i dont think usamericans rly understand how prevalent their culture is. english is taught in schools. we hear about usa news, watch usa shows and movies, know usa actors, read usa books, listen to usa music, have usa brands. i have a shirt somewhere with some usa flag motive from like 15 years ago. cant remember why i even have it. why were they even selling that in croatia. your books and culture are everywhere, you dominate social media, and then come on here whenever someone gives even a middle criticism and act like spoiled children because someone wants you to open an atlas
Partially related but a lot of usamericans also love to pull the whole "You just don't know how bad things are here. We have food deserts and a shitty education ststem and no opportunities for disadvantaged people and fascism and etc. etc." whenever you criticise them or say that they benefit from imperialism or anything like that.
1. We all know about the problems the US has. You guys dominate political discourse too. You can't take two steps in any political space on the internet without hearing about the socio-economic problems of the US.
2. Many countries have the same problems. Many countries have the same problems but worse. Many countries have the same problems plus a bunch of extra problems on top. In many cases due to something the US has done and continues to do to this day. You are not exceptional.
3. Having socio-economic problems does not stop you from benefiting from imperialism. It does not stop your country from being the imperial core. It does not stop your country from holding a cultural and economic hegemony over most of the planet. It also does not excuse you from thinking Egypt is in Eastern Europe. It does not excuse you from joining the US military or working for Raytheon or Lockheed Martin just because you're queer or whatever else.
august please be good to all the friends in my phone. thank you

I know this sounds like the deranged ramblings of a senile old man but I swear it used to be possible to look up information on the internet
Okay so this is a thing I can and often will do, and Iām physically disabled so you probably can lift a lot more than you think too
Look at her technique here, because thatās the key
Get low, back straight, let the legs do all the work with your and their center of gravity as close together as possible
Also has the benefit of if you gotta let āem drop they can just plop straight back to the ground on their feet
Iāve lifted people 3-4 times my size and scared the piss outta them it is a very good time, but you start small and slowly work your way up
(I also know the secrets of making it super hard to lift you in return which is extra fun at the ābet I can lift anyone who can lift meā cuz I am a medium-small lil pastel white bitch maybe slightly taller than she in the video we and I will heft a gym bro off the ground and then watch him fail to lift me cuz again technique and I am Unhelpful)

