the point of this post was to compare the growth of a side m/m pairing based mainly on “subtext” and one interaction over the period of a few months compared to the fandom’s most popular f/f pairing that is comprised of two main characters with a lot of interactions and focus from the main narrative that has been a “thing” for several years

no, no one can make people ship anything, but i think it’s worth making these comparisons and thinking about them

you can’t bring out the “it’s the NSFW fic making Spamtenna seem more popular” thing anymore, if you hit the “hide nsfw option” on AO3 now, as of December 2025, there’s still more Spamtenna than Suselle fic lol

if someone says “isn’t it kind of crazy that it took three months for this new ship made of two male characters with one on-screen interaction (in which one thought the other was a rat) to completely eclipse the fandom’s most popular ship considering of two female characters with several years of buildup” and your response is “so you want us to write smut of MINORS? so you want to see NSFW of TEENAGE GIRLS?” you are: a scumbag

because like- when you get small enough, even for say a monster high doll- fabric in most cases will not lay like it does on a person scale. i made a circle skirt for a frankie once and i had to do extra sneaky stitches too get it to sit down right which i highly doubt borrowers are doing.

and borrowers i've seen people are not monster high tall! they're more in the realm of like- equestria girl mini dolls or like the shoppie minis, sans Big Head. they fit in your palm so the margins are even thinner and the fabric even stiffer. at that scale ever stitch and every little fold adds bulk bulk bulk. and god forbid any fraying of fabric!

HP Fandom isn't just a problem because of the direct financial support. It also continues to infuse the IP, and JKR as a result, with cultural capital and social influence. It gives jkr a cultural relevance that means her words are platformed more seriously and more widely than other authors whose works are not infused with this level of sustained popularity. She has said, very plainly, that she (and the people who will fund her future projects) views ALL Fandom action as support.
