Drawing For Animation Assessment 2

- A 8-10 drawing animated sequence of a suitcase metamorphosing into another form. THOUGHTS: - I decided to stick with 8 panels again to create this animated sequence/animated gif. - It took me a while to figure out what to do with it. I understood that I had to get a suitcase and metamorphosis it into another form/something else. But I just couldn't figure out what suitcase I wanted and what to change it to. In the end, I picked a suitcase and then tried to decide from there. I tried a few times with this activity, erasing the ones that did't quite work. For example, I thought that with this suitcase shape I could maybe make a robot but that didn't work and breifly I thought I could make Spongebob Squarepants with it but that also proved to be difficult. Somehow I ended up turning the suitcase into a lady beetle. It seemed to work the best and more smoother than any of the other trials I did. I think I might had done the metamorphosis a bit wrong, probably with losing lines or the sort, but it does have a certain flow to it and the gif seems to be smooth and transition nicely so I guess it is okay. In fact, I like the finished gif quite a lot. - Either way, this task ended up being as fun as the others. Though the process was a little frustrating and I found myself spending a lot of time trying to get it to work, in the end the frames and gif are pretty nice. - These were drawn with pencil and eraser on normal paper.

-- An exploded diagram, which clearly articulates the key character and functions of a particular suitcase. THOUGHTS: - This task utterly confused me for a very long time. Mosty because I was debating whether to use a different suitcase or 'Satan's suitcase'. After many trials and much erasing, I decided to just stick with Satan's suitcase. This didn't quite help much though, because I was then stuck trying to figure out how to even create the diagram. I ended up creating the above, and I hope that this is what the task was asking. I did my best to take apart the suitcase so that each part can be examined. I have written notes for each part as well, though they are brief. Basically, the spikes and such are decoration that comes with the suitcase. The spikes are made of an otherwordly material and thus they shine with a strange coat and have hellish properties. This should not be surprising seeing as the suitcase belongs to Satan himself. The material may be 'Hell Rock' or something like it. The dot patterns are part of the actual body of the suitcase and the eyeball on the suitcase isn't just a pattern; it is an actual, alive eyeball that moves and can blink its eye. Yet again, this is not unusual for Satan. I also then had to draw what was inside his suitcase, and I had trouble trying to figure out what exactly Satan would pack. What would he pack in a suitcase on his way to see God? It was honestly something I had to think about; and it produced many funny results. In the end though, I decided to draw a variety of weapons... because in all honesty a whole variety of cool weapons would probably be what Satan would pack in a demonic suitcase if he went on a trip. Especially one to see his rival, God. The weapons were fun to draw and so was the exploded diagram, even though the perspectives were really hard to get right. I still think there are some things odd about the perspective, however, I'm really happy with the way I drew those weapons. The exploded diagram turned out better than I thought it would as well, considering I had no idea about how to start it. I also found this fun since I was debating about Satan and his suitcase of all things, which made the task fun to complete. In fact, the Satan concept is proving to be fun and this activity as well. These were drawn with a pencil, eraser and a ruler on normal paper.

- This one took a while to do because I wasn't quite sure how to start it and make it work the way I wanted it to. I also had to make sure it was interesting by using aspects such as exciting angles, perspective, playing with the horizon line, etcetera. It took me a couple of trials to get it right, though I do feel some of the perspectives may be awkward because I began to confuse myself somewhere toward the end. Either way, it was pretty interesting playing around with perspective like that rather than flat, straight on perspective. I think some of the frames look really good, and I did try to fix up some of the other ones that were a bit off but couldn't get them any better than that it seems. It was good practice though. I also decided to use the idea I created with my concept map. So, the storyboard above shows who appears to be Satan with his satanic, demonly decorated suitcase. I had a lot of fun designing that suitcase and basically knew what I wanted it to look like. The first image above was just variations I drew while brainstorming the suitcase. Either way, I used the less spikey version for Satan and his journey. Satan took off from the palace and began his journey; and following the concept map, he goes to the gate, passes it and makes his way towards the Enchanted Forest where God is. The last panel shows the Enchanted Forest way off into the distance to hint that he still has a journey ahead of him and to hint that the forest is definitely his final destination. I thought it would be a fitting end to the storyboard. Overall, it was a nice task to complete. I probably spent a bit too much time on it and added more detail than needed, considering its supposed to be just a story board. However, the sketches are still quite rough and either way, it was a fun activity. Lastly, Satan is a demon but in this he has a human-like figure and so this storyboard concept shows his journey with his suitcase.

