Makeup tips for my BFRB babes

IF YOU HAVE DERMATILLOMANIA, YOU ARE ATTRACTIVE AS HELL. i don’t care care how many scabs or scars you have. i don’t care if your entire body looks like a fucking pepperoni pizza (and if it does, don’t freak out, mine does too). YOU LOOK JUST FINE. you don’t need to use makeup. you don’t need to cover up. your skin does its job, and that’s enough. IF SOMEONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR APPEARANCE, DIRECT THEM TO THE NEAREST TRASH CAN.

These save me so much time in the morning. Before I discovered them, I would have to meticulously pencil my brows on every day just to feel normal enough to leave the house. By contrast, I can keep the fake ones on for about three days at a time, and gluing them in place takes only a few minutes with a bit of practice.

Most of these ingredients do help your skin, but for some reason people take that to mean, “I should recommend people use this straight without thinking about dilution and other ingredients”. So here is a short list of some common ingredients that, while they may help, might also be causing you other problems if you’re using them improperly. Be smart, people!

Bicarb soda - SO BAD. ruins skins acidity so makes it vulnerable to bacteria, and strips skin of oils. DO NOT USE. 

Apple cider vinegar - if you’re going to use this, PLEASE GOD use it highly diluted. Chemical burns, people! I’ve seen people recommend using it straight and I almost fainted. 

Peppermint/anything with menthol - sensitising, can burn, not fun

Lemon & citrus in general - sensitising, irritating, causes photosensitivity and may cause hyperpigmentation

Yarrow extract -  sensitivity and photosensitivity

Cinnamon - sensitising, can cause irritation

Walnut shell - sharp edges, can cause microscopic tears and irritate skin, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND

Apricot kernel -  rough and irregular edges, can cause microscopic tears and irritate skin

Tea tree oil - sensitising, can burn, okay in small amounts (ie DILUTED)

I’ve tried my best to think of an effective skincare routine that would be also affordable. This is just a post to help out and give you some ideas. These are some of the things I did/learned from living in poverty.

 -A short one-product routine: The least you can do to maintain healthy skin is cleansing and moisturizing. For this combined you could use just one product: safflower oil. it’s the most affordable I could find; 16 ounces for $7 on amazon (for scale, 30ml lasted me for 2 months to moisturise with) It contains omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, vitamin E, and a high concentration of linoleic acid. Making it very beneficial for the skin. You can oil cleanse with it, oil cleansing will remove all your makeup and has a slight exfoliating effect, removing some dead skin and hardened sebum. I prefer oil cleansing over a regular cleanser because it doesnt strip your moisture barrier as most inexpensive cleansers will. Safflower oil is also a good moisturiser as it absorbs quickly, NOT leaving you with a greasy face. Thats why its also suitable for oily skin and acne prone skin as it has the comedogenic rating of 0!! Other oils good for this but more expensive: Argan and hempseed. 

-Vaseline: If you have dry patches this could save your life. Vaseline acts like a piece of foil over your skin, put in on after moisturizing to prevent the moisture from leaving. Its especially beneficial when living in harsh temperatures. - 

-Toner: Green tea ($2 for a box of 24 tea bags) is good at combating acne and soothing redness as a toner. I havent found spot on scientific evidence for this but theres plenty anectodal evidence. Using it on a cottonpad will also give you an exfoliating effect. Its very rich in antioxidants, thats why you should be drinking it as well. Its found that drinking GT can also reduce inflammation. It also appears to balance hormones, whose imbalance causes acne. And balances out or lowers insulin levels.

 -Acne treatments: Acne has many different causes and finding something that works for you might be a chore. These are just a few things that may help. Many people have had great results using neem oil (6oz 7$) to combat (cystic) acne. Just be careful; it smells bad, but its an effective spot treatment and a good substitute for tea tree oil which is more expensive. As research studies have shown neem oil effectively controls the harmful bacteria that cause the infection and reduces inflammation. Benzoyl peroxide 2.5%/5% 100ml for $3 Benzoyl peroxide has been the most effective acne treatment for me personally. if you struggle mainly with closed comedones and zits this is the treatment to get. Start with 2.5% as its a strong treatment. Apply it at night on areas where you break out.

 -More moisturisers: CeraVe PM is a cult favorite, its $13 dollars though and there are cheaper alternatives. I love to use argan oil (100 ml for $10) as a nighttime (and sometimes daytime) moisturiser, it leaves the skin smooth, soft and healthy. It has the comedogenicy rate of 0 too so its suitable for my acne prone skin. Its rich in fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamin E, making it a great anti aging product. Its not greasy and absorbs very quickly, giving you a healthy glow. Hempseed oil (24 oz for $16) would be more suitable for oily skin as it dries more than argan oil and has the same benefits. Studies have shown that hemp seed oil can dramatically decrease skin dryness and soothe itching and irritation. Both of these oils last long as hell as ive used up 50ml bottles of both in 5 months, with every day use.

