So let me tell you about the last year.
DISCLAIMER: this post is a bit rambly and discusses personal and medical issues. Iâm not asking for sympathy, but trying to keep track and be honest with myself and everybody else. Itâs been almost a year since I wrote anything except emails. I fear Iâm losing my touch, but Iâve had my reasons. Social media is a brilliant veil â with it you can show people exactly what you want them to see. IâŚ

The Walking Dead Recap: "Strangers" (Season 5, Episode 2)
The Walking Dead Recap: âStrangersâ (Season 5, Episode 2)
My copy of last weekâs season premiere was missing a crucial post-credits element: a masked man on the tracks follows an X carved into a tree just after Rick and crew pass; he takes off the mask to better see his surroundings, and itâs none other than Morgan. A blast form the past, looking considerably less nuts than last time we saw him. So far in season five, it appears everythingâs coming fullâŚ

The Walking Dead Recap: "No Sanctuary" (Season 5, Episode 1)
The Walking Deadhas never really been about the dead. Itâs about the living, and the myriad ways in which people adapt (or donât) to a new world order, one that thrives on chaos and death. Even the credits in season five reflect the new world; candles dribble wax and axes drip blood, buildings crumble under natureâs influence, crows light in trees waiting for corpses to rot. Thereâs no nostalgiaâŚ

In Transition
Back in July, I decided to use my newly acquired professional certification to start searching for jobs elsewhere. I applied for jobs throughout Virginia, North Carolina, California, and various other places. (When Iâm angry, I get shit done.) Within a few weeks of sending applications, universities throughout Virginia were asking to interview me. It was a bit of a slap in the face â to beâŚ

I have been redirecting my mental efforts toward what has become an actual, viable career path for me. That has proven far, far less fruitful than I hoped. I need to turn back to writing, and frankly I donât know how well that will go since Iâm no good at the SEO, clickbait-headlines, algorithmic nonsense.
I turn 30 years old on Wednesday. I will have been in Virginia for five years on Thursday.âŚ

Trigger warming: extreme violence against women, discussion of murder, suicide, online bullying
As a sexologist, Iâve been writing and educating about sexual double standards for years; the age-old damned if you do, damned if you donât predicament women face about their sexuality. If you have...

I wrote professionally for the online magazine California Literary Review for four years. My piece defending Hit Girl garnered something like 90,000 views. Not dead, just braindead
Iâm alive, and I know itâs been more than two weeks since I last wrote. A friend said recently that nothingâs worse than having a blog and not keeping up with it â and I wholly agree. But I simply havenât had the brainpower to write much in the last few weeks.

Dr. Nerdlove Nerds and Male Privilege Part 2
This is one of the most common deflections when the issue of how women are portrayed comes up. Itâs known as a false equivalence â the idea that two things presented together as equal when in fact they arenât. In this case, the idea that just because women have exaggerated physiques doesnât mean theyâre sexist because the men are just as exaggerated too. Of course, this doesnât work for many reasons. To start with, it assumes â falsely â that the things that women find sexy are the same things that guys find sexy; that is, the exaggerated secondary sex characteristics. But weâll get to that in a second.
The other issue is the reason for the exaggeration. Comics and games are fantasy true, but the fantasy aspect differs when it comes to male and female characters. Male characters are a power fantasy; the large muscles and massive torsos are visual signs that this character is an unstoppable powerhouse. Kratos doesnât look the way he does because Sony Computer Entertainment did focus-market studies and found that women reacted best to that design; he looks the way he does because he represents the powerful alpha-male that gamers want to be.
The women, on the other hand, are sexual fantasies. These are the rewards for the player â the characterâs love-interest, the motivation to complete the game. Theyâre designed as eye-candy; theyâre intended as something to be consumed, not something to escape into. Women like to fantasize about being desirable yes, but they also like to be powerful, and their definition of what they would consider to be sexy and powerful doesnât mean battle-bikinis and thongs of power.
But hey, Iâm a guy. Itâs easy for me to sit here and proclaim what women find sexy, but I could be talking out of my ass. So why not take it to the source? I put out a completely unscientific poll on Facebook and Twitter about characters that women find sexy â video games, comics, anime, whatever. And the results? Well, letâs compare.
Up top we have the exaggerated figures that are supposedly sexy.
And here are the characters my female readers find sexy:
Notice a trend here? These are not the massive beefcakes alpha-males that are supposedly as equally objectified as Kasumi, Ayane or Ivy. These men have longer torsos with much leaner builds; theyâre built like swimmers rather than weight-lifters. Theyâre not men who scream âunstoppable physical powerâ. Theyâre lithe and dextrous, not barrel-chested juggernauts with treestumps for limbs.
And the other critical factor: itâs not just their builds that make them sexy. Gambit, for example is attractive because of his personality and his situation; heâs tortured because he canât physically touch the woman he loves. Nightcrawler is the laughing swashbuckler, full of wit and flirty charm. Jareth is dark and mysterious and just a little dangerous and oozes sexuality.
Yes, the men are exaggerated as much as the women. But itâs the intent and the message that make all of the difference.
The part I find most baffling about the claims that men suffer from the same objectification and sexualization as women is I can never, for the life of me, think of a popular product that has:
Plot essential scenes taking place inside a male strip bar, a strip bar that is introduced with loving panning shots over the performers bodies.
Sincere marketing campaigns for non-romantic productions focusing entirely on the sexual characteristics and flirtatious manner of the male lead.
A scandal where it turns out the creators accidentally released imagery of a male lead nude, imagery that never needed to be created for the production in the first place.
A video game rumor that thereâs a key function to unlock ânaked modeâ so you can see the male protagonist running around naked
Part of the reason why some people seem to think that men are sexualized is, ironically, because male sexuality is so rarely put on display as enticement that it creates a mirage effect. Â People who assume it must be there start seeing it everywhere rather than realizing itâs just not there.
Good thing Bikini Armor Battle Damage is here to help out.

