire fandom. Furries Sexually attracted to these fan arts and actual Disney drawn anthropomorphics make up only 37% of the fandom. While the other 62% feels neutral or no sexual attraction. I actually think that Furry fan art can be pretty incredibly drawn.

FINAL STATEMENT: I actually think that the fursuits are kind of neat. People get to design how they want to look, and pretty much every fursuit is unique. I’ve also noticed that a lot of Furries feel much more shy and non-social with their costumes off. But as soon as their suit goes on, BAM, the person can be much more comfortable interacting with strangers, but not really strangers, because that person you’re talking with might be just as socially awkward as you, yet you’re sharing in a common interest. That’s the cool part I find about Furries. Nobody cares what you’re like. 

In a few interviews Furries actually say that the fursuit represents your “fursonality”. Your fursonality is really just a chance to show off personalities you wish you actually had. For example, let’s say John is shy and quiet, does not like to dance in front of other people. John puts on his fursuit and becomes Rup the outgoing wolf who loves to dance. In my opinion, it’s really a beautiful thing.

What I think went wrong with these stereotypes is that a few Furries happened to act in such a way, publicly displayed, and so everyone thought Furry as “Weird, Gay, Gross” when really they’re just people trying to escape reality for a bit, be something they wish they were like, and come together to share a common interest. 

Let me play this out for you. So a handful (really a small percent) of Christians, do some bad things (maybe steal). Because of the way word travels these days, everyone sees that this small percentile of Christians stole; they don’t see the big picture.  So now, every time someone thinks of Christians, they think of a bad group of people. I feel in this sense Furries are misunderstood. Nobody sees Furries for how they actually are. I see them as a very welcoming, loving group of people who set up conventions to get together and dress up and nobody judges you. I’ve seen several Furry conventions and in all honesty they look like people are having a blast. Everyone gets along, gay or not, people young and old, man or woman. 

So I implore you, please do your research before judging a group of people that society has imprinted on them. I know most people don’t even know what the Furry fandom’s about. They just listen to society, and go along with the crowd because nobody’s goddamn brave enough to make a stand! Please take my advice, be different, take a stand, if you still don’t like the Furries, then keep it to your own damn self. Nobody has to know that you have a problem with them.
