it really truly is insane the way in the end vegeta just got completely absorbed into the z-fighters catalogue like im sure by the time dbs rolls around gohan has mentally blocked out like 90% of the extremely traumatizing things that happened to him on namek but on the occasion something comes up that forces him to remember do you think he tries very very very hard not to think about all the absolutely horrific shit vegeta did before they ever even met him
im gonna be ill my gohan hes like five years old here and he knows they dont really have time to spare but he buried all of these people he never even knew thats so crazy fucked up he was literally five years old
The problem with Gohan ultimately isn't that Gohan is not suited to be the protagonist of Dragon Ball. It's that the way Dragon Ball stories are told are not suited to be the story of Gohan.
At its heart, Dragon Ball is about the journey of self-improvement. It's the story of one young boy's quest to understand martial arts, himself, and his place in the world and in the heavenly system of Buddhism. Its central mantra is about seeking to improve, to better one's self, purely for the sake of improvement and no other. It's rooted in the idea that even when you think you've made it to the top of the mountain, there is always another taller mountain just over the horizon.
For Goku, martial arts are the tool through which he improves himself. They're his passion. His drive. The center of his universe. Through martial arts, Goku builds relationships to others. Through martial arts, Goku refines himself not just physically but emotionally and spiritually. Through martial arts, Goku even achieves enlightenment.
But that's not Gohan's mountain. It's not his horizon. He's very strong. But martial arts aren't what matters to him.
This is what the start of the Buu arc seemed to grasp before it got cold feet and fell back on more familiar Goku-centric fare. To tell a story about Gohan that's true to the spirit of Dragon Ball, it would need to be about Gohan's journey into academia.
Education is, for Gohan, what martial arts are to Goku. A Gohan show wouldn't be about fighting. It'd be about learning. It'd be about Gohan discovering the world and building relationships through his pursuit of academia. Studying dinosaur biology and the Namekian ecosystem and trying to identify what ki really is from a scientific perspective. Interning at Capsule Corp to learn about shrinking tech.
And learning more about himself and his own curiosity in the process.
And it would be about romance. About learning how to have a stable and healthy relationship with another human being, despite a lack of positive role models in that area to draw from. It would be about Gohan having to surpass his flawed parents - As a boyfriend, as a husband, and ultimately as a father.
Those are Gohan's horizons. That is what his show would need to be about. But that's something that Dragon Ball, set in its ways and stubborn in its direction, simply isn't equipped to give him.
Which is a shame. Because it sounds like a very interesting story to me.
Bad Dad Goku? Nah.
Good Dad Goku? Nah.
Goku as a complicated man who lived a complicated life. Goku is the mountain that, learning from both his successes and his mistakes, Gohan must overcome on his journey to becoming the Greatest Dad in the Universe.

Survivor's guilt 🥲 (This is a redraw of this "comic" I drew 4 years ago!)
SOBS
A what if where Goku and Chichi are about to tie the knot but their wedding suddenly is interrupted by the fire and need to go and fix the furnace!
the thing about chichi teaching goten to fight but insisting on gohan focusing on his studies is that i don't think it's just a black and white case of "going easy on the second child" i think that if none of the world-ending shit had happened, chichi would've allowed goku to teach gohan when he got older. gohan is 3 or 4 (WHATEVER) at the beginning of the series okay i don't think it's unreasonable at all for her to be like Goku Our Literal Toddler Is Not Going To Fight Anything. Let Him Grow More First. but then all that world-ending shit did happen and her toddler was ripped away from her multiple times and kept coming back different every time and i think her pushing for him to focus on academia wasn't just because she wants him to have a good future or because she knows that he generally prefers academia to fighting (though these do absolutely factor in). i sort of theorize (and i'm straying into "musing" territory here) it's because by pushing him to study he becomes something closer to the little boy she lost. he becomes someone she recognizes and knows how to deal with instead of the child soldier who holds more power than she or anyone else knows what to do with.
and like i think this sort of mentality would've first sparked when she picked gohan up after the fight with vegeta and nappa and he was no longer reacting like he would've the last time she saw him (she says that he's safe now that he's with her but he already knows that she can't protect him from anything. he's stronger than her) and it was REALLY cemented when he yelled at her to shut up in the hospital. something that her sweet and shy little boy absolutely never would've done before. her son was back with her but she didn't know him at all and i do think that her being against him fighting is a part of her trying to pack all the wildness he picked up when piccolo kidnapped him into a box so he looks like her son again. and i don't think she's evil or anything for doing this i think she's a mother grieving her child who's doing her best. especially given that he keeps being sent out on the battlefield to suffer. she's only human. and part of the reason she's so lax with goten and even trains him herself is because he was never taken away from her—she never had to grieve him. there was the whole mess with buu but he never left her to become someone unrecognizable like gohan did. she raised him from start to finish in a time of peace. i REALLY think she would've helped goku train gohan when he got older if gohan had only grown up in a time of peace as well.

Drew some Gohan after a while 🍚
PICCOLO STOP AURA FARMING WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE
Best part of this is how the whole time while piccolo’s flying towards where Gohan is he’s in his head like “DONT DIE GOHAN IM COMING IM ON MY WAY TO RESCUE YOU IM NOT GONNA LET ANYONE TOUCH YOU KID” and then when he actually gets there he’s like [acting nonchalant] Good To See You Gohan [nonchalantly]
trying to just do more warmup drawings and been watching a bunch of dbz movies :)
What are your opinions on the other fusions?

The storyboard given to the animators really goes barebones with the intentions (as they should) but Vegeta's angry gremlin sketched face is KILLING ME.
Also Trunks' little ^v^ face and antennae to Vegeta's >:c scrunch... so cute
