Its britney bitch

As I had not read the book or done much research I was lucky enough to go into this movie kinda blind, I knew very little about the plot besides the fact that it involved Ryan Gosling, space, and a cute alien named Rocky. That and enough clips from beginnings of fan edits convinced me to drag one of my friends to the local movie theatre to go see it. And glad I’m happy I did.

First thoughts, it was just overall a very cute movie. I have no other words for it. From Rocky and Grace’s little relationship to Grace’s awkward bumbling to the cute little gestures we learn from the Enrid language. It was just constantly a movie making me smile and beam and laugh (in between tears if course)

Seeing Ryan Gosling play clumsy and awkward Dr. Ryland Grace was such a blessing. The way we get such a clear vibes of his character from so quick his opening classroom scene is perfect, we see him stumble over himself and trip on his words but we also see him make meaningful connections with his students and break down complicated topics with easy to understand words. We see how this transcends all his relationships when he interacts with Carl, the other scientists, and eventually Rocky. I also want to point out how quick he is to give credit to other people (the Carl hypothesis and letting a rocky name the planet) and how slow he is to take his credit when he deserves it. And this is what makes the ending, of him sacrificing himself to go save Rocky and then become a teacher on his plane to make such perfect sense.

Rocky himself is SO much better than my brain could have imagined. Watching him slowly learn how to communicate with Grace was the highlight of the movie. The “they think I’m stupid” line is absolutely hilarious and one of my favorite lines from the movie. Then we go from that to watching him build Grace a suitable microclimate so they can get closer together. We watch them both put so much work into understanding each other and where they come from. At the beginning their only way of communication is by a tap of the glass. And we get to see in real time translation happening and then invent way to exist in each others space and then have to learn to existing each others space. They get to share about their lives back home with each other. And that is one of the things that made this movie so special.

And then the cinematography is unmatched.

The way they creatively use just an actors physical skills to betray deep emotions by overlaying the actor/actress with silence or simply music was a chiefs kiss. And something that requires very talented actors and they were able to execute it perfectly. It was able to be both sadness and anger and everything in-between. All betrayed by just facial expressions and actions

And every scene of space was straight out of national geographic. The pink illuminated peteova lines, the scenes of the spaceships floating together, the colorful planets, ugh it was perfect and In so glad I got to see it on the big screen.