-4 x hand-drawn images of the suitcase in different social and transit settings. THOUGHTS: - I wasn't quite sure whether there had to be people in each image or whether it could just be a suitcase by itself, etcetera. So I decided to do a couple more than 4. The first page is the first four I did; hand drawn images of a suitcase in different social and transit settings. The ones used were a bus stop, trainstation, and airport. Then I drew three more images, one where the suitcase is all by itself and two others which are displaying situations. One is looking for a friend with his suitcase following him, while the other figure is hailing a bus to stop it so that they can get on with their luggage. The task was overly interesting. In fact, it was entertaining trying to draw different types of suitcases in different ways, especially since I was trying to give them nice angles and perspective; just for the sake of practice.

-A visual concept map or time-line, which integrates a sequence of hand-drawn images that constitue a narrative. The map will detail a suitcase's imaginary journey. THOUGHTS: - This task was nice and easy. I had fun creating a time-line and a couple of concept maps. Firstly, the timeline was just to plan out the whole idea so that I knew exactly how it would start and end. I then drew a quick concept map to accompany that timeline. A then drew another concept map that was more specific/focused on a specific aspect of the whole imaginary journey. Just as the task asks, I created these timeline/concept maps with hand-drawn images to show the sequence of events. A picture of 'Hell' is shown, to show the fact that it starts in Hell, and then a picture of a bridge that leads the journey to its next destination is shown, etc. The concept map thus shows the sequence nicely. I think the concept map, especially the second one I made, shows the narrative that revolves around the suitcase's imaginary journey. The suitcase, or more importantly, Satan's suitcase goes on a journey since Satan himself is on one. The concept map is coloured to make it more visually appealing but also to help understand what is what. The purple is the start where Satan and his suitcase begin their journey. The concept map then goes through each other destination; the walk to Hell's gate, walking onto the bridge that connects Hell to Heaven and finally making his way to the 'Enchanted Forest' where he will meet with God for a meeting, etc. I am actually pretty happy with these, since they seem to show this narrative that he and his suitcase takes. There are also a couple of notes written with the images that should help tell the story. Overall, this was a fun task and I liked how creative I could be with it.

Week 10: (they wouldn't darken in photoshop, so the lines are faint. please click the images to see them better). - Life Drawings These were the life drawings that were drawn during class. The main prop of the lesson was a suitcase prop. The poses were based around this prop. Some of the drawings were drawn with the figure sitting/standing in the suitcase or around the suitcase, while others had the figure holding a suitcase in a sort of setting (for example, 'waiting at the airport'.) The drawings were drawn with pencils and charcoal on different types of paper. The durations of drawings changed as well, from 1 minute to 5 minutes and so on. I also changed hands quite a lot during this exercise; using my right hand for some drawings and then my left hand for other drawings. Additionally, some drawings where drawn without looking at the page and some were drawn with two hands at the same time. I also practiced shading and tone again in some of the images.

Week 10: (please click the images to see them better) Task #2: - Using to of your life drawing images and an inanimate object of your choice, develop an illustration, comprised of nine overlapping drawings. Convey the transformations of one life drawing image into an object, which in turn transforms into the second life drawing image. In each case, attempt to illustrate sequential change from the first drawing through to the last. Thoughts on the task: - This was drawn on paper with a pencil and an eraser. - I wasn't too sure what it meant by overlapping images and so I drew each in their own box. This was for the best as it made the gif easier to make. - It took me a long time trying to figure out how to do this. I changed the inanimate object and the life drawings I chose alot and kept on trying until I could get something that would work. I had decided to go with just 9 frames which made it more challenging. In hindsight, adding more frames would have given it a more fluid sequential change. Either way, it looks much better than I initially thought it would turn out to be. Especially because the task took me a long time to do and I honestly wasn't quite sure if certain lines were correct. The activity was fun anyway and the gif was fun to make since I could see the transformation properly. I think the gif actually makes it look better and smoother which was nice. -The first panel and last panel are the life drawings I chose and the middle panel, panel 5, was the pumpkin (inanimate object); though the pumpking may look a bit abstract.