-Exfoliants: For inexpensive exfoliation you tend to reach out to physical exfoliants, neglecting the fact that they cause more irritation and acne by micro tears. As an exfoliant I reccomend The Ordinary 5% Lactic Acid ($8) for a gentle exfoliantion. It gets you rid of blackheads and often also acne, fades acne scarring and gives you smooth skin and even skintone. This is pricier than other products on this list, but its much better than physical exfoliants, and its the cheapest out there probably. The Ordinary makes other inexpensive AMAZING products worth checking out. 

 -Body Care: Shea butter (16 oz 10$) and coconut oil (500 ml 6$) for me, work better than any other body butters I’ve ever tried. Dont use coconut oil on the face as its very pore clogging, but suitable for the body. I love to oil cleanse with CO sometimes and regularly moisturise my body with shea butter. 

i have that too theres some stuff that can help- clay masks bc u cant see ur face - sheet masks too honestly it helps a lot-h y d r o c o l l o i d s!!!!! a fucking life changer Also called blister patches, cosrx pimple band aids are a more expensive alternative but very daytime appropriate. Its so fucking good to put one over everything and 1. u cant see it and 2. its sucking the sebum out of your spot so whem u take it off yr whitehead is gone- spot treatments in general. I love zinc oxide pastes because it covers ur whole spot with white so u cant see it n trigger yourself- r/compulsiveskinpicking on reddit also helped a lot. A very nice supportive communitty.- taking progress pics so u can see how far uve come-dont step too close to the mirror dumb ass u know what its gonna result in. draw a line on ur tiles or smth just dont get too close.-also fucking hide your torture tools somewhere far or ideally throw them away. If u hide them u cant pick when dissociating because u will have to actively go look for them

Please don’t put lemon (or any citrus fruit) juice on your face! 🍋Lemon juice increases photosensitivity and can lead to chemical burns. There are safer alternatives, such as regulated AHAs for exfoliation or vitamin c serums for brightening.

BAKING SODA IS BAD FOR THE SKIN. I’m sorry, but it’s a fact. Your skin is acidic at a pH level of about 4.5. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is very alkaline at a pH of 9. Throwing off your skin pH like that is not good for you. Toothpaste has the same problem; plus toothpaste has a bunch of skin irritants in it’s formula.

Don’t use nose pore strips. They’re a huge gimmick. Those black dots on your nose are sebaceous filaments, not blackheads. Look it up. They’re natural and can be minimized through proper cleansing and BHAs. Pore strips can make your pores LARGER and also cause broken capillaries. I’d personally like to tell Biore to fuck off with their shame-based marketing.

Avoid hot showers/baths. 🛀  I know, it feels great! Unfortunately, the hot water strips your skin of its natural oils, leaving your skin dry and unhealthy. Also, if you feel lightheaded after a hot shower/bath, that means you’re dropping your blood pressure with the heat. Again, not good for you.

If a product burns your skin, DON’T USE IT. The burning does not mean it’s “working”. You can have a tingling effect from exfoliating products, but they should never burn.

Don’t over-exfoliate. I want to cry when people say they use scrubs every day! You should exfoliate physically 1-3x a week, depending on your skin. You can chemically exfoliate more frequently, but you still need to be careful. Raw, red, and flaky skin is not cute. 😡

Don’t use a bunch of new products at once. Patch test; it’s always worth it. It sucks when you wake up in the morning with a bunch of zits and irritation and you don’t know which one of the 5 new products you tried was the culprit.

STOP TANNING! ☀️️ Sun exposure is THE worst thing for your skin. Sun exposure accelerates aging and puts you at risk for skin cancer. Avoid excessive sunlight and wear sunscreen every day. 

Be wary of essential oils. Sensitive skin can be easily irritated by these seemingly natural ingredients. Natural is not always full-proof.

Don’t be aggressive towards your acne! BHAs and tea tree oil are great PREVENTATIVE ingredients. Once you have active acne, time (and AHAs) are the only thing that will make it go away. You can’t scrub it off, sorry.

Don’t pay a premium on anti-aging skin care.💰 Anti-aging is all in prevention. Stay hydrated, limit stress, don’t drink (to excess) or smoke, and use sunscreen. No cream will undo years of damage, even if it costs hundreds of dollars.

FAQ: Gentle cleansers I reccomend for every skin type.

First of all, let’s break down the notion that if your skin feels “squeeky clean” after cleansing it means it’s done a good job. Thats extremely false, if your cleanser makes your skin feel tight, shiny and dry as hell it’s damaging your moisture barrier and dehydrating your skin. This is why you should always use a gentle cleanser with mild surfectants.