The Devils Hole is home to the endangered Devils Hole Pupfish.
From the National Park Service's page on Devils Hole: 'Devils Hole--a detached unit of Death Valley National Park--is habitat for the only naturally occurring population of the endangered Devils Hole Pupfish (Cyprinodon diabolis).'
The existence of the pupfish does prevent the pumping of groundwater in the area, after a legal battle. I am not sure this would apply to all mining.
From a High Country News article on the pupfish: 'The Cappaert case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, testing the power of the Antiquities Act and the weight of the new Endangered Species Act. In 1976, the High Court affirmed the federal governmentās right to maintain water levels sufficient to support the pupfish, even at the expense of water rights held by nearby ranchers.'
The habitat of this fish is incredibly small. However, it is slightly larger than suggested, as the fish swim at least 20m deep; the rock shelf referenced is the only place where the fish feed and spawn in the wild.
From the same National Park Service page: 'Although pupfish have been found as deep as 66 feet (20 m), the fish forage and spawn exclusively on a shallow rock shelf near the surface, feeding on the algae and diatoms found there.'
It is true that multiple conservation attempts have failed. Previous attempts to breed or crossbreed the fish have not been successful.
From a National Park Foundation article on the pupfish: 'Despite past efforts to create a similar artificial platform for the pupfish, as well as attempts to breed Devils Hole pupfish and hybrids in captivity, this small ledge remains the sole spawning and feeding shelf for the fish.'
I have not been able to find any references to 'assassination attempts'. One individual did threaten to pour pesticide into Devil's Hole, but it seems this was never attemped. If anyone can find anything on this, please let me know, but in the mean time I have to say this claim is unsubstantiated.
From a High Country News article on an incident of tresspassing and the pupfish: 'A Pahrump newspaper editor even threatened to throw the pesticide Rotenone into the sunken cave to āmake the pupfish a moot point.ā'
The fencing was initially installed after two people drowned, not after an assassination attempt. Later, more fencing and security was installed after three men drunkenly tresspassed and killed a pupfish.
From the same National Park Service page: 'Subsequently, the Hole was fenced after two divers drowned in its water.'
From a High Country News article on the incident of tresspassing : 'Since the incident, Devils Hole has become an even more formidable fortress. The Park Service capped its towering fences with additional barbed wire. The public can only view the sunken cave from a distance now, more than 20 feet above it. And inside the fenced viewing area are even more cameras, motion sensors and āNo Trespassingā signs.'
There is a breeding program at Ash Meadows Facility, where scientists have attempted to mimic the natural habitat of the pupfish.
From a National Geographic article on the breeding attempts: 'And when they built the Ash Meadows facility, the scientists tried to create a mirror image of Devilās Hole, which meant bringing in water, substrate, and algae from the natural environment.'
It is possible that a different research/breeding facility is being referred to, but the Ash Meadows Facility does not seem to have a secret location. In fact, the facility is open to visitors, according to their website.
I wont attempt to fact check whether the cave is haunted, but I can confirm that at least two people drowned and were not recovered from Devils Hole. Whilst the cave is not truly bottomless, the bottom has not yet been found.
From an SFGATE article on Devils Hole: 'When the bottom of Devils Hole is one day found, the skeletons of two brothers-in-law may finally be recovered, fathoms below the frolicking pupfish.'
The breeding program has been more successful in recent years. This may be due to the discovery that diving beetles were eating the eggs and larvae, and the beetle population in the artificial environment being controlled. (This fact was not included in the original post, but I thought it was cool.)
From a National Geographic article on the breeding attempts: 'As Feuerbacher watched the infrared footage, which can visualize objects in the dark, a tiny pupfish larva smaller than a peppercorn flitted into the cameraās frame. This was big news. When a population gets as low as that of the pupfish, every animalāwild or captive, larva or adultāis critical to the speciesā survival.
āI was pretty excited to see there was reproduction going on in the tank, and I just watched it for a little bit,ā says Feuerbacher, a fish biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. āThen I saw a beetle swim past.ā
It began circling the fish, and closing in.
āThen it just dove in and basically tore the fish in half right while I was watching,ā says Feuerbacher.
[...]
During the first beetle collection, facility manager Jennifer Gumm says they caught 500 beetles in three hours. And on the very next pupfish egg collection, which is done by leaving out pieces of carpet that the fish like to lay their eggs on, the team retrieved close to 40 pupfish eggs.
Before this, they had been lucky to find four or five pupfish eggs during a refuge collection. Usually, it was zero.'

do yāall remember that short story where a scientist like, raises his daughter with no contact from the outside world and teaches her english wrong, like he teaches her thatĀ āyesā andĀ ānoā have the opposite meaning than they actually do and thatĀ āupā meansĀ ādownā and vice versa, and then this guy meets her and starts to teach her what the words actually mean and she kinda sorta starts to get it and like, realize that itās fucked up
and then one day sheās not home and the house is on fire and her dadās inside and the firefighters are likeĀ āis there anyone insideā and she saysĀ ānoā and we donāt know whether she understands what sheās saying or not
wild
no I do not but please tell me more
What IS it with short stories that are just seven crunchy layers of fucked up?
Thereās another one from the same author about a salesman who goes from town to town selling his miracle glue. He gives demonstations showing that if you rejoin two pieces of cut rope with it, the rope can hold up a car! (And of course, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link).
But it turns out heās a conman, and while the glue does work, it dissolves after a few hours of use, which is why the salesman keeps moving from town to town. And we see a few scenes of people caught up in the scam, like a guy whoās canoe sinks because he plugged a hole using the glue, or an old lady crying because her fine china - which she thought she could finally repair for good - breaks apart again.
And then the salesman meets another inventor, who presents his portable flying machine. Itās a little box you attach to your wrist like a watch, and it really lets you fly! The inventor says he actually made two, and lets the salesman borrow one, and they go flying together. Itās quite fun, to the point of losing track of time, and the two seem to get along, conversing all the while.
The salesman loves the flying and the conversation, theyāre miles up and itās thrilling. But the inventor admits the two flying machines are miles apart in terms of quality, and he decided to give the better one to the salesman for their little flight.
Ā After all, itās made using the salesmanās miracle glue.
Whoa! I recognised these plots right away! These are both short stories by australian author, Paul Jennings - āNo is Yesā and āStrap Box Flyerā respectively I believe!
They were both published in his āUn-ā series of short story compilations with titles like āUnbelievableā, āUncannyā, āUnrealā etc.
I read those books over and over when I was growing up and the plots of early seasons of the iconic Aussie kids show āRound The Twistā are actually based on his short stories!
He wrote heaps of other really cool stories I definitely recommend checking out! Paul Jennings is fantastic! šš