Week 10: (click images to see them better) Task #1: - Develop the missing drawings in the pear panel sheet. Illustrate the sequential change in the images between drawing 1 and 5. Female figure --> transform into --> pear. Make this a gif. Thoughts on this task: - This was a very interesting task to do. It was fun trying to figure out how to get the first shape to transform into the last shape fluidly without big gaps in each frame. More specifically, making sure each frame has equal transformation was quite difficult to achieve. I think my final results are pretty good compared to the first trial I did; alhough there might be some lines that were lost along the way because I became uncertain where I could put them. Either way, I used the five frames to create the gif file seen above. The gif is slow enough to see each image but fast enough that the transformation can be seen. I think it looks quite nice since the gif really shows how the figure turns into the pear.

A lot of the images practice perspective, while some others were life drawings with props; a long stick/pole object was the prop. The last few images practiced poses and posture and the last two pictures had a book/newspaper as a prop. The last images also focused on pannelling/storyboarding. The last image in particular was my practice/experimenting with panels and just drawing certain parts of the body rather than the whole figure. There were different duration times for the drawings, from 1 minute to 5 minutes, etc. I also moved around a lot; from standing on tables to be higher up or sitting down on the floor to get a different angle. I think most of these were drawin right handed. I also pracited shading once again in a couple images.

Week 9: (click images to see them better please) -Life Drawings These are some of the life drawings that were drawn during class. I really liked the figures where the girl is looking in her hands like she has an insect there. I was initially going to redraw these and draw a butterfly with them. I was going to make them into a gif as well. I thought it would look nice and be a good extra to add to this blog. Unfortunately, I never found the time to do this. If I find time after everything is posted and done, I think I might make this gif. The images were really helpful though. The newspaper figures (they were skethy drawings but they are supposed to be newspapers) were exceptionally useful. I used those figures for reference while I drew the story board for task 1. I had to distort some of the life drawings I used in the story board though, because I was trying to give them angles and perspective. Either way, these figures helped inspire the story board and helped me draw them. These were drawn on paper with pencils and charcoal pencils. Most of the images were 1 minute drawings as well. Additionally, a couple of them were drawn while sitting at a desk, while others were drawn sitting on the floor and looking up, or standing on the table and looking from that perspective. This was to try different angles while drawing, and to get different perspectives and dynamics.

In the narrative, there is a human figure and a small insect. 'Conflict' was a plot possibility I used, and that was because it seemed to suit the situation perfectly; especially because this is a fighting sequence between both characters and thus there will be conflict. At first, I started with a lady beetle but that didn't look right for what I wanted. I then tried a horned beetle and also a bee and that similarly did not work. Consequently, I ended up choosing a cockroach as I thought it would work with a couple of the life drawings I did in class. However, I found it quite the insect harder to draw than I thought it would be and so it somewhat doesn't look like a cockcroach in a lot of the panels... The story is that a lady finds a cockroach on her wooden floors. The first panel is an over the shoulder shot showing her looking down at the cockroach. In her right hand is supposed to be a newspaper. Once again, it doesn't really look like newspaper at all. I definitely had a hard time trying to get it to work with angles and folds and so the newspaper drawings ending up really sketchy and abstract. Either way, the story goes on with her watching it crawl accross the floor and in panel 3, she grips it to get read to slam it down. Panel 4 shows the newspaper slamming against the floor and that the cockroach began flying as a reaction. Panel 5 shows the lady looking up at where the cockroach lands on the wall. The next few panels are her getting up and slamming the newspaper again in another attempt to kill it. The cockroach dodges it once more, before crawling away and finally, flying off the wall towards the window. The 12 panel shows the lady watching the insect fly out of the window. That is how the narrative ends. Therefore, that is what happens in the narrative. I tried to space the visual images evenly throughout each panels as best as I could. I think I have done quite well as I haven't skipped to many details that would cause gaps in time or any confusion, etcetera. (for example, the newspaper has stayed in the same hand in each panel and this is logical and so it doesn't create any problems storywise, etc.) This was drawn with pencils and mechanical pencils on normal paper. Overall, it was a challenging task.