Second of all, cleansing IS the most damaging part of your routine. It takes off all the oils and damages the lipid barrier of your skin. This is also why you should use a gentle cleanser and only cleanse with the soap at night. It’s also why your skin may look red and “worse than before” after you cleanse in the morning, it’s from irritation caused by removing the moisture and disrupting the lipid barrier.

A gentle cleanser is also definitely reccomended for acne prone, oily skin. If youre acne prone you DO NOT want to be harsh to your skin!!! Thats the most damaging myth to acne prone folks. You should especially then be gentle to your skin as more irritation WILL cause you more acne. (Nodular) acne is also often caused by a wrong cleanser, one with soudium lauryl sulfate, which you should avoid at all cost.

There ofourse are great cleasers that aren’t on this list. I tried to only metion the most accessible ones that will fit most budgets.

Avène extremely gentle cleanser lotion: definitely a great choice for those with dry sensitive skin. Will also take off your makeup well. It does contain some potential acne triggers, cetearyl alcohol and coco-glucoside. Not everyone who’s acne prone is also prone to this (in fact, a lot of people aren’t), but its worth mentioning before you make a mistake. ingredients: AVÈNE THERMAL SPRING WATER, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, SERINE, CETRIMONIUM BROMIDE, COCO-GLUCOSIDE, DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, DISODIUM EDTA, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, o-PHENYLPHENOL, SODIUM CETEARYL SULFATE, WATER.

La Roche Posay hydrating gentle cleanser: contains beneficial ingredients; a ceramide, niacinamide and panthenol. Wont strip your skin of moisture and contains glycerin as the second ingredient, which will rather attract water to your skin. ingredients:  AQUA / WATER / EAU (LA ROCHE-POSAY PREBIOTIC THERMAL WATER), GLYCERIN, PENTAERYTHRITYL TETRAETHYLHEXANOATE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, AMMONIUM POLYACRYLOYLDIMETHYL TAURATE, POLYSORBATE 60, CERAMIDE NP, NIACINAMIDE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, COCO-BETAINE, DISODIUM EDTA, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, PANTHENOL, T-BUTYL ALCOHOL, TOCOPHEROL

Garnier micellar water: Has been approved by many people with acne prone skin. It’s a very gentle cleanser that will also remove your makeup and wont dry you out at all. Ingredients: AQUA/WATER, HEXYLENE GLYCOL, GLYCERIN, DISODIUM COCOAMPHODIACETATE, DISODIUM EDTA, POLOXAMER 184, BIGUANIDE

CeraVe hydrating cleanser: An absolute cult favourite. Known for the beneficial ingredient list and the right Ph to be used on the skin. Might break you out if youre acne prone and sensitive. ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Behentrimonium Methosulfate/Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceramide 3, Ceramide 6-11, Ceramide 1, Hyaluronic Acid, Cholesterol, Polyoxyl 40 Stearate, Glyceryl Monostearate, Stearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 20, Potassium Phosphate, Dipotassium Phosphate, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Cetyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Phytosphingosine, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum

Netrogena ultra gentle hydrating cleanser: Great for dry skin as well because it only contains a very weak surfectant. Will remove your makeup well. Might break you out: cetearyl alcohol. ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Ethlhexylglycerin, Cetearyl Glucoside, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol

I created this blog because I feel the question “What is the reality of your BFRB?” is very important and I think about it a lot; many outsiders struggle to understand the severity of a BFRB disorder, quickly judging said compulsive actions as weird, ugly, or unusual.This means they’re quick to forget the emotional/physical reality and impact a BFRB disorder will have on a sufferer’s everyday life.

Those marks left behind from acne, whether they’re red, purple or brown, often all get put under the umbrella term of hyperpigmentation. When in fact there is different terminology and different things happening within your skin.

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is related to the brown spots or marks, not red/purple spots. The brown discolorations are caused by an excess production of melanin. Vitamin C, AHAs, Hydroquinone are all great tools for inhibiting melanin which will fade the brown discoloration, but it will not do anything for red or purple scarring. PIH is more common in darker skin types  although it is not limited to any skin type.

Post Inflammatory Erythema (PIE) PIE is in the process of becoming the new terminology used to describe pink to red discoloration after an inflammatory acne lesion. Patients with lighter skin types the postinflammatory dyspigmentation is often not hyperpigmentation, but instead discrete erythematous macules (PIE). Acne may not be the only cause of postinflammatory erythema, as any resolving inflammatory process may have residual erythema.

In my experience AHAs, vitamin C serums, nicinamide, and time are the best healers of PIE