Musing on Mad Men, movies, & being a real adult

If Stuntmen from the old movies donât have your full respect then I just donât know what to say to you
l tried really hard not to reblog this
Yeah, it is indeed really hard not to reblog a fucking thing.
Dudes, really important note: this is not a stuntman, this is Buster Keaton, the star of all these films. He did all of his own stunts. All of them - well except one in the film âCollegeâ because he didnât have enough time to learn how to fucking pole vault for the scene. He was practically an Olympic-grade athlete and did stunts so dangerous that his cameramen were told to keep rolling the camera unless one of two things happened: Buster yelled âcut!â or if Buster died. That was it. And he nearly died on more than one occasion and got some great shots out of it. The last gif was an accident. He was supposed to make it to the other building, but when he fell and saw the take, he realized he could use it and add more gags to the films. Oh and that makeshift escalator heâs tumbling on? In the first filming of it, he broke his ankle and his doctor said he couldnât do more crazy stunts until it healed. So he made another short film which included a dance with vigorous hopping on his feet. He also almost drowned in one film and even broke his neck in another - and he didnât even know it until years later when a doctor saw the healed fracture on an x-ray.
Buster Keaton was a comedic genius, a badass, and basically the unbreakable man. His movies are some of the greatest comedies of the silent era. Everyone should watch him.

Mad Men Recap: âThe Monolithâ (Season 7, Episode 4)
Iâve been gathering a few people to watch Game of Thrones and Mad Men each week, and itâs interesting how watching with other people can change your perspective. When I was writing for California Literary Review, I think my editor enjoyed my pieces because I chronicled the reactions of the audience as lovingly as I wrote about the film. After last nightâs episode, my friend Chelsea said with aâŚ

The FCC sided with Comcast and decided to let ISPs censor the internet. The Internet needs to stop this from happening: http://cms.fightforthefuture.org/tellfcc/
Last Wednesday, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler announced a proposal for new rules that would allow for a â fast laneâ of Internet traffic for content providers who are willing (and able) to pay a fee. [1] The proposal reverses the FCCâs previous commitment to net neutrality and open internet and allows ISPâs like Comcast or Verizon to slow down and censor services that donât pay the toll.
We have to be totally honest, this situation is seriously grim. But there is still hope. The FCC already knows that the Internet community wants net neutrality, but they think they can put their spin on these new rules and sneak them through. If we can prove them wrong right now with a massive public outcry, we can literally save the Internet once again.
We need to stop the FCC now. Big business groups are already ramping up lobbying efforts with the FCC in swarms since Wednesdayâs announcement in support of censoring the open Internet and to ensure this dangerous proposal moves forward. [2]
This is a critical moment. In the last few weeks more than 65,000 people have taken action with us. Can you help us get to 80,000 by the end of the day today?

 - Fight For The Future
Hereâs some extra (also important) information:
The chairman of the FCC, Tom Wheeler, was previously a lobbyist for the cable and wireless industry. This revolving door our government has with large corporations and their lobbyists is what leads to these kind of policy disasters which crush the competition of big businesses and devastate our individual freedoms. Net Neutrality is important. Very VERY important. But itâs just going to keep coming under fire again and again unless we address the underlying problem and that is the corrupting influence of money in our politics. 28th Amendment, anyone?
Having said that SIGN THE PETITION. We gotta do what we can at the moment.
